Taller skinnier LED bulbs

I just tried to replace an incandescent bulb in a fixture with LED.

Once again, the bulb would not seat deep enough in the socket to work. The LED has a little step that hits the plastic surrounding the socket before it's deep enough to make contact.

I have run into this several times when replacing incandescent bulbs with LEDs.

Are there LED Bulbs that ate tapered like incandescent bulbs?

Links would be appreciated. Last time I checked at Menards and Lowes, I struck out.

I have run into the same issue and ended up modifying the socket. Recently I think I saw some GE LED bulbs that claim not to have the problem. Have not purchased any yet.

If you see any more info on those bulbs and where to buy, please post up.

I hate to go modifying/replacing sockets if I can just buy differeny bulbs. That just adds more projects to the too many I already have.

I know what you mean. The ones I modified are in an older wall mounted decorative fixture that we really like otherwise I would have just replaced the fixture :) I will try to remember where I saw the GE's. I am thinking it was probably at WalMart. If I see them in my travels I will definitely make note of them.

The GE (a Savant company) bulbs you can get at Lowes look just like regular old incandescent light bulbs. Give them a try.

What sort of bulb is your socket expecting? The market is flooded with A19 size LED bulbs that don't have a step up in diameter past the threads (exactly conforming with the traditional A19 glass bulb shape), so I'm not sure what issue you have.

A regular incandescent is what they were made for.

Apparently I found one LED that fit. Since that one went bad I have found no others without the step in several trips shopping.

I had some squirrelly cube cfls that worked in those sockets.

I look about every time I go to town.

Do you have a link to some I can order online?

About the only time we go to town is for chemo and I don't feel much like shopping o. Those days.

On a search, I did not see any without the step after the threads.

Wife went shopping a couple days ago and struck out at the stores she went to. I was able to cut the end off the offending socket for this application. And use a stepped bulb. I'm not sure that will be possible for all the others. I have 4 or 5 presenting an issue.

I have had the same problem. I was able to lift the brass tab in the bottom of socket to make contact to the LED's.
Of course you need to assure the power is OFF before poking round in there.

It took me a bit of trial and error to find LED bulbs to replace my 3-way (50/100/150W incandescent equivalent) bulbs. Some older LED designs are taller and fatter than the (A21 size) incandescents.
I ended up with an oddball brand called 'Scheinendo' from Amazon that fits fine. I think it's a hair taller than the one it replaced.

For normal size (A19) 60 and 100W equivalents, I have ones from Feit that are identical in size or slightly smaller than the incandescents they replaced.

I don't think any of mine are dimmable. I think the dimmable ones tend to be oversized.

Agreed. That is what I have done as well on older garage door opener sockets. Simple cheap, quick and permanent fix.

Agreed. This sounds to me like the fixture was damaged by someone screwing in a bulb too tightly which pressed in the center conductor.

I have found that LED bulbs can be found in many shapes and sizes at Lighting Fixture Retailers. When you shop at the Big Box Orange or Blue store you are limiting yourself to the fastest movers, specialty retailers will have the odd stuff; but you will pay for the convenience of finding what you are looking for in a small quantity.
