I stopped by a local pawnshop today and found a 41 piece SAE tap and die set for sale. It was an older Hanson Made in USA set, ranging from #4 to 1/2". From what I could see, it was very lightly used, if at all. The posted price was $100, but the owner offered $75 as I walked away. Is this a fair price? I'm not looking to use this professionally, I just want to have a set on hand in case I need it. Thanks for the help!

I might consider it at $50, I would walk at $75 still. That set, still made in USA goes for $100 brandy new.

Taps and dies, being a wear item, you don't know how they were treated, etc. I guess if it looks like maybe one or two was used I would consider it at $75, but only if I needed it. You aren't saving much over new.

Thanks for the input, I thought that was a little high. I suppose if it's still there next week I'll try to haggle with him.

Update- I went back to the pawnshop a few days ago and the set was still there so I offered $50, the owner hummed and hawed a while and let it go for that price. Upon closer inspection, one of the dies has been used, other than that, I can't tell that anything else was used.

Taps I've found are one of those things that if you use it once it usually pays for itself. They come in handy when you really need them. And if you get into fabracating things taps and dies really come in handy.
