I am in need of some SAE shallow impacts. I am torn between these 2.

Tekton http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000JLDLU6/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Sunex http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002MWBOJK/?tag=atomicindus08-20

I have Sunex deep SAE impacts and the quality is superb and I wouldn't hesitate to buy them except the Tekton is cheaper. about $35 cheaper. I am still in college so price is a factor. I will be using these professionally on heavy equipment. Having the 1 1/2" and 1 3/8" scokets from the Sunex set would be nice but I can always acqauire them later.

What are your guy's opinion?

I haven't heard anything bad about the tekton sockets. As far as the Sunex sockets go, I've got the full 3/8" impact set (SAE and Metric in shallow and deep) from Sunex. I use them daily working on anything that comes in the shop (think F650s to Heavy Haul Peterbilts). I have zero issues with them and I beat on them with no mercy. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase more Sunex Impact Sockets.

Also, I found mine on amazon for $62.10 shipped to my doorstep. They are currently listed on Amazon for $78.03. So, If I were you I might watch for a sale. I'm assuming that you won't really need them until you're out of school so you have a bit of time.

Darn. Father's day is June 21st. I bet you'd be able to find a sale on a decent set of impact sockets around that time if you could wait a month but 1/2" drive impact set is something that you don't really want to wait on...

I personally have the HF Pro impact socket 1/2" drive sets in my drawers. The 15/16" deep socket is one that I use all the time (probably my most used socket of all). It goes on my MG725 and I've had that socket in the field for probably 6 months now with zero issues. One day it might explode but that day hasn't shown up yet :lol_hitti

I have a number of impact socket sets from Tekton. very happy with the quality. been doing a fair amount of suspension work lately and using them with my earthquake impact they have held up great with zero noticeable inside wear. like the fact that the sets do not skip sizes. the company has great customer service plus one of there reps is a member here on GJ. I would recommend them.

Tekton is CR-V and Sunex is Cr-Mo...Cr-Mo is preferred. I would go with the Pittsburgh Pros from Harbor Frieght, they are Cr-Mo and are inexpensive if price is a concern...especially with a 20% coupon.

Its not a huge concern, i was just trying to save a buck but after hearing that they are CR-V is enough to make me want the sunex.

I've had a Sunex set for years with no issues to report. I've heard some stories of them shattering as opposed to splitting when breaking but that was probably a sales pitch.

My vote is for Sunex as well.

I originally bought my first Sunex 1/2 set for home use. After abusing them for over a year on rusty suspension and farm equipment without any issues I started using them at work as well. Been using them daily for over 3 years and they have yet to fail me.

I do however occasionally lose a socket but they are available individually on Amazon which is nice.

1/4 price of a Mac or Snap-On set with all the quality.

A coworker told me this same story when I first brought my set into the shop. He said he heard it from the Snap-On dealer... So I don't know how much faith I can put into that.

That's who told me too lol. I talked to a lot of other mechanics before I made the decision to buy them. I needed some 3/8 drive and they've served me well.

Ordered the Sunex set. After adding in the cost of the set that NC_Shaun posted it will be the exact same price as the Sunex. I went with the Sunex because I know they are quality

this is actually a good deal if you're looking for shallows the 13 pc pro sets have fewer skipped sizes and with the 20% off coupon it's $20

I know this is wayyy late, but for future reference (like I was actually using this tread for) - OP went with Sunex because they're ChroMo and someone stated Tekton is not, but it says on website Tekton's are also ChroMo.
FWIW - I personally own 2 sets of Sunex 1/2" impact and 1 set of Sunex 3/8" impact, as well as the same 1/2" sets but Snap On Flank Drive and the Sunex are identical looking and work just as good. Here is a picture with Snap On on top and Sunex on bottom.

Furthermore, a tool dealer I go through stopped selling SK's impact sockets and replaced with Sunex simply because of the quality and low price. I am looking to buy a large set of sae impact sockets and Tekton's set 4886 caught my eye. Research led to this thread. Anyone have any positive feedback on Tekton's impact sockets?

I'm glad you went with the Sunex.

In our heavy equipment shop Sunex or Grey Pnuematic are the preferred impact socket brands except for the couple of older guys that have Snap On from back when they started their careers. These two brands hold up and are extremely affordable.

I like the Sunex sockets. Sunex also makes a wide variety of impact sockets so if you like sticking with one brand, they are the one to go with. I like the stubby hex sockets and want to pick up a master ⅜ set when they go on sale again.

tekton has some sets which are cr-mo but most are cr-v

i have yet to have any issue with my cr-v deeps from tekton... other than the always nagging concern over them only having etched markings

I've got chrome vanadium impacts. They've held up ok. I've got chromemoly as well. They hold up too. At this stage, if I had to opt for an alloy, it would be Cr-Mo. When I nabbed the HF Cr-V stuff, I wasn't in a position to pick and choose. Both Sunex and Tekton get good reviews.

If cost were a major factor, I'd grab the next 20% off coupon, and grab the Pitts Pro Cr-Mo impacts from Harbor Freight. You don't get bragging rights, but they work. All my Cr-V impacts are HF, and I haven't broken one. I've lost a couple, but not broken any.

FWIW you can get HF discounts any day of the week. Actually, anywhere for that matter. Anytime I need to buy something from lets say HF (very rare), Auto Zone, Advance Auto, or anywhere else, I buy online and pick up in store. The only difference is at checkout there is usually an area for "promo codes" or "discount codes." I do a google search for "advance auto coupon code" and up pops different sites. It takes a few tries sometimes, but well worth it. Just a few weeks ago I used a 40% off coupon on a $114 dollar distributor and got it for $70 +/- or something like that. Paid online and went to store to pick it up 10 minutes later. Used same one on AC Delco spark plug wires. I've also used codes for Gearwrench ratchet wrenches at Advance, motor oil, etc. Yesterday I used a 15% one on a $20 sensor. Saved $3 lol. But why not? Most the parts are junk anyways. I also frequently use coupon codes for Motel 6 and Wolverine. Cripe Distributing also has a few I've used.

Back to the subject, anyone use 3/4" drive Pittsburgh impacts with a good 3/4" impact wrench? What was the outcome? I have the deep jumbo metric set, but to date only use with ratchet. Always been nervous to use with impact wrench.

I have the metric set and have used them with an impact, but only with my 1/2in Earthquake and Dewalt DCF899 because I dont own a 3/4in impact. That said they handled it like they werent even being used. I dont think I would worry about using them with a 3/4in.

Well, a 1/2" Earthquake probably makes 500 ft lb of torque, not 700, and the Dewalt probably makes 700 average. Maybe more when the battery is tip top charged 1000%. Some 3/4" impacts are rated at 1200-1400+ ft lbs. And when you think about it, how many times have you flipped a good Snap On or Matco impact socket over and saw the damage from a strong gun? So a real cheap socket on a real strong impact, could be problems...

I'd bet only 1 in 10,000 might fail. And they were probably misused and abused.
