Those look nice. Lots of money, but for something that looks good, maybe you'd pay it. Hard to compare the clear span available with steel to "cheap" lumber, but you could look at floor trusses and see how that compares. But sometimes building something yourself seems well worth it, but it just has a million details that bog you down.

If you used engineered lumber (LVL, wooden I joist, etc) you might be able to get away with clear span. Depends on what your loads will be and the distance. I am putting a 12'x25 1/2' mezzanine in my garage using traditional 2x12 joist and a LVL beam. I will have 1 post in the middle of the beam, but could have gone no post if I used a 14 1/2" LVL beam. The lost head room was not worth it (plus the cost increase for the beam as well) I was going to look into steel, but would have had to fork out a bunch of $$$ to get it sized properly, plus I would have had to pack out the beam to hand joists on.

Hi All,

I’ve been lurking and learning a lot from this forum…and can actually contribute to this topic ☺.

We have a RV bay with a 16’ ceiling. We don’t have a RV and I wanted to build a loft/mezzanine and ended up purchasing a kit through Tecrostar.

It’s basically an erector set for adults. Pick the size you need (there are quite a few models and they are adjustable) and assemble. The kit comes with everything, even flooring and stair treads. My son, wife and I assembled it in a couple of days, not working on it full time. I think the time from order to delivery was 5 weeks or so.

Our mezzanine is 17’ wide and 12’ deep. The clear height under the beam is about 8’2” and the area above the deck to the ceiling is about 7’3”

I'll post pictures tonight

Does the assembled mezzanine look and feel "sturdy". When walking around on it, does it feel solid or does it feel like it is swaying?

I stumbled upon a mezzanine company called Tecrostar that sells mezzanine kits that are adjustable. Does anybody have any experience with them? Here is an example of one:

Timely post. I'm looking at this as well right now. Not interested in wood, because of the look and I want the clear span. Sent them a quote request a day or two ago.

Jeff do you have any updates on your Tecrostar mezzanine. I’m contemplating the same project, and same dimensions.
Any updates or pictures would be appreciated.

Thanks

Very happy with ours. It took us (wife and I) longer than Jeff to assemble but have had it a year and it’s been great. Dimensions are 13’ wide x 16’ deep x 10’ high. I use rolling stairs to get up to it.

I am involved in a similar project
Could you upload some pictures?

The joists can hang flush with the bottom of the beam, so the beam top is above the finished floor. That way you don't lose any headroom
