I try to put some of my "hobby" money I make back into improving my equipment and tools. So far I have made good purchases (new and used) that were defiantly worth the investment. But I think it's time to cool it for a while and let the new tool upgrades make their money back for a while.

Here's a list from the last year

Refrigerated air drier (new) **Awesome**

Sata 4000 Digital spray gun (new) **Awesome**

Plasma cutter (used) **Awesome**

Pressure feed sandblaster (new)

Craftsman 300 piece socket set (new)

Rotisserie (used) **Awesome**

Stud gun (new)

Shrinking disks (new)

There isn't really anything I NEED now to do my work better or faster so it's time to cool it. Time to stop running to HF just to use those 20% HF coupons and let my Sears points just sit there for a while.

I'm not complaining, just making a public statement that maybe will help me resist those "hot deals" that come around.

The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem .
Just say "no"
You might want to go to a TAA MEETING ....tool addiction anonymous.
Often goes undetected for years , leading to , no time , unwanted friends and even divorce!

Cool. Very understandable.

Here is a website you can probably use to pass away some of your newly found free time. Fun things to waste time

I think the only way this would happen for me is to be permanently banned from GJ. I cannot resist the "hot deals" et al.

Liar, Liar pants on fire. The only thing I don't like on your list is the SATA 4000. To me these are not as good as the Nr2000 or the Nr2000RP. The new 5000 is very nice and better than the 2000 series but the 3000 and the 4000 I don't think were as good as the 2000 series. This view is shared by many painters by the way as they keep trying to trade me their 3000's and 4000's for my 2000's.

All the cool guys hang out in hot deals section! Don't you want to be cool too?

What you could do is read all about the good stuff, then decide in your brain to look for USED tools like the ones people like on GJ. That way, you won't be buying as much and when you do it won't cost as much either! The fun is in the hunt! So make the *hunt* more difficult to achieve. You will spend less, accumulate less, and really appreciate the good stuff when you do find it. - Paul

Wow, tough crowd. Can't I at least get a shout out for spending over $3k on tools and equipment in one year? Or at least a "you ****!" for only spending that much on what I did get? (not to mention the new 20x30 shop I built the year before)

OK OK how about "No more buying tools over $50 for the next six months". Will that bring me back into the good graces of the GJ tool expenditures police? :)

I've heard this before and not doubting what your saying. I guess it depends on what your used to and personal preference. When I was shopping for a gun I tried to buy the best available and the limited input I got pointed to the 4000 and the gun I had was just OK so it was a huge improvement. Regardless I'm very happy with it and have sprayed two completes with heavy metallics and pearls and was thrilled with how it laid down paint.

To me buying tools is like getting drunk. The worse my "hangover" is the longer I can go without. Once I don't feel bad about it anymore I stupidly start right back over again. I'm currently tool hungover.

At least with a tool hangover when you sober up you still have the tool along with the headache

Well I'm gonna to go then! And I don't need any of this. I don't need this stuff, and I don't need *you*. I don't need anything. Except this. (picks up ratchet)!

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this ratchet... And this hammer drill. - The ratchet and the hammer drill and that's all I need... And this socket organizer. - The ratchet, the hammer drill, and the socket organizer, and that's all I need... And these torx drivers. - The ratchet, and these torx drivers, and the socket organizer, and the hammer drill... And this drop light. - The ratchet, this hammer drill, and the socket organize, and the drop light, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... I need this. - The hammer drill and the cordless impact, and the socket organizer, and the torx drivers for sure. Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

There are five stages to tool withdrawl. They can be overpowering, but with the proper medication and behaviorial modification therapy, you might be able to overcome them.

They are:

1. Denial and Isolation

You're going to think that it's no big deal. No more new tools. You're going to be fine and you'll have a thick wallet to show for it. You visit GarageJournal less to avoid any temptation. Then you stop checking out "deals" on ratchets on Ebay and Craigslist. Cripe Distributing? Who needs 'em? Take the link off your "Bookmarks" list. Pretty soon, you're watching a four-year old episode of NOVA on PBS where they go over the mating cycles of yeast. It's cool, bro.

2. Anger

Hey, this is stupid. Why am I getting so worked up over owing a tool made in Taiwan when I could have bought an American version for only a few bucks more. Sure, I'd LIKE the American Pitman Arm puller but I'm not going to fish out $95 for one! Idiotic! It's moronic that I used to do that! I could have bought a nice jetski for the money I wasted! Someone get me a beer! This is really starting to piss me off! I'm getting worked up over nothing. Damnit! I need to get online and check out the reviews of this American tool. Maybe they have a German version. Hell, WTF?!?

3. Bargaining

Maybe I could just sell my Chinese digital caliper and get a few bucks for the Japanese Mitutoyo I should have bought in the first place. Let's see... I could get maybe $15 for the used one. That'll only make the new one $135. But I won't have to keep resetting it to zero and the battery will last longer with the auto shut-off. I could go to Craigslist and sell that and the Craftsman sockets I don't need because I replaced them all with S-K after watching the brand comparison article on ToolReviews back in 2013. I could maybe get $40 for the USA Craftsman sockets since they're getting more valuable now that everything's being made in China. That'll push me under $100 for the Mitutoyo digital caliper. Maybe I should ask my wife if she's cool with it. If she is, then no big, right? Maybe I should flip a coin. You can't blame fate.

4. Depression

I'm sick of this stupid no-name adjustable wrench. It doesn't fit the nut squarely. I can't believe I spent $39 on it and it keeps stripping nuts. Maybe there's another tool I could use instead... oh hell, who cares? I can put off the flagpole repair until later. It's too cold outside anyway. Maybe there's a basketball game on. I need a beer. I can't believe my life's come to this. What's the point? No one puts up flags anymore, anyway. The neighbors all hate the noise it makes when the clasp hits the pole in the wind anyway. What's scrap metal going for these days? I need to lie down.

5. Acceptance

You know what? I think this is the best thing I've ever done. And you know what? I deserve it! (turn to the mirror) Because I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and, doggonit, people like me!

Oh, he also needs that chainsaw blade sharpers. He could use one of those 20% coupons. LOL

And don't forget the tool storage locker to keep it all in, the new gas can for the 50:1 mix, the new small funnel, the storage rack for the firewood, and the welder to build the storage rack.

It just like drinking the cheaper booze the worse the headache is: So when you wake up in a pile of HF stuff you know it going to be a really bad headache.

:bs:

Yeah and my 9 year old nephew doesn't want any more toys from Toys R Us.

You don't have to lie to us, we understand your pain. We all come here for our daily counseling. This is better then counseling though, because we encourage the habit. It's more like tool therapy.

Ok Ok how about this, it was all a big ruse to save up money to some big ticket tools I really want.

Boy do I feel better having let it out and being honest with myself and fellow GJ tool junkies. Thank you GJ!!

This has been a very productive therapy session. In fact I probably saved myself $1000 by not seeing a shrink soooooooo.............. Maybe I CAN get one of those tools, I mean, the money would have been spent either way right?
