If you had the resources or just a bunch of $ to burn. One of those library setups with the rolling ladder would be slick. Floor to ceiling with what ever you desire. Tools, fasteners, etc. Common used items on the bottom, lesser used stuff towards the top.
Lumber rack or metal stock rack, either vertical or horizontal.
I'm in a 12x20 w/ 12' ceilings single stall and cramped for space, so vertical is always my go to. Downside is that you can only go so high till it becomes an inconvenience. I have cabinets all the way at the ceiling around the perimeter for misc not commonly used stuff (paints, fluids, rope, caulking gun, plumbing snake, etc). It is a pain to get to them as I have to drag out a ladder, but no real other alternatives. Actually I just picked up another cabinet tonight. Saw it sitting by the curb on the way home.
I'd recommend cabinents over open shelves. Look for when people remodel you will find them super cheap (free). I have 10 IIRC all solid oak cabinents that someone just tossed after a remodel.

I'm rather vertically challenged myself, but if you are taller than the average person. Stacking tool boxes and other common storage goods may be an option for you.
