My Uncle in NC was a Machinist.

I was given this box of assorted tap and dies when he passed, or they would have been thrown away.

Just throught I would post. Some have their wax protection still.

bad way to get some nice tools. Real question is who got the rest of the equipment? I love to buy from retired machinists they have some of the coolest pieces.

An alternate reality in a parallel universe.
If they have wax on them they may be resharps. If the tap was only lightly worn, a resharp will leave it on size, if not look for a marking like -3 or -.003. For most applications they'll work, but for critical thread engagement specs they may not. They are still perfect at clearing or restoring a thread if they are resharps. Cool that the family thought of you for them.

Sorry about your uncle. It's really cool that you ended up with his box full of taps. You'll think about him every time you look at them or use them. I have some tools from both my grandfathers and I know I think about them every time I use them.

Neat stuff. Do they still have the smell of machine oil or cutting fluid? My dad's shop has the smell of gun oil. Sounds crazy but I love that smell.

Where in NC are you?

yeah, it's a crappy way to get cool tools.

when my uncle died, my mom had a guy move into his house and do some work and all the tools disappeared out of the basement. now THAT really sucked....
