Thanks for the concern, guys. It was one of those reminders of how good I have it -- you realize how quickly your life could take a terrible turn.

I know. It's currently commanding just about exactly the value of the dollar bill sitting next to it in the picture. :)

It's a vise I bought by accident, and I boasted to my wife that I'd be able to sell it for more than I paid. Now it's kind of a challenge (which is why I didn't offer it for sale in the classifieds). But who knows? It might go out the door for a lot less than what I paid. We'll have to see what the market thinks.

Glad to hear Mrs. Olsen wasn't hurt in the accident. Even if not a physical injury, a car accident will rattle you cage and keep you on your toes for a while.

That vice looks huge! And those signs are impressive - photographs on aluminum. Something to think about. If you are impressed with them, maybe throw up a link to the source.

And the 800x600 settings work well on my screens as well.

Ditto. Glad all is well and your wife is safe. Some people should just slow down and take a deep breath when they drive:)

Fuel Efficiency is great...until you have an accident, then it hardly seems worth the savings. Just my 2p. VERY glad there weren't any injuries

.

I've always asked people the same thing. When you're laying in the hospital after an accident where your car was crushed because of it's thin, but economical construction, was it really worth the $400.00 or so in fuel savings per year?

I drive a Suburban.:p

I know we're getting off topic here, but I hit a deer at 60 mph in my Honda Fit last fall. $6000 damage to the car, not a scratch on my wife or me. Modern automotive engineering (no matter the car size) is a great thing. Very glad I wasn't in the MGB -- or motorcycle. :eyecrazy:

Good to hear your wife is okay, Jack. Scary stuff.

Agreed. . . the old school ignorance of "bigger is better" is just irritating. Don't buy cheap, used, old **** and you'll be just fine. You have a better chance of walking away from a wreck in a new Corolla then you do in a suburban these days.

Glad the wife is ok!

I can bid $20 for the vice. Seriously, how much do you want for it?

This statement is just as ignorant as saying "Bigger is better".

Thanks, everyone.

I'll pass along the good wishes to my better half.

On the vise, I would encourage GJ-ers not to bid on it. There's nothing wrong with it. It's a great vise. But the whole point of this sale for me is to get as much for it as the market will bear. Having let on to my wife that I bought the thing by accident, I insisted that I could sell it for more than I paid. She was skeptical. So now I've got to prove I was right. Because, you know, well, because I've got to. :willy_nil

Wow Jack...Accident's are scary. Glad to hear all is well. You're right...when something like that happens, it can really make you count your blessings! Hug the kids and wife and give thanks!

On the vice.....you encouraged GJ'rs not to bid :dunno: ....With your notoriety, I think we'd be crawling over each other to own a piece of the 12 Gauge...a Jack Olsen original. I'd do a "Buy it Now" for at least double any offer I've seen so far! Seriously though...it's not a perfectly restored original, but it's got a nice look to it.

Thanks for sharing.....

Add me to the list of people glad to hear your wife is without injury. Like you said, its convenient that you can just walk away from it, being a rental and all - happy to hear that worked out for you. Maybe that incident is telling you to skip the whole mini-van thing :dunno:

As for your placards - we use a sheet material at work for our custom control panels called "Photometal". We get it both ways - black lettering with bare aluminum field or silver lettering with black field, depending on the application. Setup charge can be a little pricy, as I think you already found out with some of the others.

I can heartily agree and offer some real world observations to the auto safety discussion.

I've seen a few serious car wrecks (I'm a firefighter by day, and night for that matter) and late-model cars of all makes seem to fare equally well. I've been most impressed by late-model Toyotas (mostly because I've seen those in more than a handful of multi-vehicle collisions) and their roof integrity in rollovers. Older cars fare proportionally worse in serious accidents.

Glad the missus was okay... there's something to be said for knowing your family is traveling in a safe vehicle (that is also efficient and functional). I suppose we could have debate about the necessity of driving such large vehicles to be safe, but until those that drive ridiculously (and unnecessarily) large SUVs, pickups, etc., decide to "disarm", doing so may be unavoidable to ensure your (and my) family feels safe.

And good luck with the ebay'ing of the vise... don't forget to mention that it comes from "the epic, legendary, award winning garage of the infamous Jack Olsen." That'll surely drive the bidders into a frenzy. :D

Jack are you more Norwegian or more Swedish?

I'm 100% Norse, and I've got the trifecta: impatient, stubborn, and strong enough to really hurt myself when it all lets go.

Quality is always appreciated Jack, Wilton vise with your touch = a very nice price right now with 7 days to go.

Jack - well done. I have followed you over on the Pelican site and stumbled on this one in search of some unique ways to install a wash basin.

I am a small fan of the 911.

Most folks are amazed at what can be done in a standard two car garage, I consider it an extension of my home and office and spend quite a bit of time there fixing, rebuilding and tinkering.

I setup my garage to work on my cars and bikes (motor and pedal) and it seems that is where me and my 3 little boys spend most of our time. By the looks of your garage I am now infused with all sorts of new ideas and projects. I also have always loved old tools, machines and equipment and now I need to add to my arsenal based on your thread.

Anyway great work and great thread.

Here is a pic of my setup:

I've been working on a website about my garage.

The problem, as I see it, is that this thread is getting so big (with so many diversions) that it's tough to recommend it to someone who wants to know the basic stuff about the garage. The web site is a place where the whole place can be toured, while this thread remains the place where the discussions about it can still take place.

I've never done a website before, and I'm barely half finished with the thing at this point. It's occurred to me that making the website for the garage might involve more work than the garage itself. :willy_nil

But I'd be interested in anyone's input at this point. It's not too late to fix bigger mistakes, now. So if you've got a minute, and would like to take a bench-by-bench trip through the place, give it a click and let me know what you think.

The address?

www.12gaugegarage.com

Here's a screen grab of the front page.

Yep, it looks like they're down now. Hope it's not something I did.

Thanks, in any case. Hopefully it'll be up again soon, and I can read what Zeke said.

Looks good. I have a question and a suggestion.
Question, what program did you use to create the webpage?
I do small webpage myself and I am very curious.

And suggestion is that when we click on your link at the top of the page to "The Car" you don't have it open up into a new window. You usually don't through users/fans, etc away from your webpage. If you have an outside link like that on it you have it open up into a new window. Like this webpage here does.

Over all it looks very nice.

Well, the good news is: the site seems to work across all the platforms (well, at least the ones in my house).

The bad news is: I think I picked the worst web hosting company out there. I might have to transfer everything to another provider.

1Garageman, I work on a Mac, so I'm using a program called RapidWeaver. It must be pretty simple, since I've been able to figure it out. I bought a design 'theme,' from another vendor, which was probably not necessary. But it allowed me to do the slideshow thing on the main page.

I'm happy with the whole experience, except the service provider. Oddly, it didn't go down at all in the time I was putting it together. But now it seems to be offline more than it's online.

Glad your wife walked away from the accident!!! I used to work in the field and drive all over LA County. Its crazy out there.

Very nice garage setup you have Sir! I've been following your thread for quite sometime now and just love it. Its a + since you a local and I also head to Willow Springs. But I only do the baby course (Streets of Willow) and thanks for preparing me for Big Willow. Lastly your 911 makes me look forward to restoring my uncle's 944

Neat site, Jack. Need to spend a minute with it when I get a chance.

I've used a hosting company called Bluehost for years and have been happy with the service and performance. Cheap and reliable.

It looks pretty good. I couldn't even get on the site last night, but this morning it opened up quickly. One thing I'd suggest is to make it more obvious that clicking on the car button or the GJ button will take you to a different website.

And why is being taken to another site a bad deal? Jack's site is a personal tribute site, nothing commercial, profit minded or promoting anything. It's just a fun place to go and visit his garage and the extensions of what is supported by the garage.

OTOH, the site that Jack takes you to is germane because he is also a moderator over there and his car is used in that site's business promotion.

As I understand it, the purpose of the site is to condense the information in this thread which is now 105 pages long and has wandered about discussing just about everything except what Jack likes to eat.

Thanks, guys.

I think the site just disappearing is a little confusing when you click on the car or GJ links. I'm going to change that. The jump to the Pelican Parts site isn't something I want to keep -- it was just laziness on my part to not do a new page for the car. Sooner or later, I'll get that done.

I want to link the garage site to this thread, since I don't want to displace this thread with the website. I prefer this discussion here, but the more-salient stuff about the garage is mixed in with a lot of discussion. If someone says that they'd like to know more about the garage, telling them to wade through 105 pages of this is a little much.

I want the 'ten-cent tour' to be over there and the 'discussion' to be over here, if that makes sense.
