Re: Lista Cabinets come to the 12-Gauge Garage -- and I've got questions

Jack,

The drawer details look like the details in my Vidmar cabinets and the pulls have the same profile. The differences are the center lock opening and, the pulls are wider on your cabinets. Vidmar and most others modular cabinets except Lista are 30" wide and 28 1/2 deep.

Steve

The Lista Standard Cabinet (Model SC) is 28-1/4" wide x 28-1/2" deep. Way back when, Lista had a side lock mechanism then went to a center lock. Jack has one of each design: one is real old, the other is real, real old.

The handle on the old Lista cabinets was very similar to most other made a long time ago. The Lista handle today if formed integral to the front face of the cabinet and has a plastic handle cover with a flip up window to make it easy to label. Today's Lista drawer handle is also flush with the front face of the cabinet. The drawer face is actually set back 7/8" of an inch.

If anyone wants to play with a LISTA cabinet SketchUp model you can download the HS750 model in the picture from our web site.

SketchUp is free for the standard configuration. There is no need to download the Pro version to use this model. Hint: Try using the Interact with Dynamic Components feature on the cabinet drawers to see them open for a look inside. Use Rotate to look around the cabinet in 3D.

==> Bull : What is the drawer configuration in your DW1050? How about colors? We'll do up a SketchUp model for you.

Re: Lista Cabinets come to the 12-Gauge Garage -- and I've got questions

Question for Motorhead Extraordinaire, Are these cabinets drawers rated for 165 pounds or 440? I'm thinking they may only be rated for 165 pounds as it doesn't look like they extend all the way and I don't see any carriages?

Very nice work Jack. You do some amazing work.

I ran out of time. But here's where it stands.

Here's the thing I meant about having a space for the steel plate bench.

Re: Lista Cabinets come to the 12-Gauge Garage -- and I've got questions

Jack,

I am not sure of the capacity of your drawers but I would suspect that they are 165 lb. capacity, especially if they are 85% extension.

I am very familiar with the current and the last drawer designs. The most recent design change happened about 5 years ago.

Last Generation (~ 5+ years old) use a two part suspension system with a tray underneath the drawer on the 440 lb. capacity drawers. At the same time there was a 165 lbs., 85% extension, system used mostly in small NW, MP, and ST cabinets. All other cabinets used the 440 lb system identified by the tray underneath the drawer.

About 5 years ago LISTA did a major redesign of the suspension. Gone were the suspension trays and a new glide was implemented with 100% extension on all models. The smaller NW and NS cabinets use the 165 lb. version, the MP or ST can be ordered with the 165 lb. or 440 lb. versions. All other cabinets get the 440 lb. version.

I hope this helps to explain the drawer differences.

Regards,
Joe

Thanks, guys. I just did a little PhotoShopping to try the two color paths. (Of course, I could also make the cabinet all green. But I didn't PhotoShop that option.)

A or B? It's hard to tell with the bench only partially reassembled, but what do you think? I'd paint the handles to match the ones on the bench next to it.

Is there a C option? Charcoal grey with black drawers?

I like green ('A'). But it would be hard for me to not then paint the workbench to match.
I might even consider green with cream colored drawers (or some creamy color that matches the rest of your palette in there). Right two compatible colors from earlier in this friend made my think of that:

Thanks, Zeke.

It's welded. I cut out a piece out of the plywood behind it for a little better fit.

It's painted. It came down to the paint I could get at Home Depot, because of being there for other reasons -- which meant the Regal Red won.

Everything's drying tonight. Then I'll put it back together this weekend if I get some time. But the wife might have other ideas about my time. Hopefully, I'll at least get the progress pictures posted.

I really appreciate all the input I got. I came close to changing the shop's whole color scheme.

My Lista cabinets, bought well used, use these nylon clips to hold the tracks in place. I need two or three and have tried to get some from Lista without success. Our Lista sweetheart here was helpful but techies never responded.

It looks like one of your cabinets uses these clips and all are missing.

I only found one reference to the clips on the Lista site and they were in a PDF assembly instructions.

If you find a source would you please let me know?

Jack, slightly off topic and a hijack - I'm looking at your air line coupler underneath your vice.

Where did you get it? Brand? I have a need for two of these.

Thanks.

Those colors are pretty great. If I was a little less lazy, I might chuck all the red and go with that blue.

I had two, and lost one of them today while welding. I've been trying to think of something else that would work. But if I find any more, I'll let you know.

You mean the air reel? I'm pretty sure it's a Coxreels reel. I got it used on Ebay.

I just looked at today's pictures. Turns out I didn't take pictures of the big steps. But I did get some.

The older of the two boxes had taken a hit on the top at some point and had a bend in the top piece. I used some C-clamps to straighten it out. For a stiff piece to use as a guide, I unbolted one of the feet from the section of cabinet I cut off yesterday. It's heavy, 10-gauge steel.

gapfix.jpg

I later knocked out the lock cylinder and welded up all of those holes on the face.

But then, I also made some holes. Since the air line will have to sneak along behind the new bench, I cut a couple in the hidden part of the cabinet.

holea.jpg

Here are the handles, right after paint:

handlesz.jpg

I made a really dumb decision on the faces. I tried to save time masking by substituting a roller for spray cans. The cheap little roller I used had loads of lint in it -- which is now so consistent in the semigloss black that it looks like I did it on purpose. I've decided that it will make more sense to claim it was on purpose than to sand and repaint. (We'll see how much it bugs me once everything's installed.)

Re: Lista Cabinets come to the 12-Gauge Garage -- and I've got questions

on the older Lista cabs, the drawers can be locked internally and externally with a steel rod and padlock.

when our pit cabinets are on the transporter going cross the Continent, we would prefer to use the later method because it's stronger(we load them up heavy, for real) and more importantly, if the locking mechanism ever gets messed up, a cut-off wheel will take care of it in 10 seconds, so we don't get stuck by the race track with all the parts and tools locked up.

if you don't worry of theft, then you don't even need the padlock, 1 rod going through all the drawer pulls can prevent any drawer to open, because by design, only 1 drawer can be opened at a time.

CIMG1404.jpg

The Lista's we had, there was a hole at the back top corner. Once in a while the cabinet would lock and there was no key to it. You can take a 1/4" rod and go in through the hole, once you hit the lock mechanism, shove it as it's on a pivot and it will unlock the drawers.

I have seen lots of ways folks have broken in to LISTA cabinets from cutting holes to drilling out locks. I can usually get into a locked LISTA cabinet in about 15 seconds without additional holes or any destruction at all. For obvious reasons I can't just post this information for the world to read. If anyone needs to get into their LISTA cabinet PM me or email to [email protected] and we'll help you open your cabinet.

One other note about using LISTA's in a mobile application. The cabinets should be fitted with Individual Drawer Latches (IDL's)for very important reasons: 1) When all the drawers are shut, all drawers can open at the same time. The drawer interlock trips when one drawer is opened to prevent others from opening, and 2) I recently had a race customer who was using a HS1350, 10-Drawer cabinet bolted in his trailer, locking it during travel using just the key. The cabinet was originally intended for stationary use, not mobile. Without IDL's installed, all of the in-out load of the drawers was on the lock bar, not the side of the housing that the IDL's latch into, as this trailer rocked and rolled down the road. The end result was the constant motion and vibrations broke the bottom lock bar mounting point. Luckily the top mounting stayed intact so the drawers only ended up being pulled out a progressing amount top-to-bottom of a couple of inches. We installed IDL's and they were able to safely travel to another race weekend.

One last thing ... The road shock and vibration can sometimes cause a lock bar to flip into the locked position. Your can usually re-flip it with a key as long as the key was not in the top drawer of your locked cabinet.

One of those times where the project gods step in and give you a hand. Kinda makes up for some of those times when they kicked that bolt you needed into the most inaccessible corner of the shop.

Some say to roll the new roller over masking tape to pull off the loose fibers. I think this may work OK on some of real short nap rollers. I prefer to wash them and spin them out. Better yet is too use them for a primer coat which will get sanded anyway, wash and reuse. The 2nd time out they don't leave lint.

Also, the little foam rollers do work. I thought I hated them like I hate a foam brush, but I was surprised at how well they roll out paint on small jobs.

Then, of all things blasphemous, a guy was using one of those painter's pads on some new windows. I was snickering at first until he totally kicked my *** in speed with similar quality to my brushing.

I bought one.

Normally I would be embarrassed to show something like that to anyone. Not anymore. And I'm a union trained painter from the the '70's.

I've used one of those little squeegees, and I was impressed.

Here's where things stand. Re-routing electrical and the air line slowed things down today. (So did two kids who refused to nap.)

Still a lot of little things to finish off (and touch up).

You should be able to easily sell the stack of Craftsman boxes and recoup some of the cost of the Lista's. It looks great.

Yeah, I was shocked that those foam $2.79 rollers work pretty well. I used one painting Rustoleum Hammertone on a beam in my garage so it wasn't a long job but it was an oil based paint and it held up for the 30-40 minutes I used it. I agree those foam brushes are a total waste of money and time. I've used one a couple of times and each ripped within only moments of starting - never again.

Jack, The new cabinets (or is it singular, "cabinet"?) looks great. C'mon, you GOTTA be about done in there aren't you:bounce: Every time I think you've got as good a garage as you could possibly have, you think of a way to make it better! Great job.

Re: Lista Cabinets come to the 12-Gauge Garage -- and I've got questions

Thanks, guys.

How do you move something as heavy as this new cabinet into a tight space like this corner?
The answer is that I need to basically take apart one of the benches in order to make enough room. But on this project, I also had to shorten the brown bench on the left by two inches. So, it had to come apart for that. Then it was a simple matter to slide one of the supporting stacks of drawers over to the left so I'd have room. From that point, I just rolled the thing in on top of a furniture dolly. I took the drawers out to make it weigh less, and wore steel-toed boots when I was moving it.

Jack, that looks fantastic. I'm amazed at how much work you've gotten done in only a few days. I think I could drag this project out over three months...

I either get stuff done quickly or not at all. Ask my wife how the back yard deck project is coming. :headscrat

Yep. I think this is the last big project for the garage. There just isn't room for anything more.

I've got one idea for a last modification on the cabinet(s) I just put in. I'm going to try to do that tomorrow. Then, back to the day job.

You need to get something like thin metal flashing and slip it into those handles to hide the holes. The factory used to use poster board and [lastic so you could label the drawers but those yellow out. I think some of the polished aluminum flashing would look good.

That's a great idea, Kevin. I was thinking of using a label printer onto adhesive backed stock. But sooner or later I knew that the paper would get punched out where the holes were. Now I've got to find out if I can source flashing in that narrow a width.

Or maybe black plastic (wouldn't yellow) and then use a clear label with white lettering.

Fantastic garage, Jack!

If I could find the right width of some old metal window blinds, it'd work.

And thanks!

I trimmed around where it sinks into the wall, and put a cap piece on top that's just a piece of wood with the edges rounded.

The project is pretty much done, now. The last part of it is to clean everything behind where the photographer is standing.

Unbelievable. Awesome awesome awesome. I like the color and I think the new stack looks great. No doubt gives you more room. I spent the last day and a half cleaning up my small space and wish I hadn't seen this . . .mine didn't involve "Lista" "Welding" or five pages of discussion! More awesome work as usual Jack you keep a lot of us inspired.

Thanks. I just got out a calculator and did some math. My old combination of the triple stack Craftsman box and the Harbor Freight 13-drawer box had a combines 25,585 cubic inches of storage in it. In the same space (more or less) the new bench and cabinet give me a total of 69,442 cubic inches of storage. I have a place to sit now... and also 271% more room to store tools.

The old set up was fine. But I hate to waste space.

Then:

(And I hope no one minds: I'm going to merge this thread with my main garage thread. It got bigger than I expected, and I think has a lot of useful input in it.)

Thanks, guys.

That's excellent news. Because it wasn't the string that had me worried for the boy. It was the building with the 6 grinders, a drill press, a welder, a circular saw that can cut metal, a band saw, etc etc etc, that has me worried for little kids. But that's only for the next, oh, 17 years or so, that you have to worry about him getting an eyeout or a fingeroff or burning the garage, wait, lot, wait, this is SoCal, entire neighborhood to the ground.

So for the time being, I'm glad you have a boy that listens. Of course, you built that, too. (For now. In ten years...)
I've got a deadbolt lock ready to go that I'm going to put up and out of his reach. He doesn't go out there without permission right now, but I'd rather never find out the hard way that he disobeyed me when I wasn't there. I got away with a fair amount of stuff with my own dad, and it's fine if he isn't always 100% straight with me. But I don't want him to lose a finger or an eye that way.

I enjoyed the video and thought of the contrast of your life to mine. If you ran that camera a 1000' above my place you might see 6-10 houses and 3 of those would be mine. I cannot fathom living in such a densely populated area. One of my cousins married a musician from Chicago. She brought him out here and the quiet drove him nuts, and the concept of going to bed and getting up with the sun was totally foreign to him. Glad your teaching your children though. It is a hard thing to do in this day and age.

lg
no neat sig line
It's true. Even by the standards of where I grew up, 1/8 of an acre is a TINY piece of land. And my neighbors sleep less than 20' from where I'm cutting steel in the garage. I try to be courteous with my schedule as it relates to them. And I have to say, they're great people -- very tolerant of my quirks.

I'm not sure which one was the little boy in the video. I think they both are under the care of the Mrs. ;) :D
She's the boss. There's no doubt about that.

Jack, the video of the balloon camera was cool, especially since it involved your son. Just think, this may be his introduction to 'space travel'; who knows, he may be on a future Mars mission.

When he is just a bit older, I can imagine you two constructing the 'Blimp-O-Cam' and flying it all over L.A. lol Before long, Max will be 'piloting' a videocam over your race track, getting Dad and his car racing the circuit!
There's a video out there of a father/son that sent an HD camera and an iPhone up into low-orbit space under a weather balloon. That was definitely in the back of my mind on this project. The trouble is, where I live I don't know that the iPhone would work as a way to locate the landed camera (via GPS) or if it would simply be immediately stolen and pawned. But one day, I think it would be fun to send a bigger balloon up and not have a tether. But we're going to have to find a safe place to do it.

And I've seen some amazing race footage (the Nurburgring in Germany, I think?) shot with four-propeller drones. I think they'll eventually replace helicopters in movie making. (Maybe they already have?)

Hi Jack,
Love your garage! I followed this thread for a long time but haven't visited it recently. Looks like you've been keeping busy!

I meant to comment to your phone a while back (or maybe I did and don't remember! ;-). I've got a 554 (ca. 1958) hanging in my garage, but I'm thinking a 354 would look better. May have to score one.

If you ever find yourself with nothing else to do (yeah, right!), there's a way you can tighten up the coils on that handset cord:
http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=202.0

Thanks for all the inspiration!
Thanks for that link. It just went on my list! (I think I'll try the hairdryer, so I don't have to disconnect anything.)

Phew! That was an epic read! Well done sir!

I saw the part where you discussed the lighting and the motion detectors but you didn't mention why you went with compact florecent instead of regular tube florecents (sp?). Most big shops (and my little one) run these so I figured they must be on to something.

You've inspired me to re-organise my little shop. At first glance you appeared to be OCD clean but happily you also included pics of a messy garage with work in progress. It finally dawned on me to start and finish a job instead of having three of four "work in progress" activities going on. So much more bench space now with everything stashed neatly away until I actually work on it!

Nice car too, I've got a 3.0CSi from 1972. A great year!
Thanks. When my garage is messy, it's VERY messy. But when it's clean, it's pretty darned clean. :)

Great video Jack and Max. What kind of a camera did you use? and where can I get one? Some day Id like to visit California I have a cousin that is a Writer/ Producer in LA. Thanks for sharing your Garage and adventures.
Thanks. Most of the video was shot on a little Canon Powershot Elph 300 HS. I think it might be broken, as there's a clicking sound it makes as it re-focuses. But it works. The non-hand-held shots were made on my wife's Nikon still camera (which also shoots video). And the eye in the sky shots were made with a little $38 keychain fob camera.

After a week of reading this thread (thing called "work" gets in the way of fun), I finally got to the end.

Question: Jack, you never mentioned anything about cleaning up. Do you just use a bench brush and a Shop Vac or do you have a dust collector? Where do you keep the Shop Vac?

Beautiful garage!!
Thanks. There's a shop vac in the cabinet to the right of the inch-thick steel bench. There's also a Toro leaf blower in there. A quick sweep of the big stuff and then a walk-through with the leaf blower is really just about all I ever do. The leaf blower gets everything, everywhere. I mostly use the shop vac for cleaning dirt out of the race car.

Re: Lista Cabinets come to the 12-Gauge Garage -- and I've got questions

Jack, a more significant (to me) measurement for tool boxes is square inches of drawer space. (Which isn't difficult, measure one and multiply) ;)

And the question everyone whats to know: Is it full yet?
