Bought some new pliers. Stiff and hard to open like a lot of "hot rivet" pivot pin type tools. Sprayed a little of this on it cause it was all I had on hand. They went from stiff to falling open. I'm sure there is a similar product on the market that is more readily available?

There are a lot of products that are "good".

If you do searches for Sailkote on sailing forums, the consensus is they all love this product, but it is pricey. Everyone has been looking for a cheaper alternative, but nothing performs like this does.

What's the active ingredient in it? Does it say somewhere on the product or is there an MSDS available for it? It's a dry lube, so is it PTFE?

I can't tell much from the MSDS, but this:

Product or Trade Name: Sailkote Aerosol
Chemical Name and Synonyms: Fluoropolymer Dispersion

Teflon (PTFE) is a fluoropolymer, so maybe it's just a teflon dry lubricant? Maybe test out a little Blaster Dry Lube?

What's interesting is their marketing says:

"Sailkote is typically five times as effective, and lasts much longer than, wax, oil or Teflon® based lubricants."

Yet the fluoropolymer is either Teflon or the same stuff.

There are lots of Fluoropolymers other than Teflon (PTFE.) There's a list of some on this page (scroll down to "Examples of fluoropolymers" table):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluoropolymer

This video states Sailkote is formulated with Krytox, which is Perfluoropolyether (PFPE):

I'm not familiar with Sailkote, but that would explain why it works well, and why it is expensive. But Krytox is a liquid, so it's not a true dry lube. Still, it doesn't attract dirt, so I guess it can sail by with the claim.

As for using it on tight pliers joints, I'm sure it would work, but I wouldn't use it right away. For tight pliers joints, I wash any oils out of the joint out with a solvent, then sit down at a TV show for a half hour while working it up and back the whole time. After that, wash the metal dust you've just made out, and THEN lubricate it. The difference will be amazing.

Interesting. I'd be worried for use on a sailboat a little bit about the claim from the vid screenshot that it 'bonds tenaciously to almost any surface'. That makes me think it's a bit like silicone in that respect and silicone is the bane of their existence anyone who has ever tried to repaint. I've heard it referred to as a silicone 'poisoned' surface as it's a nightmare to get off. No one should allow any product with silicone anywhere near their boat, save for maybe breast implants. lol

IIRC that Krytox is also sold as an aerosol spray. Probably more expensive than the Sailkote though.

Krytox is a super expensive O-ring grease we in the semiconductor industry used on vacuum systems. It was worth every penny. It doesn't out gas and was capable of being used in system that could pump down to 10-6 Torr. Really good stuff. I think it was made be either Dow Corning or Dupont I can't remember which.

Good stuff indeed! The tube I have (it's a few years old) is DuPont
