I use staples on lbs sheathing and plywood sheathing. I use screws on decking a and fencing for hold and aesthetics. Staples look crappy imo.

Depends on the project. If you are painting the fence after you put it up, the small slot from a staple fills in far better than a screw hole. Deck boards on a deck that are slightly countersunk with a screw does look best. The 3/4" pine that I ship lapped and hung on the bathroom walls of my pool house looks way better with the staple slot than a screw. I've had a lot of positive comments on the staple look.

LOL @ metric **** ton....it sounds so official, so proper, so correct. But yet...it's not.

A metric **** ton has 200 lbs more **** than a standard **** ton!

Well if you know a way to stop frost heave and rot...I'm all ears. Every fence I've ever seen or built up this way has inevitably failed due to frost/rot, never from losing a board or two. In fact, the only time I've ever had to replace boards on the fences is when they get hit with something (sports, ladders, etc).

Use Osage orange. Won't Rot for the rest of your life. Neighbor put some in the ground in 47 when he was 22. Great man passed on to his reward a few years ago at 85.

Use tapered post with the big end down and 4' deep.

Fences are often built with a siding nailer, which uses thinner coil nails. I have one, as well as a Hitachi framer and a couple finish and brad nailers. I also have a positive placement nailer specifically for nailing metal framing brackets. The tip of the nail sticks out so you place it in the hole of the bracket. Made a huge difference building my barn and house.
