Just got an email and decided to try this style. I have and like the Ideal style, but you gotta line up the wire with the proper size on the anvil. Giving this style a go, plus made in Germany.
Any experience with this style and especially with whoever makes it for Tekton?

$75 is crazy!

I have the Pittsburgh variant and love it but it’s 1/6th the price
Well to be fair I get the instructor/student discount. And no way in hell I'm stripping small wires in tight spaces with HF tools.....but let's NOT start (continue?) that **** show please.

That's not the same model. The pro has a different cutter and ruberized grips.

I have the one you linked to and use it for making up control cabinets where I can set tools on the ledge inside. The striper is a luxury and not something I would carry in the field every day.
x2....here's the apples to apples...

I like that they keep putting out German stuff with there name on it. Since knipex at least don’t really got a useful warranty from what I hear. German and Japanese companies dont subscribe to the American warranty model is what people say but I never tried to use it tbh

^^^^ For that money just by the Knipex. There are hundred of workable strippers of the same type. Capri makes one as do many, many others.

WHY would you need to warranty a wire stripper other than bad out of the box? If you wear it out in twenty years, buy a new one.

The discount is what, 15%? I dunno …

the hf automatic wire stripper is a rebrand of the KYP 737, a taiwanese OEM that rebrands it for Capri, Engineer, Amphenol, and other more “reputable brands”. So not really a HF tool, IMO

I was interested but not sure what the pro model gets me that the $36 one wouldn’t do. The biggest wire I work on is probably 10 or 12 gauge, it’s funny I went to add the regular number five to my Amazon list and it’s already there from the last time we had a thread on these.

Yeah, but it helps the sting....hahahaha! I also had rewards that have been sitting forever, so that also helped.

well let us know what you think! I love the inexpensive version I have and I’m sure the Tekton/Knipex will be even better. It’s a super convenient tool that really speeds up the workflow. Just grip it and strip it

If I'm paying $75 for the thing, I might as well have it Knipex branded.

When people see "Tekton" on your tools they automatically assume you're a cheap-***.
I wouldn’t give a **** If it said “Fisher Price” on the side, so long as it performs well. C’mon now….

When will people finally figure out: "if it works, it works." THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS. TOPTUL sells the same tool. Bought a box of 10 for $8.00@ and gave most of them away to my friends. Everybody loves them without one complaint. My best friend's wife is a school teacher and she bought five of them to use in her science class five years ago. She's still using them and asking me to get more which isn't going to happen as I'm out of the TOPTUL business. Who cares what brand name is on it, once again: IF IT WORKS IT WORKS!!!"

I must have 5 or 6 different wire strippers. I've had flea market strippers that looked like Weicon but were disappointed in their performance.
The $36 Weicon is well worth it. It looks Fisher Price but it is a professional tool. I seriously doubt that the 10 for $8 ones are the same tool.

Good less likely they’ll steal so I use HF Pittsburgh tool bags for that reason

They were not $8 for ten of them. They were $8 each, that's what the @ means.

Because of Olli and 4x I bought a half dozen of these for me and guys a couple months back. We’re in the middle of a controls change out and have thousands of wires to strip from 18ga to 12ga. It’s a mixed review from the guys, a couple like them, some don’t.

My experience has been mixed after a couple thousand terminations. Every once in a while they’ll lock up but it’s always the same scenario, going between small / larger gauge. A couple cycles with no wire clears whatever caused the issue. This can be a little aggravating sometimes.

But what I do like is I’ve yet to find a nicked strand and the length gauge takes all the guess work out of it for the less experienced guys.

@LXCam Cam, does that happen right from the start for you, or only after it has been through X(***) strips already? I can relate to the issue, the more cuts they have made, they start to “catch” when switching between wire sizes. For me the prime example is doing lots of 1.5 and 2.5 diameter stripping, and then come the two tiny wires that typically go into the 12V transformer for the door bell here. You can bet it will stick/ not be happy about it. But never when they are new/ fresh out the box. I tend to get a new pair then. (And use the Knipex with replaceable “sensor” & blades more nowadays.)

But yeah, setting the length is the crucial feature with all of these. I don’t know how vital it is with comms equipment, but with the spring/stab terminals on outlets and switches, for example, XXmm absolutely need to be XXmm to have proper & safe retention.

Kind regards,
Olli

That’s exactly what happens. I hadn’t thought much on the fact of considering these a disposable tool but I guess I should consider time savings (and exactness) to replacement.

Length of strip isn’t super critical most of the time, that’s more of a professionalism thing. BUT on the rare occasions when someone isn’t paying attention on a screw terminal and doesn’t strip enough off, then tightens down on the insulation…..that’s a total piss off.

One thing I forgot, you can actually get replacement blades & spring for the 5 Pro as well.

IMG_0651.png

But it only makes sense if you can get decent pricing on them. At almost 24,- + 4,- shipping and a new Pro 5 available for 29,- including shipping as shown further up, I don’t bother with replacement blades.

Kind regards,
Olli

Not to derail the thread but I’ve had these Klein auto adjusting strippers for years and they work great. $23

I hadn’t seen those and am going to get a set to try out. One of the PITA parts of this cutover is all the existing intercom wiring is field terminated to 66 blocks. So we’re using cross connect wire between the blocks and our I/O termination which are all screw terminals. I’m not personally doing it but it ***** for the guy that is having to pay attention to stripping all that itty bitty ****.

My main concern is Klein quality has really taken a dump and it seems with every new gimmicky they come out with, quality just gets worse n worse. Guess we’ll see.

Olli, I just inspected my blades and to my surprise they look in great shape.

I bought these well over 10 years ago. So I can't comment on the current quality. But they've held up great for all my automotive wiring projects which has been quite a bit since buying them.

This is the automatic stripper design I've used. Mine are Irwin branded and at least 15 years old. I've only used them as a DIYer, mostly to strip smaller gauge wires.

I've never been left wanting, they've always stripped well and never damaged wires. I have heard from others that different brands of this style do vary in their quality and effectiveness.

I'm curious how the two styles compare. Has anyone used a brand name version of each? Is there a real world performance difference?

The Weicon and most of it’s “siblings” will go places you’re never going to reach with a tool like the 11061. The 11061 weighs 357g vs. 141g for the Weicon No. 5 Pro - this doesn’t matter when stripping a couple of wires, but hundreds? You’re going to be very thankful for a tool that weighs less than half. With the Weicon you can adjust length at a glance in clearly marked increments, changing back and forth always results in exactly the same length. With the 11061 setting correct length is not as simple, not as quick and not as precise.

Question is, what does matter most to any given user. They are very different tools.

And lets not forget, this is only two tools. Depending on the job/ environment you’re in you might want something like this with fixed blades/dies for specific sizes: https://www.rennsteig.com/en/products/detail/7082483.html which will provide an even cleaner cut for specific sheathing/mantle materials.

Kind regards,
Olli

I looked at Toptul DICA1306 and it does indeed look like the Weicon. Toptul has a pretty good reputation and I've had good luck with Taiwan tools. Can you point me to a source where I can buy a few of them for $8-10 each? I'd like to give some to my buddies.

Nowhere that I know of. I carried them but I know of no domestic source that does today.
