Because for some reason on this site warranty is the only factor when buying tools. I have never seen so many so Hung up on warranty. I really never even think about it when buying tools. It sounds like some here break tools at an alarming rate. Like the government should get involved and recalls issued.

Here's my two cents on warranty...it's just nice to have. I've broken a few tools in my day, but not many. However, if I plunk down some money for a tool, I only want to buy it once. That's my investment in the tool and I'd rather not invest in it again.

I rather buy from Tekton considering he's a member here who actually cares about the board/members here.

HF don't give 2 poops about this board.

A walk in warranty far surpasses a mail in warranty. To those saying there is not a Harbor freight close by For a warranty problem, you could mail it in. The problem with tekton is mailing, time, and postage is probably going to exceed the initial cost of the ratchet.

The guy who processes any returns at Tekton just said you don;t have to mail anything to them and you will have a replacement in 2-3 days.

I will support a company that pays a fair wage to their employees and helps out my own community if I have a choice over going an hour away to Harbor Freight.

How in the F--- is this still going? If you want to debate HF warranty start your own thread. Tekton ratchet review does not = HF group jerk and warranty policy debate.

Thank-you. So many here are fat too concerned with a tools warranty. I can't remember the last time I had to warranty a tool.

Unless...

The store is an hour out of your way and/or requires a receipt for exchange. In reality, I'm not saving 500 tool receipts. I'm also not spending 20 minutes sorting through them, jumping in the truck and driving 2 hours, and burning $25 worth of gas, to warranty a $15 ratchet.

If you only own 1 ratchet in each drive and your $15 composite busting causes your project to stop pending warranty exchange, turn in your man card and get your *** out of here and over to the a nice sewing forum or somewhere.

If you live 10 minutes from HF, good for you, but it's cheaper, faster, and much more convienant to let Dave mail it to me.

The emphasis on warranty on this board never ceases to amaze me.

This thread has gotten a bit out of hand over some warranty BS. If you live next door to a HF, buy their ratchet, if not, it may be worthwhile to buy the Tekton. Thanks for the review, great as always!

x 2

To each his own.

Also at HF no receipt needed if it says Pittsburgh on the tool. Either one is not better than the other, it's the same tool just different label. Everyone will have their reasons for buying that one!

Be happy :)

On something like a $10-15 ratchet, I'm not really too concerned about warranty, but it is nice to know that they will replace it without too much hassle or cost. If I had one of these ratchets and it broke, I would most likely set it aside to deal with the warranty on a rainy day or something, in the meantime, I have a few dozen other ratchets to see me through until I get a replacement.

Thanks for the review. I think I will order a set of these now that I know that these are mostly made of steel, and not all plastic.

So its cheaper to do all of that fancy over molding than to just chrome and polish it. Not surprising because the EPA regulates the hell out of platers and humans have to do the polishing.

Walk-in warranties will soon not be an option as there will be no brick & mortar stores... Was in Best Buy yesterday. A sales person was "helping" three people who were looking at camcorders. They would turn their back to him and check on-line pricing on their fones. They all walked out without spending a dime. How long does one think this will go on before it can no longer?

Um, why do you think everything is made in China? :eyecrazy: EPA can't regulate what they don't see.

Question woodstockva: does the composite coating provide electrical protection? If you hit a live circuit, is it thick enough/insulative to prevent arcing?

I agree with this. And just think about how many toolboxes they have sold directly because of this site!!!:lol_hitti. I discovered this place when I was looking for reviews of the 44" box a few years back... Been an expensive couple of years looking back:beer:

Thanks for the review by the way, I am much more likely to get a set of these knowing how much steel is under that composite. To be honest, I always thought they were all plastic.

You don't really need to worry about the warranty on these ratchets unless you're doing something stupid torque wise. Has anyone ever broken one with normal use? Maybe the 1/4...

Talk to the OP with his ridiculous statement that Tekton has the bestest warranty in the whole wide world...PERIOD.

OP's thread, OP's argument. If you don't like it, go make YOUR own thread.

In any case, more people should be talking about how Tekton is screwing everyone in the rear by charging twice as much. People jump all over Sears for charging double HF's prices for a HF-quality tool, but everyone loooooooves Tekon for just making the grey color into red ad doing the same thing.

I've never seen one break and Ive put a fair amount of torque on my 1/4 and 3/8, but it still makes no sense to go out of my way to pay more for the shittier warranty.

Where is the cost about the same?

At HF, the composite ratchets are OFTEN on sale (the 1/2" for $9.99, the 3/8" for $8.99, and the 1/4" for $7.99) Sooo… The price with a 25% off coupon is 1/2" for 7.49, 3/8" for $6.74, and the 1/4" for $5.99.

I rarely ever buy anything at HF without using a 25% off coupon on my phone. I have never had them not work, except for during the parking lot tent sale on a certain color tagged sale price (green maybe?). ...
My HF won't allow discount coupons to be applied to items already on sale.

to the op:

I think there's been some kind of miscommunication there. HF's coupon policy definitely allows coupons to be used on sale items. If some cashier is telling you this, talk to the manager or corporate customer service.

Maybe you're thinking of clearance items. Can't use coupons on those.

Mine allows coupons on regular sale items, as long as they are not coupon sale items or clearance, meaning you can't stack coupons. If the item is marked down in the sales paper with a coupon, you're out of luck using a 20-25% off coupon on top of it.

I rarely ever use coupons in my daily life, but HF and oil rebates are my exception. To me it seems that sales+25% off coupons is the only way I can justify HF. Maybe I am a weirdo. It seems to be almost a personal responsibility to get over on HF and big oil. I want the best possible deal on those two products.

I have no problem with MIT/Tekton. They are a nice Michigan company. I am appreciative of Dave's presence on the forum, too. He personally PM'd me about the Made in USA Tekton sale on Amazon, which was super nice. I had been wanting the 10" slip joints, too. They are great pliers, made by a terrific American company (Wilde). Anyways… I was not implying either company is better. I just wanted to convey that at HF, the same ratchets are basically half off if you play the sale/coupon game. Whether this is actually worth it because of personal circumstances (distance to store, vehicle mileage, allergy to HF store smell…) may vary.

I am just as bad about oil and oil filters. I like to only buy Corvette rated full synthetics, and pay almost NO money for them. It is a fun game. I have not bought any oil in ages, so as to use up my collection. So, I need to start looking for rebates again. If the companies design these weird sale/coupon/rebate price structures, why not play the game?

That is not how it works at any of the HF stores in the metro Detroit area. I think that the employees at your store do not understand HF's policies on coupons. Maybe you could write an e-mail to HF in Camarillo California to see if they can remedy the situation. I will not buy anything from them unless it is on sale and I have a 25% off coupon or item coupons.

I think I'm going to buy the 1/4" & 3/8" Tekton's simply because I like the color better. I'm going to move my HF versions to the house box. Any reason to go buy a new tool/toy!! :D

To be fair...if you don't have a harbor freight in the area you pay like 7 bucks in shipping and your warranty becomes mail in (I would assume). So...tekton might be a reasonable option for these folks.
