Tell me about this impact wrench...

Picked up a relatively interesting impact the other day, a Chicago Pneumatic CP796 with 6" anvil. I have no idea why I need a 1" impact, but the price was dirt cheap so I couldn't say no.

Its definitely a beast of an impact, but I haven't had a chance to actually try it yet....have to find some 1/2" quick-connects first. What's the minimum sized air hose and fitting I should use? Will 1/2" hose be enough to keep up with it?

Also, as you can see, it has definitely seen some use. Anyone ever rebuilt one? I see "tune up" kits for around $50-75, is there much that can go wrong with them? Any comments on Chicago Pneumatic impacts? How do they compare with others?

I have one just like it for ripping truck wheels. Definately 1/2" hose and I run mine at 175psi.

Most every truck shop has one of those. Good guns, 1/2 or 3/4 hose and 150 psi or more.

Assuming that is actually a CP797, they are very well regarded.

It is, at least that's what the decal reads... ;) I need to get it cleaned up, and take a few more pics. I picked it up with a few larger Cornwell sockets, all over 2"...only problem is, only one was actually 1" drive, the others are all 3/4" drive. Looks like I will be investing in a 1" to 3/4" adapter!

Interestingly enough, I looked on the CP site and its rated for 1400 ft-lbs. I thought it would be more, curious if its underrated (or that's just the rating at 90 psi). Even Harbor Freight rates their 1" clone at over 2k ft-lbs, but I am sure its a bit overrated. Either way, I have some 1/2" air hose, just have to get the correct coupler. I may end up adding a branch directly off my 80gal air tank, that way I can be sure that its getting all the air it needs.

It's a very good gun. The bigger the hose the better. For a rebuild kit make sure you put new vanes in, and make sure the air motor bore is smooth. It should last a long time. Lube it with ATF and penetrating oil mixed.

Hold on tight it has a lot of power, Ruger is right I have yet to work at a tuck shop without one is of these.
