What the hell does "tap size range 8" mean?

I need a tap extension for a HeliCoil M12 x 1.5mm tap.

Good stuff...........have used a 1/4" Dr. extension (upside down) in a pinch, where it will fit. But would be nice to have a proper set as shown. Not something you'll need everyday, but when you need it, you need it!

Yeah I'm trying to get peter_x's car fixed; he stripped out a hole in the block for mounting the cylinder head onto. Apparently, the threads in the hole start BELOW the deck surface; so I'm trying to come up with a way for him to install a HeliCoil down in the hole. I'm hoping the hole is counterbored to allow room for the tap extension; otherwise we're gonna have a problem getting those threads repaired.

Never seen one listed that way. I'd have to look at my set of Walton tap extensions at work to see how they are exactly listed.
You do know that you can use a 12 point socket on the tap or an 8 point if you have them?

Yes I do, but I was thinking perhaps the tap extension is smaller around in diameter. Since I haven't found any extra long STI taps, that hole in the block had better be counterbored. I don't see how the factory could've tapped the hole below the surface if it wasn't.

Looks like its for a # 8 screw. Pretty pricey if so.

Take a 1/4" drive extension and and weld it to the end of the tap.

This doesn't always work: I have seen a couple of taps stuck down in weird places after someone did this because you need special rod for high carbon steel to low carbon steel.


Personally I would just get the extension or make one out of round stock and a couple of set screws.

Merk, there was a guy at my old job that had a 12x1.5 tap that was about 8 inches long or so. just for jobs like the one your trying to help with. However i couldnt tell you where he got it from, but they are out there. fwiw

It's called a pulley tap and in this situation would be ideal. Most industrial supply houses should have them. If they don't get a new supplier.

Yeah, a pulley tap would be ideal if it was an "STI pulley tap;" no such thing exists though as far as I can tell.

Drill an appropriate sized coupling nut to the correct inside diameter for the tap shank size and then drill the nut faces for set screws and tap. You can then use a socket to run the tap in. I do it all the time when access is tight.....as long as it's not so tight that the nut and socket cause a problem.

You have to be carefull not to torque on it too hard if you weld something up. If you can get the drive end of the ratchet in the hole, I'd just grind the end of hte tap to fit in it, but the stuff I have had to do this on the tap was too small for that.

Use a Lisle tap holder and an extension for your ratchet.

You might want to try a tap chuck, they're like a little drill chuck for taps that you put a 3/8" drive extension into the back side. I have a set from Irwin and they have been a life saver a couple of times now. They were like $25 from Farm&Fleet.


Matco sells a set as well.
