I need a Tapmatic tap system for a hand held driver. Anyone know where I can find one?

A Tapmatic tool is a self-reversing system...it allows the drill to be run in forward the entire time. It has a clutch in it that spins the tap in reverse when you pull against it.

Thanks!

The only way I was aware they were normally used was on a drill press or milling machine. Hand held is news to me. :headscrat

I have used handhelds, but the head did not reverse. The ones I used were mounted to a low speed, high torque air drill. The head allowed for a little axial mis-alignment and had a break-away clutch. They were very nice. I do not know who made them even though I used one for about 3 hours a day every day for many, many years.

I am not familiar with a handheld, reversable Tapmatic.

Why not just chuck the tap in a normal drill chuck (assuming it's a smaller tap)? I tap up to 1/4-20 this way. The larger taps I will use by hand if it's not a mill job.

hholmberg, you are correct; Tapmatics are usually used on a drill press.

Example:

I would like something similar to this, but in a hand held version like MXtras says he used to use. The tool will need to be air powered and it will only be for 8-32 and 10-24 threads.

Ok, I found what I was looking for. Atlas Copco makes some but I'm sure they'll be over $2500 per. Oh well, isn't my money...

Why not just buy a small Tapmatic head and a cheap drill press. I think the small Tapmatics are around $500 or you can get an off brand for around $150-200 that goes to 1/4"

Oh but it is your money. You're being paid a wage and that is your money. The more you are able to save an employer the more that is available for YOU.

MSC is typical of the many tooling vendors that carry tapping heads. Elroy took the liberty of reviewing some of the tapping heads avaialble and tenders this tool for your consideration:

If Elroy knew a few more of the specific conditions he many make a different recommendation. Please be aware that many a hole has been tapped with nothing more than a sprial point (gun style) tap and a variable speed, reversing drill motor.
