Tank Nut Removal - Floor Jack

I am trying to remove the Cap/Tank Nut off the cylinder/reservoir (Power unit) on my Craftsman Model 727-12102 1 1/2 ton floor jack (believed to be the same as Blackjack # SJ-2).

Whats the trick? I have it secured in a big vise and used a 24" plus pipe wrench............No luck. I am assuming counter clockwise to unscrew.

I even tried a little heat from a propane torch and that didn't help.

Any suggestions?

I don't want to bust anything because its a great jack that needs a rebuild.

Thanks in advance,

Bob

The 'trick' is that they are torqued to about 650 ft/lbs!!

At least mine was. It took a 1" impact gun to get it loose, and a 1" drive 36" long torque wrench with a 4' cheater on it to get it back tight!

I say get the right socket, a big breaker bar, and a large pipe and jump on it a few times. Unless you have access to a large impact gun, I think a breaker bar and cheater bar would be the cheaper route.

I got it off. Thanks guys! I just needed to support the cylinder a little better in my vice and then "drum roll" it was off.

What size socket do you need for an import floor jack (2 1/4 ton) tank nut?

Will a 2-1/8" SAE socket round off an import tank nut? How tight is the fit on the socket to the nut?

I'm confused? Is the nut 2 1/8"? As stated earlier.. It's not a uniform size, across all models. What size is your tank nut?

I have two Blackhawk SJ2's. Most excellent jack but do need to be resealed once in a while. I have used a 4ft pipe wrench with a 3 ft cheater pipe to remove the nut. They're REALLY tight.

You already have both halves of the solution ! The pipe wrench and the handle from the jack. Lash the jack handle to the pipe wrench like this.

Use some good line and keep those wrapping as tight as possible ! You might try some stainless steel worm gear hose clamps if you have some big ones laying around.

Worked for me !
