Temperamental Kitchen Faucet

My kitchen faucet seems to have a mind of it's own. At times it is fine and at other times difficult to turn on the water. Turning on the water requires more of a pull type action and at times very easy, and at other times not so much. The turn action to change from hot to cold is fine. It does not seem to matter if hot or cold water is running. Faucet is about 18 years old, and one of two in the kitchen. The other, which is used much less, is fine. Faucet is ROHL.

Replace the cartridge

Depending on the cost of a cartridge, and knowing it's age, a new faucet might not be a bad idea.

I'm in the replace cartridge camp . reading between the lines , you are happy with the faucet in other aspects .

Update to this seemingly simple project. Rohl sent a new cartridge at no cost to me. The faucet has a screw on ring around the outside area where the cartridge fits. It will not unscrew. I tried my self with a strap wrench, and bare hands, no go. I called a plumber, and no go for him either. There is no hidden set screw or the like. It has an easily marred bronze finish. There are signs of a bit of corrosion around the ring and I suspect that is the issue, and the plumber did advise using some penetrating oil for a day or so. Is there an appropriate penetrating oil preferred by plumbers? I have PB Blaster that I use on automotive stuff but it really smells bad in a kitchen environment. Any suggestions?

Might try Kroil, it is a bit pricey, but the stench of PB Blaster is one of my gripes.
