I thought it might be fun to see peoples lists. If you could only have 10 tools, not specific brands or anything, just the tool, what would they be? Sets don't count. You want sockets, one socket per spot; screwdrivers, one per spot etc

Pliers or wide wrench (17-27mm)
5 in vice grip with cutters
1/4 TM4CsA driver with DIN/JIS sockets (3-4 pieces 8-10-13mm)
Extension
T handle/breaker
2 in 1 handled driver.
Hex ket/multi-tool

Basic motorcylcle kit. But I would say it depends on what you need to work on.

Multi-tools hep get down your number, but they're kinda cheating.

(expensive, bulky, heavy, less effective than many real tools--like good bit-sets)

Only 10? Going along the lines of asking a genie for more wishes, how about just 1. A credit card to buy all the tools I need lol. Honestly I don't know if I could get by with just 10, but it would really depend on the situation and what the needs are. Is it for a motorcycle? Mountain bike? Hiking/camping? General household repair? I don't think there is a one size fits all 10 tool kit that will be of much help aside from the most raw of survival.

That is hard to list honestly. Maybe you could say top ten non ratchet/sockets/wrenches? Cause those are all needed and the 10 choices made at least a few would be compensating for not having those.

what would be even better is if the brand and model were included on these lists, since it is Christmas shopping season!

Some good suggestions above, so I'll draw somewhat from some previous lists:

10" adjustable wrench
10" channel locks
6" needle nose pliers with side cutter
Claw hammer
Tape measure
Pocket knife
1-1/2" putty knife
Manual hand-crank drill with bits in handle

1. Cordless Drill and bits
2. Cordless impact driver
3. 3/8 socket set
4. Large Knipex Cobra
5. Good LED flashlight
6. Leatherman wave
7. 25 foot tape measure
8. Jawhorse
9. sawsall
10. Fatmax Xtreme Fubar

With this set and some materials I could build a shelter; I could fix a car; I could fix about anything inside a house. It wouldn't always be easy or convenient, but it could get done.

If I had a few more spots I would go for a circular saw, a screwdriver set, a wrench set, a 1/4 inch socket set and a 1/2 inch socket set, a good hammer, a multimeter and a good set of medical shears.

After a few wrenches, hammers handsaws and similar, my first purchase was a drill motor, a bench grinder, then a crackerbox welder, followed by acet/oxy cutting/welding. A drill press, then a real compressor to replace the cheap one I had. A circular saw was a great addition, even better was the table saw. 40 years later my kid says its unbelieveable how many tools I have and even more incredible that I use them all.
