So it cools about 2.5 degrees below set temp and turns on when it's 2.5 degrees above the set temp. Is this what most thermostats do? The stat doesn't show you this though. It just stays at 75 or whatever the temperature is that you set it too.

Typical deadband for temp switches of that type.

If it's too tight, your **** is turning on and off way too much

Are you measuring the temperature swing with a thermometer next to the thermostat or in a different part of the room? More importantly, does the temperature swing feel excessive to you when working in there? I have a temperature sensor located next to my thermostat and the temperature swing it measures is significantly less than what you are seeing. My thermostat is an Emerson Sensi. In the data shown, the thermostat was set at 70 deg.4FF37CDC-61BC-4EF3-BCC7-BB0AEC33767F.jpeg

I guess it depends on what thermostat you have. My Radio Thermostat/Filtrete unit allows me to select the range. When we are home I go with 1.5 degrees, when we are away we go with 3.

Does your thermostat have a programmable Differential or Dead Band setting? Some thermos give you the option of setting the Dif/DB anywhere from +/- 0.5 degrees to 3 degrees in increments of 0.5 or 1 degree. A a diff setting of 2 will turn the system on when the actual temp drops 2 degrees lower than the temp Setting and off when the actual temp reaches 2 degrees above the temp. Setting. Some thermo brands and models do not allow you to program the Diff/DB setting (which are often 'factory set' at +/- 0.5 degrees).

I installed a Robertshaw thermo because it allows you to program the Differential anywhere from 0.5 to 3 degrees in increments of 1. The thero it replaced was factory set to a Diff/DB of +/- 0.5 degrees which resulted in the system turning on and off as many as 6 or 7 times per hour (as ddawg16 mentions above).

It has an offset. It seems the thermostat is kind of in a dead area so it was cooling way more than what showed on the thermostat. I don't know if offset is the same as differential though. We set the offset at -3 degrees iirc which was the max. I mean i'm fine with how it runs.

Like ddawg says it's just going to cycle on more often if I make it tighter as he describes.

I've set the Diff/DB/Dead Area on my thero at 2 degrees. This works out much better than the typical 0.5 deg factory non programmable Diff/DB/DA setting. Most lower end residential thermos do not offer the option to program the Diff. Meanwhile, various thermo manufacturers call what we are taking about by different names; Differential, Dead Band, Offset, and "Dead Area" (which I've never heard of until now). The Robershaw thermo labels this as 'Differential'.

Some thermos with programmable Diff settings display the temp that you have it set to. Others display the actual temp. Both types will sometimes allow you to 'toggle' between Set Temp/Actual Temp or Actual Temp/Set Temp when you press a certain button.
