Hello Garage journalists, I have a problem with my th200 transmission that's on my 1977 Chevy impala v8 305. Everything is all original, now lately my transmission isn't shifting into 2nd gear properly, it's shifting later then it should. All the other gears shift fining. Could it be the governor? The body valve or the throttle valve? Please message back and let me know your opinion, this problem is really annoying me...thank u

TH200 has a TV cable that controls shift timing and pressure. Cable could be out of adjustment or frayed. The TV Valve it controls (in the valve body) could be sticking, however almost always a sticking valve is the result of some internal failure causing ground metal or other debris to contaminate the fluid resulting in stuck valve/s so freeing the valve is not a cure. TV cable should be fully extended at full throttle position and move freely. Remove trans pan and inspect for ground metal or other debris. Intermediate band applies on the 1-2 upshift, band could be burnt and cause a 1-3 shift that is sometimes mistaken for a late 1-2 shift.

You still have a TH200? It might be the last one in existence. The others all failed at 30K miles and were replaced by TH350s so the cars could be driven.
Junk it and put in a used TH350. The car will then work troublefree for many years. The TH350 is a direct replacement for the TH200.

I used to have a 77 Impala years ago. I got it used and the TH200 died the first week I had the car. I put a TH350 in it and my Son still has the car.

Yes there was quite a bit of metal debris in the trans pan when I changed out the fluid and gasket, so this means it's more then likely A body valve problem? If that's the case I most likely will have to change it out for a 350, it's nice to know I might have the last th200 in insistence

A changeover to a TH350 is a possiblity, however it is not exactly a "direct replacement" 1. Fill tube and dipstick are different 2. Vacuum line needs to be installed 3. 350 uses a kickdown cable, different than the TH200 TV cable
4. Convertor cover is diffferent 4. Manual linkage cross shaft has to be shortened 3/4" None of which are major issues but will need to be addressed.

No, if you have ground metal it means you have a mechanical falure in the driveline of the trans (needs to be rebuilt) the resulting ground metal particles circulating in the fluid cause the valve/s to stick.
