Tap and die set value

Stopped in an antique shop today and found this. Sweet case, everything looks clean and in order. Wonder what it's worth? Try are asking 60.

There's only 3 sizes of dies and not too many taps. You're going to have only a partial set that will be hard to find more pieces for. The other thing is that set only has 2 die holders whereas most of those type sets have the round die holders for each size, not just 2 to hold all the sizes. I'd pass as there are better deals around.

I think it's overpriced.

But if you decide to go for it & want find the missing pieces & if you don't care if they all say "Craftsman", it's an old Greenfield Pericles Screw Plate set...

I should have been specific. There are 5 sizes. 3/4, 5/8, 1/2, 3/8 and 1/4 all nc. They are all actually there, it's just hard to tell.

I have kind of a "free tap and die store," I bill my customers for all my threading needs, then drop the "shop supplies" off their bill. Usually it evens out or actually saves them money.

I was mainly interested in the tap handle, die stock, and case. I figured it was a ~30 dollar set, but was interested in if it was actually worth near what they were asking.

I'll let them sit on it a week or two, return, and see if they will take my offer. If not, I'll just hold out for something more interesting.

Lots of older pipe wrenches, mainly rigid with perfect teeth. I ony have a need for a 48 or 60 rigid, so I passed as well.

$15-20 tops. You can find much more complete sets, even US made, for $50-60 if you look around.

Problem with antique stores is that they are selling something for someone to put on a shelf to decorate a room, and price accordingly. I've been able to beat down a couple to half of what they're asking for usable tools (cash helps) but don't expect to get that kind of a price unless it has been sitting there for a while.

I got this set of 16 dies from 1/4" to 3/4" plus 6 or 8 taps for $40.00 and my buddy laughed at me for paying so much. I figure they've paid for themselves after 2 uses now. I made a spindle puller and tapped a few threads. I can't recall if there was any tap handles in there or not but I have too many already anyway.

I think if you wait you'll find a better deal. A lot of guys prefer the fixed sized ones and don't like these adjustable ones.

I love it! I'm holding out, I really want something with a nice wooden case, and room to hold all my nc and NF taps and dies. Maybe I can convince a carpenter at one of my customers to build me a case once I get the die and tap handles I really want
