Tall Gambrel barn chimney

Hi guys

I'm thinking about installing a waste oil furnace or wood furnace in my barn. My roof peak is quite high (like 35ft) since it is a gambrel style barn. I want to put it on the ground floor.

Curious about chimney setups.

Is the only way to buy a ton of chimney pipes and put it above the roof line like 35ft up? I saw online perhaps a powered flue vent. Is that something one of you guys have?

I have never seen "side vent" oil burner nor wood burner. Both would likley soot up the exterior wall. But I get not wanting 35' of flue, might even require more maintenace as flue gas cools and deposits materail on the walls of the flue. I like the concept of both (have heated with wood and installed an oil burner in a contract shop build) but not worth the extra effort for me.

Tjernlund make side wall oil power vent units. Call them. I am not sure they are approved for “used oil.” Yes you are looking a lot of Type L rated chimney. You need at least a type L which is the standard oil is tested to. The nomenclature can become a bit confusing because every one stocks the all fuel UL103 HT pipe which can be used for wood and oil. L cannot be use on wood. That is a very ticklish chimney install. You will likely need a couple roof braces. Don’t overlook them.

Thanks Jack. Am I correct in assuming that with a powered vent you don’t need to vent above the roof line? Can it just vent out horizontally?

Yes they vent out the side wall. From Tjernlund you would likely be looking at the SideShot. IMO they are the best of the side wall oil vent machines. Field Controls make one too. In looking at the pictures again, that is not a large space. I’ve been away from it for a while but I think most used oil units have large capacity. This sites resident expert on used oil equipment posted as “Shop Specialties”, although I’ve not seen him active for some time. Look him up and shoot him a pm.
I think that by the time you buy and oil tank, furnace and a lot of pipe you will have a substantial investment in it for a small space. I’m like a broken record here on this but a Rinnai EX22 or 38 would save you space and comes with its vent which sits behind the unit.

Yes it's not too big. 25x25 with 10' ceilings. I have access to a lot of free oil, and already have a converted waste oil furnace...it can be turned down quite a bit to around 0.5 GPH I believe. I'd like to have more power than not enough as I don't plan on running the heat all the time in this building, only when I want to work out there. I can't beat the price of free fuel. It can get mighty cold here where I am in Canada.

The Tjernlund look like pretty nice units.

Even at .5 it is likely twice as large as you need, but I get the free oil point. At .5 I would opt for the Sideshot II. It is much easier to service as it has a slide out tray and a much easier to clean fan. Install it so the slide out chassis can be removed. It needs to be clean in order to keep you happy so when you clean the furnace clean the SS. I have seen so many oil companies service systems and they will clean the burner/HX and never touch the power venter. It is a system.

On a barn that tall, running full chimney to proper height is probably the safest long-term move for draft and code compliance. A power vent could work, but I’d double-check manufacturer specs and local code before going that route. With waste oil especially, good draft and easy cleaning access would be priorities.
