Lots of great advise here so far. (& some not so great)
I believe the best thing you can do it to avoid! Avoid the area, the person, the attack... whatever! Once you engage, your odds of you getting injured rises astronomicly(sp?)!
If you forced to engage, it's like SCscoutguy said "If you ever get into a fight is there is no such thing as a fair fight. Pick up whatever you can or do whatever is needed to inflict the most maximum damage to your opponent in the shortest time possible!"
You hear it all the time in boxing, MMA, K1. & most all combat sports... "strike & move"
Once you strike, (as soon as you can) MOVE! Get the flock outta dodge!
Your a runner, Use the skill you already have!
I like to run for exercise, after an incident while out running (out numbered & extremely tired), I started running with one of these.

I have only had to use it once & that was on a very pissed off dog that thought i looked tasty.
