Well, if you do it like I've always done it, you number the breaker box, then number the breakers. Then you label the switch and receptacle covers with the number of the box, a dash, then the number of the breaker. So if the receptacle is driven by breaker 17 in box 23, your sticker would say 23-17.

Thanks Kay,
What labeling system are people using? I wanted something that isn't affected by dirty hands.
I just did mine in excel and made it detailed enough that I really don't need to worry about checking the receptacle/switch for a breaker number.

If it gets dirty or damaged, I can print a fresh copy. You could laminate it, as well

There's usually a chart on the front of the box I write mine on, as far as anything on the wire I am most familiar with writing it in sharpie on the romex jacket, right at the point where it starts getting stripped, since it is usually white or yellow jacket. The only thing it doesn't work on is drier, oven, or HVAC but those are usually easy to sort out.

I have a spread sheet version of a panel schedule but I believe the panel has to be permanently labeled. The removable panel schedule is just helpful

We label with a brady bmp21 plus printer and 3/8" vinyl labels in industrial settings and they hold up pretty well.

In my own home, I wrote the breaker number in sharpie on the inside of every cover - so if I really need to know the breaker I just take the cover off.

I ended up getting Avery labels for my inkjet printer.
Thank you all

commercial panels often have removable panel schedules that are stored in a plastic pocket on the inside of the door
