I see tankers from time to time for free. Even seen one with the side desk addition.
They're usually not in this nice shape though.

If I didn't already have one, I'd get one, but one is enough for me.

I use one of these in my study. When I moved years ago I had several friends help me. After moving this desk for the second or third time my buddy informed me that he would never help me move it again. It's that heavy. And he had a strong back.

Yeah. Tanker desks are the Wilton bullets of the desk world. ;)
They're insanely heavy for their size, but the linoleum tops make a great writing surface.

When I was involved in the used office furniture business, we used to junk these 'tank' desks back in the 1980s and 90s. If we happened to have a little spare floor space, we might try to display a couple of nicer ones and sell them dirt cheap. Nobody wanted them. The delivery crew hated them. I remember when the rubberized top surfaces got too chewed up, they used to make 'caps' for them--shallow boxes made with HPL to glue over the old tops. The 'side deck addition' is called a secretary 'L' desk They usually had a pedestal with a spring-loaded lift platform to put one of those weigh-a-ton typewriters on it.

Did we know there was someone out there who would want them? Sure. But we never managed to come up with a way to find that one in 10,000 customer and then put them and the desk together. Even if we did, we'd be lucky to get even $20 for one. So they got junked.

This one is a local landmark outside of Alpine, Texas. People visit it and sign the notebook inside (or the desk itself). It gets replaced every so often [emoji6]

I see these desks all the time at university surplus for about $25-$40. No easy way to dissasemble, but i did pick up a very nice steelcase desk that could be dissasembled and reassembped by 1 person. However, these tanker desks ive seen are nearly impossible to dissasemble, if they even can, and weigh hundreds of pounds.

Perfect as a bomb shelter or if you live only on the first floor and plan to put the desk in the living room.

Thats what I use here at work. Solid and will last forever. The only downside is on occasion when you smash your knee on them, there is ZERO forgiveness. :tantrum2:

My parents house has one of these in the garage as a work bench. Right side has a swing door on it vs drawers; I was told there used to be a typewriter hinged in there that would swing up. Dad was US Army.

When I bought my house 25 years ago, there was one in the basement, and the sellers asked me if they could leave it, as it was so heavy. I said yeah, they can leave it. As I will do, when ever I sell the house.

Had one in my shop but only piled things on top- it really wasn't an efficient use of square footage, but they are cool. I scrapped mine 12-14 years ago.

The trick to taking them apart is to take the drawers out, turn them upside down and just start taking fasteners apart. I took one apart to get it down to manageable size to carry up to attic office and reassemble.
