Thanks, 55cadillacking. It wasn't something I had installed. Water moves left to right in it, and then drops down lower to a pipe that wraps all the way across, and then all the way down the length of my little 1/8-acre slab to a low point at the street. I'm not sure why the previous owner felt he needed such a long set of grates and a trench-style train -- it's not like the driveway drops toward the garage -- but in really heavy rains, it helps to keep water from getting into the garage.

Thanks for the response. For me, the trench would be great for corralling the water I'd be pushing out of the garage on to the driveway. I wonder if that was the original owner's thought process when he had it installed. Anyway, thanks for explaining your drainage system. It helps me learn more about the possibilities.

Hi Jack,

Here's a book I saw in Germany last weekend. The 12-gauge garage is on the cover and there are 2 pages about garages in general inside.

Are you aware of this? They 'forgot' to give you some credits.

That garage is yellow not green and the Porsche isn't black... I don't see any similarities here at all... And my German is rusty but I think the main character is about a woman named Fraulein Jackie.

Wow. That's crazy.

Thanks for finding that, Dennis. I guess now I know what my car would look like if I painted it yellow.

This is one of those 'wouldn't happen but for the internet' things. But the internet also means it's not possible to get away with this sort of thing anymore.

My garage isn't any kind of a business. I don't want to make it into that. So this isn't a case of me worrying that the image is being exploited for someone else's financial gain (althought it is, even if it's a negligible amount of money). But it would have been nice if they'd asked permission. I would have been flattered that they wanted to use it.

I've written to the guy. We'll see what he says.

Kind of strange to see a cartoon/illustration of a piece of my own house. He changed my pliers to Channellocks.

Look at the arched bend under the table on the right.

Ok
Thought you were serious for a sec. But there's no way you could be...

Ya know, the color-corrected version would make a great T shirt.

That it would. Especially with the name of the cover, 'Männerspielplätze'. Translated that means 'men's playgrounds'

Still a bummer to see it getting ripped of so blatantly.

anth, that is awesome. Thanks!

The guy wrote right back to me, very apologetic. He grabbed the image from the internet and couldn't immediately see how to contact me. I think in his mind making an illustration out of the photograph made it a little different than just swiping it. Still, he owned up. He's going to send me a set of his books. He seems all right, honestly. He has a Reliant Scimitar as a weekend car. I'd never seen or heard of that.

Fatandre, the car is 1,090 kg with 48 kg of gas in it. With me in it and the aero stuff tacked on, the total goes up to just under 1,200 kg. Many 911s are made much lighter. But I have a full cage, bigger brakes and wheels, and a fair amount of reinforcements to stiffen the chassis. Lighter is faster, but it can reach a point of diminishing returns.

If you crash your Reliant Scimitar into a bog, and only one local tow truck driver named Artie can pull it out, does that make him King of England?

Unrelated to English royalty, I'm still working on the drag-reduction system for my wing. I'll be testing it for a second time later this week. But one thing I wanted to improve on was the warning light, which currently only lets me know when the Miata headlamp motors are moving the wing (with the same light whether it's upward or downward movement). I wanted the warning light to remain on when the wing was in the low-drag position in order to reduce the possiblity of driver confusion (since I discovered I was using the switch backward the very first time I tested it). My initial thought was to use a plunger switch -- but I was nervous about adding anything that might unintentionally get in the way of the thing moving in the event of a mounting bracket failure or something like that.

So I came up with the idea of using a magnetic non-contact switch (like they use in home security systems), and now I'm basically spinning a magnet around so that when wing is in the low-drag position, the magnet trips a switch which I wired into the same warning light circuit. So now the warning light is on both when the wing is moving, and also when it's at rest in the less safe (low drag) position.

Here's a video clip that might make all of that less confusing:

VIDEO: Light Test - YouTube

And here's a picture, which won't make much sense at all if you don't watch the video. ;)

Jack, if your not happy with your current "drs" here is another option. Over here on the right coast,in the northeast, the ISMA supers run pressurized air cylinders(ie:Bimba) to control the wings. By adjusting the air pressure you can control how quickly the wing drops to a low drag position. Not sure if this would be any lighter or better, but it is a very reliable setup. I found a link to some single car qualifying which has some good examples. https:/www.youtube.com/watch?v=_So0pTlrJ0Q/ You can see the wing drop at the exit of a corner and pop up at entry of the next corner. If you skip ahead to 12:20 in the video is a real good example. Anyway just another idea to think about(just what we all need!).

Germany's Auto Bild Television showed a short video about my car today. They're showing it again on Sunday. I'll be allowed to post the English-language version of it here on Monday.

This picture was taken by Justin Evidon during the filming of the clip. I don't think I've ever looked more German.

I might have been dozing off. :)

Since this has bumped to the next page, I'll include all four pictures from that day. The car would look prettier if I didn't have all the aero stuff bolted on -- but the real goal that day was to beat my previous best lap time, which I managed to do y 3/10 of a second, even with all the cameras pointing at me.

You kinda have a Liem Neeson thing going in that garage pic.

"I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for sticky tires, I can tell you I don't have them. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for drivers like you. If you let me pass on the left now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will lap you. Also, I have a hydraulic lift table hidden where you'd least expect it."

I guess you'll need to do some wide format prints for your shop Jack. The photos are oozing enough testosterone to bring Schwarzenegger out of retirement :) Shot one with you on the orange back drop is timeless. I think I missed something there, but what was the story behind the Auto Bild photo shoot?

congrats on the new record! Did the wing perform as well as you wished?
The pictures are awesome. You should print your lap-record on it with the date and frame it ;)

This is the English-language version of a 5-minute clip made by Auto Bild magazine in Germany. It's about my history with my 911, and also my ongoing obsession with making the car quicker at my home track of Willow Springs International Raceway.

The clip was made by Dani Heyne and Justin Evidon, and there was some behind-the-scenes drama right from the start. They'd asked to follow along on my early-2014 attempt at getting below a 1:27 lap for the first time -- and a surprise rainstorm threw a wrench into things on the drive up, since I'd removed my wipers that day to (ever-so-slightly) improve the car's aerodynamics. The rain hit hard in the Soledad Pass, and it was really only with the help of their camera car that I was able to get off the freeway at all. Fortunately, the rain didn't last long, and the clouds that came with it made for some really stunning photographs once we got to the track.

Great piece Jack. Do you have any pictures of the camera setup they used on the car for filming? Great shots.

Congrats on the new lap time!

Very nice enhancements lap time. On a smaller scale, try the same procedure on the circuit Most and the gradual improvement of the car and myself :) I got the first time 2:47 to 2:19, and there are plans further improvements. Big fan, very nice work on the car and the garage is really fabulous.

Awesome thread Mr. Olsen, I have seen many references to it on other threads, so I thought that I should see what all the hype was about - now I know.

I have only read a small fraction so far, but will steadily plug away at it on a daily basis - so please forgive me if I ask an occasional question relating to something that's been covered a couple of years ago.

Your utilization of a relatively small space is truly inspirational.
