I went out to the shop today to do a little sandblasting in the cabinet. Hmmm...no air pressure. DUH...turn on the compressor. Hmmm again...why is there no pressure, it usually holds air quite well.

Then I hear the hissing noise coming from the bottom of the tank. Put my hand under it and feel the pin hole, up from the bottom. Sanborn 5hp, 2 cylinder single stage, 60 gallon tank, bought sometime in the middle to late 70's. I've been hard on it early in its' life; sandblasting, painting, etc.

Looking around for a new one, and see that Farm & Fleet has a Husky 60 gallon upright for $449. Well, look at that...Home Depot has the exact same one for the exact same price. I tell my wife that we can get the one at HD with a 10% for Veterans. She says don't forget that Menard's has their 11% off sale going on. I said that I don't think they sell compressors.

What do you know? They do! And it's a Sanborn just like the one I've got now. With 11% off, it's $381, but I'll get another 2% for using my Menard's card. Cool.

Sell it I guess. Still runs great. I'm just glad that the tank didn't rupture and blow the place apart. I can handle a small leak.

Your mind is going to be blown when I tell you that HD has an 11% rebate form to compete with Menards. Can be found online.

I bought one like that. Cut out the bottom 8 inches of center out and rolled up some 1/4 and patched it with 7018.
Here come the armchair launched fireballs !!!DANGER, DANGER.
Find a good welder and fix the thing .Not a muffler guy---welder WELDER.

It's "weldOr"...
Any weldor worth their certs probably won't touch that. The company listed above does not mention they are ASME certified to do pressure vessel welding, but they can make you new springs or a driveshaft. :lol_hitti Couldn't resist...

Anyway, since the wife says go for it, don't look back. Personally, I'd look for a new receiver for the head if it still runs well.

Patch the Tank?
Tell that to the guy who had a 20 gallon tank blow when he walked in the garage.
Spent 6 months in rehab to regain the use of his hand. You know the one that is now missing some fingers.
Or tell that to the guy who had a 60 gallon blow half the wall and roof off from his shop and almost totally trash the rest of the building.
If it was a thick steel tank where the effect of HAZ may be lessened, then probably, maybe its ok to patch it? But the rolled steel tanks on these compressors just isn't thick enough to patch without risk.
Replacement tanks can be bought from Grainger BTW.

While a patch would probably be fine, I don't think it's worth the risk for $400. Plus if the tank rusted out the motor and head can't be too far behind. Enjoy your new compressor.

Well...for some reason, my pm's aren't sending. I want to sell it, as I don't have room. I'm thinking $125? for the whole thing, minus the power cord (couldn't find one today) and the drain and outlet valves. Everything else is there. I took a video of it before pulling the cord, but it seems that it also won't upload (MTS file).

Everyone complains about the risk of welding it up, but no one complains about a pinhole leak. Weld the tank up and use it until the compressor dies.

Tractor Jeff.....Where is the proof to the stories that you so speak of? I had a 60 gallon tank I welded and used it for quite a few years afterwards. It finally developed another pinhole leak, but it didn't blow my garage completely apart. All I heard was a slight Hhssssssssss.

After working with guys involved in two separate oil rig fires (due to pressure equipment failing) that severely injured people I wouldn't repair a pressure vessel unless I hydro tested it and had a UT thickness test done as well. Its just not worth the risk of the corrosion occurring in multiple places and you only got the worst spot out of 10 or 20 spots for a potential $400 savings.

Sold it today for a hundred to someone who wants the pump/motor as a backup. Had to deal with four flakes first, though. Geez....

hope that you were responsible enough to render that tank unusable before you sold it. If someone was stupid enough to attempt to repair it and it fails you might be liable.
