Been hanging out here for while, learning a bunch but never really had anything to contribute.
Well now I've got a hangar project underway that might be worth sharing.
The main hangar will be 60' deep by 70' wide and will have an attached 30'x52' shop. The attached concept picture gives the idea although there are differences in details like the roof line,color, etc.
The building itself is from Dandi.

The runway is a couple of lots away, accessible via a taxiway.
Got a 1936 Monocoupe, a Hatz biplane, a 1929 TravelAir 4D project, a 1927 TravelAir 2000 project, plus whatever customer projects I'll be working on.
I think I figured out why the pictures didn't load right. I'll see if I can fix them.

Nice looking planes. I work in the industry and my dad and I are working on our second Cessna 170 restoration. I cant wait to see the finished project.

I love quonset roofed hangars! You have great taste in hangars and planes! My first boss had a Travelaire 4000 that I got to stretch the bungees on, was a great learning experience. I also got a ride in Billy Dawson's Hatz at Bartlesville one year, they have always been a favorite of mine.

I will sure be following this one!

Will there be a rain gutter on the shop side of the hangar? (probably taking water to the rear) It just looks like a lot of potential water coming from the hangar towards the shop.

Thanks for the interest in the project..

I'm currently in Riverside California at Flabob airport but plan to relocate.

Restoring antique planes is what I do for a living now and it's what I plan to continue, albeit at a more relaxed retirement like pace.

I really liked the vintage look of the arched top hangar, but wasn't able to locate a manufacturer that was willing to build that configuration. I found one that would do the roofline in a gambrel style, but they were far more expensive than what I was willing to pay.

In the end, I went with a regular 4/12 gable with 24" eaves all the way around. Also going to install a 3' sidewalk all the way around with a 20' concrete apron in front of the main hangar, all in an effort to keep the water moving away from the structure. Even then, I'll probably wind up installing gutters at some point.

The building is scheduled to be delivered in the next couple of days, but they're going to give the concrete at least a full week to cure before putting any kind of equipment on it.

I've seen quite a few *regular* shaped hangars have an arched facade on the front to give the vintage look without the added cost etc.

Looks like a bi-fold door. You will only have about a 12' opening .Are you sure that will be enough.You never know what you will want in there later.Consider 14" in a one piece door.......Cable / hydro.

That's a great point and I considered it. On this piece of property, the house will be quite a bit higher than the hangar. That angle plus the orientation would have made a facade pretty obvious from the main viewing point. I guess I also wanted to avoid unnecessary complications and expense as well.
Gotta love those vintage art deco hangars though.

I went around and around trying to decide on the main hangar door. I've had bifolds in the past and they're fine, but they do eat up a lot of the opening height.
I considered bypassing rolling doors, but they're hard to seal, tend to be noisy if it's windy and they were surprisingly expense.
I ended up ordering a Higher Power hydraulic door. Unlike some of the pure swing out type hydraulic doors, the Higher Power design is fully self supporting on it's posts and puts no load into the building structure. If you visit their website, theres a video of one of the doors erected onto a bare slab and it opens and closes and balances like nothing you've ever seen.
The other cool thing is that it only eats up 6" of the opening height, so I'll have 13 1/2'.
The only thing I wasn't really crazy about was the external truss that's necessary to stiffen a door that wide. One of the options is for window in the door and when those are put in, it really disguises the truss and almost makes it look like a window awning.
The attached picture isn't my door, but it's the same brand and style and gives an idea of the appearance.

Awesome project! Do you know, or have you ever heard of, a gentleman in TN by the name of Joe Fleeman? He restores antique aircraft in Lawrenceburg, TN. He is the brother of my brother-in-law. Restoring planes is the only job he has ever known, a true craftsman.

Your biplane is looking great so far and your hangar is amazing.

Those planes deserve a great hangar. Sweet build (and planes). Can't wait to see the trusses going in, those will be huge!
