Teach 'em young

I lurk and drool after the garages herw mostly, but I wanted to show off my boy. Heath is 4 years old and lives to work on stuff like daddy does. I do my best to not discourage his curiosity, but it gets difficult when he is dropping nuts in an intake, lol.

Maybe by the time he is 40 I will have a garage.

Never to early to start teaching if they want to learn.

He will probably greatly appreciate anything you teach him down the road. Having to teach yourself or learn on the fly is not ideal.

My Dad tells when I was very young he sat me on top of his Ford V-8 engine and had me knock the pistons out through the bottom of the block using a hammer handle so he could re-sleeve the cylinders.
So long ago I have no memory of it happening, but he does. Ah, the things we learn at our father's elbow. A little later when a few years older I graduated to replacing a water pump, which I still remember how to do.

NOW, would be great time to get him Honda 50 mini-bike needing work . . .
. . . . . overhaul the topend & have him knock piston out with hammer handle !!
Teach him how to hone cylinder and put on piston ring compressor.

I learned getting hands greasy helping dad overhaul Ford 9N tractor that he must have thought it was Steiger 4wd !! I can remember at least 2 engine overhauls and maybe my older brother helped with another !!

That old Ford tractor is still working mowing with bushhog & dad is 85 !!!

Get him started early. Keep him engaged. I was discouraged from things dirty and mechanical and had learn myself.

May son still gives me a bad time about how I would distract him when he was trying to "help dad"! I was hanging some drywall and he was about four and wanted to help. I had a piece of Styrofoam laying around and gave him a few nails and a small hammer and let him have at it. When he was done, I would pull them out and he could start over.

Would probably get locked up today for letting him play with a hammer and nails!

However, he is grown now and struggles with knowing what end of a screw driver to use. Never showed any interest in fixing anything as he got older. Asked me to show him how to change the oil in his honda. Handed him the filter wrench, showed him how to use it and where the filter was. Rolled under the car and back out in about 30 seconds "can't do it!" That's about as easy as a oil filter gets! Again, no interest!

He wanted to help when he only got in the way. But when he could help, he wasn't interested.

He's a fireman now and a paramedic. Damn good paramedic from what I hear, but don't hand him a screwdriver!

That video was awesome; seems like you guys have a great relationship. Keep it up and soon you will have a well trained helper.

So many kids these days are lacking a father to teach them independence and work ethic. Most of my neighbors use a checkbook instead of some basic tools and common sense. One of them recently paid $100 to have his garden mower picked up, oil changed, blades sharpened, and dropped off. I offered to sharpen the blades for him for free but he was still too lazy to take them off. His dad should have turned more wrenches with him.

No names no pics no videos. if you want to share them do it on a restricted account or facebook. if I trolled your social media and videos and the like i'm betting I could find geotags on pics or things you have said to get close to your location. I yelled at my mother any time she put up information like that. just too many wackos out there .

I don't worry about that. I live out in the country and we are all always armed and watch out for each other.



He loves working on stuff he takes everything apart and even gets lots of it back together.

Yes when it comes to my kids. and if you think i'm nuts you don't know how easy it is to track someone down when they post intimate details of their lives. just dumb imo. not needed. share it with family or a group that you create not the whole world.
