Tap and die set recommendations?

Time to buy a tap and die set in metric and SAE. Have considered the Irwin sets and a set of ratcheting holders.

Any recommendations of brand or metals they should be made of? My use is primarily home automotive. I'm hoping I can get a good set for $2-300.

HSS at a minimum. Avoid the carbon steel types widely available at big box hardware stores.
