Taping Question for Checkerboard

I have done lots of floors but never a checkerboard. How does one tape off so that you can do a checkerboard pattern? I can't seem to figure that out. Does it take multiple applications? Tough to explain in words, maybe a drawing????

I did a wall in my garage and it wasn't easy. My Wife even helped with the taping. We used a chalk line to mark the grid, then taped around it. You'll use a lot of tape and you'll need to trim the tape in the corners. I used an X-Acto knife. Take your time doing the taping, if it's not perfect it will stick out like a sore thumb.
