Hi,

I'm about to start renos on our new home and hope to have to clear out our old one before long. I need somewhere to store my basement stuff. The new place is pretty secluded, and zoning won't be a problem. I'm wondering about the plastic covered shelters I see on the internets. Anyone use them? Will they work for a year till I can start my barn.

Thanks

Murdock

This is a classic need for a leased shipping container.
Delivery charges would be the deciding factor.

Otherwise, I like these guys.

Their stuff performs the way they say.

Thanks. There's a guy here who sells containers but he wanted 4k for one with no delivery. I'm not sure if I could rent on I'll have to look. Those tents were what I had thought of I'll have to look around that site.

Not entirely sure whether this is what you are asking about, but I have one of these, and I'm entirely pleased with it. The zippers on the door lasted about two years. I like the light inside, so I solved the door problem by building a wooden frame front wall, with a roll-up door.. I like it a whole lot more now. Going on six years old, and it will be weathertight for a few more years before I replace the fabric. The steel structure is galvanized and plenty strong to last decades if you secure it well to the ground.

Before I built my garage I had a 12'x20' temporary shelter from a company called "Cover-It" that cost about $550. This was in the early to mid 1990's & cheaper ones ran about $300. I used it for 4 or 5 years & gave it to a friend who used it another 5 or 6 years until he moved. It was still in decent shape but had developed a few pin holes. Most of the cheaper ones are of a much lesser quality but should last you at least a year.

I had mine pulled very tight to shed water & snow & always made sure the snow never piled up on it. The only thing that was an issue is moisture that evaporated & lined the underside of the tarp material with water constantly. It would then drip all over the car I had in it. I vented the ends & even put plastic on the ground under a couple of inches of gravel but still had moisture. Be careful what you plan to store in it regarding what can be susceptible to moisture damage.

I used one of those $150 Shed-in-a-box things from Tractor Supply as a temporary chicken coop when I moved about 5 years ago. Used it for most of the Spring, Summer, and part of the Fall of my first year. I then gave it to my neighbor who is still using it as a storage shed. So aside from fading on the sun side it has held up fine for the better part of 5 years. I would put pallets down as a temporary floor if I was storing valuables...

The tent garages made of galvanized tubing and a big silver tarp would be perfect. Buddy keeps his tractor in one and he used buried legnths of rebar to anchor it. It has withstood 24" snowfalls and hurricane Sandy with zero damage to the structure or its contents.
