I’m trying to figure out if I’m nuts or didn’t imagine this. Did/does Home Depot & Lowe’s have a competitive 5 gallon bucket exchange program? I swear I remember reading about taking in buckets from one store to another and they would exchange them for their own.

I’ve googled it, searched the forums here. Can’t find anything. Please put my mind at ease....

I guess I don't understand?
What's wrong with the bucket that it needs to be exchanged for one with a different brand on it?

If the bucket exchange involved my old dirty busted bucket I may be interested to advertise for them if I'm headed there for supplies otherwise not worth the time or gas.

Lowes does it for their "Contractor Days". During that promotion you can bring in an old HD, Menards or other 5 gal bucket & exchange it for a new Lowes branded one. I don't believe it's a standing everyday deal though, just during that week.

Nice thing about the Lowe’s bucket is a little solvent and a paper towel and the white paint comes off. Just a nice blue bucket after that. It won’t work with the HD buckets.

I also remember something like that. I don't remember the details on the offer, but it did exist at one time, and I think both Lowes and HD did it.

So you are not crazy. Or maybe we both are :lol_hitti

Ok, I’m glad someone remembers it. The good thing is they could be cracked and they would still replace them. The Lowe’s buckets seem to have a UV issue and get very brittle after they are out in the sun for a period.

Anyways, I have about 5 from each store I’d like to turn in. Contractor days might be right. Will have to search for that, see what time of year it was. Not sure these will last.

Our Home Depot still does the dirty bucket exchange. We swap out paint buckets, mortar buckets etc almost daily. It’s really nice to always have new buckets

The 2 blue lowes buckets I have ****. They have both split at the bottom and are worthless now. I now get Pickle Buckets from Firehouse Subs for 2 bucks with a lid and they donate the money to charity... Have to let them air out as the smell like pickles, go figure.

I caught the promotion last year, don't remember the time of year though.
I just happened to have some in the truck that day and saw the sign in the store.Any bucket could be exchanged. It was 5 cents for a new one.

FYI - Harbor Freight is giving away a free bucket with a $25.00 purchase over Super Bowl weekend. I haven't see one in person but how do you f#$% up a bucket?

Cheers

The HD ones are pretty tough. I used one as a "temporary" base for my mailbox post, lasted through a nasty winter and almost another year before I fixed the post properly. The bucket was faded from the sun, but otherwise OK.

I have never paid for a 5 gallon bucket in my life, so to trade in one with one brand name on it for another serves no purpose for me.
