Hi Everyone

Been lurkin around here for a while ,I found it through the H.A.M.B. where I have been feeding my on-line car addiction for quite a while now.
Heres my soon to be current situation: after being "downsized" over a year ago the wife and I decided to make a move about 2500 miles away to the other side of the country to Alberta from here in Ontario, took a year and a half to purge the car parts project cars finish the house reno and get the house sold.We are gonna be renting a very rural ol farm house on 200 acres to start with, there may be an opp to buy it in the near future ,there is no shop there now,I need to do something temp to be able to work on at least one of the projects. The landlady doesnt care what I do (family friend) and as I said we may be gettin the chance to buy the place next year so I dont want to do anything that cant be "undone " till we have a legal deal to buy the place.Anyone have some ideas or thoughts on a relatively inexpensive /easy to build temp shelter? My father-in law has a large trailer of scrounged wood for me already as well the school bus I am using as my moving van could be incorporated as part of the work space? I will need to come up with some kind of heating plan as well cause its damn cold here in The Great White North in the winter months...any ideas thoughts or suggestions out here,or pictures even? I have been considering a new larger temp garage set-up but they are about 1,600 bucks and that could buy a lot of wood,,,somethin with straw bales has also crossed my mind..so lets hear any thoughts you guys have ,no matter how strange they may be!!

Thanks Guys

Steve

Caves or abandon mine shafts come to mind. Is a giant igloo a possibility?:) It is about 53 degrees F if you are deep enough into the earth - below the frost line. $1,600. seems reasonable for a structure that will withstand the elements of the North country (snow loads, etc.).

Actually, I'd be interested to look at the shelter you are considering as it might fill a temporary need I have for storage of my tractor and construction materials. I doubt I've been any help to you but you could possibly help me with information on the temp garage if it will take 40 pounds/sq.ft. snow load and totally enclosed. TIA, Steve

Get an old refrigerated semi trailer, and take of the axles, and landing gear. There insulated a little bit. Or shipping containers, but they're cold and dark. Both would be tough, and temporary.

Not enough room for a car though...at least not enough to be able to work on one.I am gonna use the old school bus I am drivin out there as a bit of a work shop so that type of space is looked after .

I would look at renting garage space from someone.

Put an add in the paper that you are looking to rent a garage and see if you get any hits !!!!

Too much hassle...its pretty much in the middle of nowhere and would be at least a 1/2 hr drive anyplace close,I can work at the in-laws before I do that but its too easy to not do anything when you have the excuse that your project isnt out yer side door! I got a quote back for a good quality temp garage 18x30.......almost 5 grand! ...and thats before shipping and tax..

If you have a torch and welder, get two shipping containers side by side, weld em in a few spots then cut out the dividing walls. Then when you build a real shop use it as VERY secure storage.

Thats a great idea guys and would work great for tool storage once a real shop was put up ..........

...........BUT............

I dont thinks its a great "Temporary garage/shop" , one would have a lot of steel sitting in a yard that was good for nothing else if one needed to move it .

I'm not in the highest dollar of homes/neighborhood but even at my level a semi trailer or shipping container(s) would be real out of place looking.

Now if you knew you would keep these items on the lot one could put a nice looking peak roof on top & some paint / a tree or two and make it fit in.
