Tape Storage

I like to keep my garage organized, and I have a drawer dedicated to the many rolls of tape that I seem to accumulate. But it is ugly, and I can't store all the tapes I have there anyway.

I want to store rolls of tape in a way that keeps them out of the dusty environs of my shop, and in a manner that lets them be accessible. So no stacking rolls on rods that stick out of pegboard, etc.

I welcome the collective wisdom of the GJ!

I have a dedicated "Tape and Adhesives" toolbox.

I use this one:

It is a decent size toolbox, but it is already full. I keep rolls of tape on the bottom, and hot glue gun, velcro, tubes of glue, and anything else that glues or sticks in the top tray.

I do keep a few rolls of the most frequently used items hanging on my pegboard.

I have a bookshelf that will fit the plastic shoe boxes ($1 each at Walmart). Perfect for small parts storage.

I do the same thing! Works great and is very cheap. Steel shelving, free from a demo job I did a few years ago and I recall paying 77 cents a piece for the shoe box totes.

do you guys find that storing tape in your garage if it's not heated and cooled will make it warp and not be as effective? Should tape storage be in the house if that the case? Might change recommendations for storage depending on environment

I just store in a drawer, but I ALWAYS seal in a ziploc bag, especially painters tape that needs to stay "fresh" to work correctly. This keeps the dirt/moisture out and seems to work well.

I store mine in a metal cabinet on several short pegs so that I can't put more than one roll per peg. I would find myself always needing the inner roll and this keeps me from having to move the outer one.

I warp and become less effective in non-heated and cooled garages :dunno::lol:

Short story long...when I first moved to metro Detroit after college, I was renting a house with 2 other guys. I had a bedroom that was a "family room" converted from a garage (on a slab), with no closet. I made a crude wooden cabinet to use for hanging space.

After I bought the house I'm in now, I brought that cabinet with me for use in the garage. In turning the tall hanging space into shelves for service manuals, I used brackets that would hold a dowel rod, and hang my tape on that. You can pull off a little if you want, or lift the end up and remove the roll(s). With the cabinet door closed, the tape stays nice and clean.

Winner. I'll be using this concept whenever I build my garage. Find somewhere inside a cabinet or storage closet...maybe just above a work bench, and use a hollow aluminum rod and buy some brackets.
