Tape management

I'm looking for any ideas on better management of all of the different tape that I have lying around the shop.

A quick glance shows:

Duck tape
Duct tape (the silver stuff used to seal air ducts)
Various electrical tape
Blue painters tape
Double sided tape
Teflon and plumbers tape
Packing tape
etc

Right now they are just stacked on a shelf but from time to time the stack falls over and all sort of cursing can be heard from the shop as I go hunting for tape under the workbench. You would not believe how far things can roll.

I keep each roll in a quart or gallon ziplock bag so the sticky sides of the roll don't attract dust and dirt. Squeeze the air out, then stack them in a shoebox.

I have mostly shelving in my garage/shop. Therefore, mine are organized in blue plastic storage bins.

I have a deep drawer in my toolbox ... wait for it ... with a label ... TAPE

Inside... zip lock bags with an assortment of tape.

I took a handy box and punched out one of the rear knockouts, mounted a box connector and a 18-24" piece of EMT, all my electrical tape sits nicely on my workbench.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies. I'll look at the long hooks. I don't have a peg board in the current shop but I have a drill and walls which is close to the same thing.

Quick & simple, used 2x4 and EMT to hold my too many rolls of various tapes. Then screwed it to the wall. It even kinda looks OK (but maybe not...)

I use the handles of my wood handscrew clamps to store tape (and hang my grinding and welding masks).

First sort by use

Various electrical tape - With electrical stuff
Blue painters tape - With painting stuff
Double sided tape - In general supplies
Teflon and plumbers tape - In plumbing supplies
Packing tape - On your shipping bench or in general supplies
etc

Then, if you have multiples of one type, hang them of a dowel. If multiple types, stack them side by side in a box for easy access (Wax paper between the rolls).

Kind of. Once you have dowels for tape, just about anything in a roll form will fit well there.

Still, I keep my teflon tape with the plumbing materials, and electrical tape with the electrical tools.

Double sided tapes (VHB and carpet), packing tape, duck and duct tape, masking tape, instant flashing tape, and UHMW adhesive strips hang from my clamps.

And of course electrical tape is on the loop of my electrical tote.

I store my tape rolls stacked horizontally, hanging on 18" sections of small chain, attached to the midpoint of a 6" long horizontal dowel at the bottom. To install or remove a roll, grab bottom roll, lift stack of rolls up, turn dowel vertical and pass it up through the number of rolls that need to be removed.

Yes, you may have to remove a few to get to the one that you want, but it is in otherwise unused space hanging from the edge of a shelf over my workbench.

Most of mine are in an old Snap On 3 drawer top chest.

tape is an item, that gets kinda tossed on a shelf
except 'lectric, and teflon, in drawers.
i have a 30w x12d x 10t shelf overflowing

I used to have a filing cabinet drawer full. Now I only keep tape I buy in bulk (6 or more rolls in a package) in that drawer. My work bench is built in front of a 5' wide opening in a wall that is closed off but recessed inwards 3'. I've made thin shelves that fit in that recess and stick out another 2" so they are 5" deep shelves and they hold most of my tape in the top one that is harder to reach.

I scrapped some equipment racks and kept the 5" channeling that made up the corner frames. I cut and folded the ends so I could mount them at each side to the wall and then the centre length goes in 3" to the end of the recess. I used the solid ones you see on the right side for the shelves.



These thin shelves hold all my small weird shop supplies in front of the bench. I still keep several rolls of electrical tape in the roller cabinet that has my electrical stuff in it and teflon tape with plumbing supplies and air fittings but this is the bulk of my tape stash now.
