I just got an email from Tekton with their new ratcheting wrench offerings. Look like nice, Taiwan produced, wrenches for the money. I might be in for a the double ended long patterns; not reversible, but otherwise look like decent deal.

I own a few of the 6 point ratcheting wrenches, they are just “okay.” I’m not thrilled with the flex head not having distinct detents, so they don’t stay true and tend to flop around (ever so slightly) which is kinda annoying. Second thing I’m not thrilled with, it the bulkiness of the head. I was wenching on a lawn mower engine recently I reached for my Tekton, just then learned the head thickness was to large to slip into the tight space I was working on. So I reached for my old 1990’s craftsman wrench and that worked great. It wasn’t till I held them side by side when I realized that the Craftsman was a hair thinner but above the top jaw it had sort of a slopping head to allow it to fit into tighter spaces that the Tekton did not. I’m probably doing a poor job painting that picture for you.

I really like Tekton, but I wasn’t thrilled with these to be honest. Probably the first tool from them that I can say that about.

I wonder how they compare with universal spline when using them on square drives?

The double hex angle doesn't look optimum and the contact is right on the corner. In real life it might look (and work) better.

Access often restricts the use of an open ended spanner. I asked because they are advertised as being suitable for square fasteners but they don't really look it.

Jack

Why do you think they won't work on square fasteners? Plenty of engagement in the pic you uploaded :dunno:

I was wondering how well they would work.

The angle of the tool point is 120 degrees, the angle of the fastener is 90 degrees. That means there is a single point of contact per point and it is right on the corner of the fastener.

Universal splines are shaped so that it is not a point contact and it is not on the corner of the fastener.

I asked because I am curious.

I think we discovered in another thread that these are made by the same place that makes the Milwaukee stuff. There seems to be some caveats with the "head thickness" in the smaller sizes.

I wasn't a big fan of the 6-point versions. I'm kinda itching to try these new ones out.

They don't mention on their web page how many teeth in the ratchet mechanism so I assume it's probably 72. Also these are now more expensive than Gearwrench. Are they worth it?

I noticed that also. I've always found Gearwrench ratcheting wrenches to be of lower quality. Tekton also seems to have a great warranty based on forum feedback.

And yet it is a product made by a manufacturer that normally knows what it is doing. Perhaps there is something I am missing.

Jack

No, you are correct; the geometry of a 12 point is wrong for a square head; we've discussed this a lot. Yes, it can sometime work, but there is a reason why 4/8 point sockets are made. I was also disappointed to see this picture as it implies that 12 point works well on a square, and it generally is not a good choice.

Who cares about a dang square head with no access to it. I've never seen that scenario, and I'm sure you haven't either. That discussion has turned this thread into a bit of a waste. Last time I checked a 1940 Massey Ferguson had plenty if clearance.l if not get a spline wrench.

This nonsense of 1 wrench to fit every fastener, but none well, is exactly that. Nonsense.
