Yes, another tape thread. But honestly, I've looked at several of the others with no info. Figured I would see what I needed on the "Quality tape measure" thread, but no mention of it.

So, I don't need to have 40' of standout, but what I would like is for the damn thing to stay hooked on what I'm pulling it on. Have had a variety of tapes. Not afraid to spend a few bucks, but how's one to know? Does anyone have one that is exceptional in this area?
Thanks!

I burn so many damn tapes, I'm also always leaving them all over the shop/job. Anytime I see Milwaukee's with the magnet on clearance I grab a bunch and keep em ready.

Curious too...

I have long said that if you were sliding over a cliff and your life depended on hooking a tape measure to save yourself, you're a dead man....

But if you are just reeling it in, it will hook on every solid object within 5 feet on its way in

There are magnetic hooks... they should have a good "grip" if you're measuring carbon steel.
Obviously this doesn't work on stainless steel, wood and and a variety of other materials.

Some have "wings" and oversized hooks these days, magnets are great for, well, magnetic objects.

Otherwise is skill, practice, and cursing.

If I ever go rock climbing I'm carrying an air hose and extension cord..... guarantee those will catch something

Maybe a dab of liquid tape on the inside of the end for some grippage. Of course anything you add will change the measurment.

If you are working with wood, many reel type tape measures have a fold down tab with two small points that you can seat into the wood with a hammer. It hasn't been folded down in this picture -

I have a 25' Lufkin Control Series tape that I usually pick out of the drawer vs others because of its oversized end and large numbers.

For detail work my go to is a Fastcap Lefty/Righty because I am left handed.

Thanks CSP, that looks interesting. I'll take a closer look next time I'm in the store.

Manufacturers SHOULD offer a "Rough Carpenter" 25' w very small projecting very sharp teeth., along w the standard loose rivets.

Figuring like 1/32 max projection, the sharp teeth would really help rough in carps and the small deviation would be acceptable, or just call out for a "shy cut" if getting fancy.

If for work needing more accuracy, that complicates things... but the above I think would be great on 25' and 30 fat blades for rough work.

I have a bunch of these little disks that are like thin bottle cap. There is a slot that slide over the end of the tape and it has little teeth on the edge. There about an 1.25" diameter. Ive double checked them and the way they fit is dead on for measuring.

Komelon makes some with a strong magnet.
Swanson does too along with special tangs (the hook on the end) for different applications.
