Tearing down existing outbuilding.

I currently have a 30 wide by 25 long metal outbuilding, steel frame. I plan to upgrade to a 40 x 50 after I get my concrete work squared away. Question, are there companies that also tear down existing buildings Prior to installing the new building? Is the building worth anything to someone?
Do people ever donate things like this? Any other thoughts on what people have done in the past with tearing down their existing building would be appreciated.

1. The appropriate answer will apply to your location.
2. This will depend on your location.
3. Pyromaniacs love old buildings.
4. This post is worthless without pictures.

A building like that can be moved pretty easily. Just advertise it "free" "to be moved".

If you're not looking for money, just post a pic of it on Craigslist under free. You will most likely have several interested people willing to take it apart and take it. I've given away almost everything during my remodel including old carpet, rusted chain link fence, a metal arrow shed... people take anything labeled free. (I even had people come and clear my landscape with a free ad for them to dig up and take away the plants and cactus in the yard.)

Honestly, after ten years as a GJ member I’m amazed that you seem to think “a metal building is a metal building”, they are all the same.

In fact there are many types and the type you have will directly affect the process of getting rid of it. If it’s a “Carolina Carport” or other lightweight building that’s not in the ground or in concrete, then it’s something that a couple of guys can take down and move, Craigslist fodder, for sure.
If it’s a “poultry house” construction it may require torches and other special tools, smaller market of takers.
If it’s a red iron building it will require heavy equipment to take down and require a big deal of planning to utilize.
More desirable building, yes, but a much smaller target audience.
So yes, it matters.
But you still think they’re all the same.

I can just imagine your ad for selling a pickup ~3/4 ton for sale... picture a truck~

Good luck with it.

We had an approximately 15x25 shed/cabin type building that me and the mrs. took down. We rented a dumpster for $250 and I bought $100 Bosch sawzall. The rest was a lot hauling and carrying from the backyard to the driveway....uphill. Scrap metal prices being what they are..you probably might make a little dent in the dumpster rental. Therer are plenty of scrap metal hustlers out there too....meaning guys that may disassemble and haul it away.

Wow. Tough crowd here. Thx to those with the helpful , positive responses. Not an expert by any means on outbuildings or metal buildings or whatever the correct terminology is. Was hoping to find out how to help someone Eg by donating it or offering it for scrap etc.

Up here in New England you won’t find a majority of metal. Maybe why guys are not understanding if not popular in their areas.
I just took down a wood structure and thought of offering some of the wood to people that wanted to remove it but just trashed it all as I was worried someone could get hurt and sue. Just a thought. A business should have proof of insurance.

I think you could easily call in someone who does demolition.

They would most likely charge you. I think there is the potential requirement for a licensed electrician to show up and verify power is removed if there is any question (like if it had any wiring at all). But there would be a time period and it would be done and gone.

The craiglist scrappers would be free as they would be profiting somewhat after gas & hauling.

I would be a little concerned about people working on my property and possibly unsafely . Don't know if there are other structures or other things close by to be worried about. I would expect it to be hacked apart in minimum time.

One of the worst scenarios would be for some scrappers to show up and take the tin off for example and be gone forever. Then the job isn't complete and the possibility for anyone to want the building is zero other than another scrapper willing to do harder/higher-hanging work.

If you are going to demo the existing slab maybe have those people also quote (or recommend) on doing the building as well.

If permits are required in your area then it is scrap metal. I get called with this question often. Unless you have the original stamped plans there is no way to verify what the structure is for the next person to get a permit. If a permit is not required it will be difficult to convince someone to pay for a building that small and then they have to disassemble it and haul it away.

It would help to know what kind of metal building it is. A picture of the interior would be helpful. As mentioned you may be asking for trouble having people on your property taking apart a structure. If someone is injured you might be liable for their care.

One option would be to take it apart yourself and label everything, then sell the kit. The sale might cover the labor to take it apart. The other option would be to call someone that does demolition. Have a couple of scrap metal bins dropped and an excavator with a thumb will make short work of the structure. Don’t expect to make much money on the scrap but at least it will be gone in a day.

Appreciate all the insight and comments. I would be leery about having someone on my property regarding the liability. I don’t have any existing plans for the building. It was here when we purchased the house. I will likely disassemble it and dispose of it or see if I can get it demolished as mentioned. Thanks again for all the comments, much appreciated

Its not a tough crowd. You're looking for information and advice, which you came here for.

Those that you are soliciting that information from are telling you, they need more information or simply a picture, maybe two, in order to provide that advice.

Not all metal buildings are the same is their point. You have to give a little to get a little.

Whatever or however you dispose of it, I'd get a demo permit from your local gov. This will remove it from your property taxation and make room for your new bldg and not be taxed on both when you build the new one.
