My mother got quotes for roof replacement on her house.

Another of the companies included a :

1. Tamko shingle called Heritage
2 Certainteed Landmark Shingle( higher price)

Any thoughts on these shingles? I never heard of Tamko but I am not in the business. About $400 dollar difference. Three bedroom rambler , not sure of Size.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

About 15 years ago,I put down a lot of Tamko 30 yr Architecturals. One building was 320 squares. No issues so far.

They started in Joplin, Missouri in the 1940s, so they’ve been around quite awhile. They’re a reputable brand, but not as much of a recognized name as Certainteed, GAF, or Owens Corning.

Just did my Roof and went with Certainteed... got quotes with Certainteed, GAF, and ONE with Tamko.

Loving the Certainteed and would not look back !!

Got pictures of before and after if interested... I went with Atlantic Blue to compliment the blue trim !!

I researched roofing last fall before putting 45 square on my new shop. I was impressed with the Owens Corning Duration with the "Sure Nail Strip", they sell for about the same price as everything else around here and the pros I talked to said they liked the OC because they were more confident their help was putting the nails where they belonged and they seemed convinced that nail strip was the way to go. Less critical for blowing nails through the shingles too. Check out the video. http://www.owenscorning.com/roofing/browse-shingles/trudefinition-duration/

Certainteed is pretty good stuff, Tamko I think is pretty decent too. Roofing products distributor I worked for for many years used to sell them both. Pabco is also an excellent product if you can get that where you're at. It's very highly respected stuff around here, and on my house as well. It's a 25 year roof, almost 20 years old now and looking good still. I'm on the West coast.

Tamko Heritage AR on my house for 10 years and no issues and no algae staining. GAF and Certainteed the same age in my area are discolored.

The other question I’d ask is whether both products are from the same installer? Or two installers with different products?

Make sure that everyone is quoting the same work - strip off existing shingles, replace any sheathing and flashing that requires it, new underlayment, new ice shield, etc. I see too many roofers not want to bother with replacing sheathing or flashing and skimp on underlayment and ice shield.

Tamko Heritage is the bread and butter go-to shingle here in midwest (yes they are based in Joplin, MO).

Around here, Certainteed brand would be lesser brand and actually have had previous warranty problems (thin shingles, blow-off problems, etc).

GAF would be step up beyond both of the above 2 brands.

Owens Corning would be more of lateral comparable product to the Tamko.

I'd say skip the Certainteed, and jump right into the Tamko . . very good product.

This is my $0.02 but these shingle manufacturers produce these products to stay in business. None of them intentionally produce ****. There is too much liability in replacing roofing in the end product.

I had my new house roofed a couple of years ago with GAF architectural shingles. They were the least expensive.

What I recommend for you (because this is what I did) is spend your extra money that you saved and invest in a reputable installer. The way that shingles are installed has everything to do with how they look, perform, and last.

A good installer can make sure the underlayment and valleys are properly done and will be well worth the extra money.

The shingles are guaranteed to last a certain amount of time, but the installation is not.

I have Tamco architectural shingles on my home. They say Dallas, TX on them.
I've had to replace about two bundles in the last five years, all from the same section of my roof - none from anywhere on the rest of the home. The nails just pulled through leaving perfect little holes. The roofer who did the most recent patch job said it was probably the installer, but maybe just a bad batch of shingles. He said he had never had a problem with Tamco. I can see a scenario where the nail gun was set just a little too forcefully when they were doing that section. Can't really fault the shingle company since it was just in one section of the roof.
