Funny! I'm sure that's going to drive sales through the roof. :)

Here's an edit I had to do for something else, but it marks three small-house projects I've done that all stand the risk of falling on top of me at some point in the future. I'm sure most of you have seen all three, but...

I got volunteered to lead a woodworking project for a group in my son's preschool. What do you do with 4-year-olds who want to bang on nails? Well, my first thought was to just bring in some 2x4 scraps, nails and hammers. But then I also did some Googling and came up with this little dinosaur that can be made out of a 7" length of 2x4. I did the cutting in advance so they could assemble and then screw (or nail) the arms and legs onto one of these bad boys. I called it a Wood-o-saurus.

https://sphotos-a.**.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/537133_10200954641812608_661512297_n.jpg

It turned out to be a lot more popular than banging on nails. I had to make four more kits for the following day.

Photo linked above (looks like it's hosted on Facebook) no longer works. Do you still have a photo of this project? Original link was h t t p s:// sphotos-a.**.f b c d n.net/hphotos-ash3/537133_10200954641812608_661512297_n.jpg (added spaces to stop auto-linking by the message board software.

EDIT: Found the project a few posts down: http://www.finewoodworking.com/wood.../kids-woodworking-project-a-t-rex-figure.aspx

Yes, I slide quite a bit. Most of the time (in corners, at least) the car is experiencing some amount of understeer, oversteer, or a state where the direction the tires are pointed is not the same as where the car is pointed.

Probably less than usual in this footage, though, since I was going slower for shots where they were following me or the photographer was out there crouching down on the track.

If you aren't fighting for grip you aren't going fast enough! :) Really enjoy your video editing Jack, thanks for sharing your videos with us!

You may not still need it, but I found the picture too.

Jack,
I just noticed the Emeco chair with the desk....
Check this out.

We have a pair of them in the house. It was my ex-Navy father who explained where the design came from. I love the low weight and the design.

Hot off the presses. 911 & Porsche World is a British magazine devoted to -- you got it -- 911s and other Porsches. The writer Dan Trent interviewed me for it in December of 2018. Now it's coming out in the November 2019 issue. James Lipman shot the pictures for it, and I'm. going to speak personally when I say it was worth the wait. I can't show the whole article yet, but here's the opening spread:

And here's a photo I really like that didn't appear in the article, but Lipman let me see.

Excellent as always.

I have never built a car like yours, but had a few in print over the years, and it is a kick to see how others view and photograph your car.

I guess I will be looking out for that edition.

Jack, not being an auto sports guy, but one who can appreciate, but not always find "the racing line" (bicycling/cyclocross) I noticed that your line was significantly different than the rubber left on the track at Willow Springs... Is this cause your line is better through driving or because you have track tires and rubberier line is left by more street oriented tires (less traction leads to wider turns) ?

Jack,

I recently watched a great video all on Nardi Steering wheels and instantly noticed the colors of the equipment in their machine shop:

I JUST noticed in the short driving video that your neck is bare. Do you not wear a fire suit? If not, why not? Sorry to be the old man in the group offering unsolicited advice but you've got a beautiful family that needs you. Take care.

P.S. Still enjoying your old welder and bench top! Happiest of New Years to you too. Best, Dan

Dan in Pasadena, one older gentleman I know who races air cooled Porsches answered that exact question for me once. "In these cars engine fires are, luckily, behind you. If they aren't, pray." I found it worth a chuckle.

Hey Jack,

I got suckered into some clickbait for a nifty LED light fixture and found them on Amazon. Well, look what I found in the link (sorry for the pic size):

Here's the link:

Sorry if this has been brought to your attention already. I scanned back a few pages in your thread, but didn't see mention of it.

Happy new year!
Tommy

Jack, I'd like to know how you hung those lights on the backside of your garage door so they point down when the door is up. We know you're good, but that's just showing off.

Come on now PD you’re just causing trouble now. There is a flexible cord of course. Don’t they have those in Arizona? Is that the metric 360 degrees?

Interesting photoshop job at removing his custom fixtures. Anyway, the light on the left is hanging from an arm. The one on the right is behind the door.

I actually do have a light hanging from the back of my door that aims down when the door is up. But it’s not photo worthy.

Hey Jack, awesome thread! I’ve been looking through the posts to see if you mentioned what product you used for the decorative aluminum strip that you’ve glued under the cabinets, but I couldn’t find the answer anywhere.

Is it aluminum roofing flashing?

But if you crash and can't get out immediately?

I'd say a fire suit would be good investment.

I didn’t see the in car video of or image of Jack not wearing a suit, but I’d guess this event wasn’t designated as a “race”. I’d guess it was a track day event sanctioned by a club designated as “driver education” for insurance reasons. These events are usually called Track Days and are pretty heavily regulated based on the cars and driver experience (I'm sure you can Google it for more details). From my 35 years of experience in the racing industry, I’d say you should probably suit up before you drive to work before you do at track day in a controlled environment with emergency personnel standing by.

Hey, Dan. I'm still enjoying the 2000# of concrete I was able to mix with your machine! :)

Safety gear involves some compromise, no matter what. I wear my fire suit for test days and racing. I don't wear it for Driver Education days, where I'm the Chief Driving Instructor, although I can see the argument for it. I've got an extinguisher and a three-nozzle hard-plumbed Halon system in the car. I always wear a head and neck restraint. And the car has a full cage.

The LED fixture's photoshop skills are weird, but my own lights do hang from supports that come out from the side walls so the door can go up and down.

I got it from a metal supplier, so it's just 1/8" thick (maybe 12 gauge) aluminum stock, 3" wide. I probably bought it in 20' or 12' lengths. Aluminum is pricey enough; I think it would be prohibitive to buy this kind of stuff from a big box store.

Hmmmmm.......I never thought of that. I have an issue with light where my garage door is. I didn't put any light there due to them being blocked by the door.

I was considering using some of those LED panels mounted in the door.....but that would only work when my door is up and above the work area.

Your solution works with the door up or down.

I picked up some recessed LED lights....didn't read the Amazon page real well. I thought I bought 2 lights....I bought 2 boxes with 4 lights in each one.

Nice lights....4" dia...about 2" thick. I have 6 of them left...........

Hmmmmmmmm

6' aluminum straightedge rulers at HD (~$12) were cheaper than plain 1/8 x 2 x 8' aluminum flat bar. ($30) The backside is just plain anodized aluminum. If you can use 6' lengths, just install them with the ruler side in. 4 footers at HF are only $5, $4 with a coupon. Easy solution if you don't have a full-line metal supplier nearby.

That's a smart way to approach it.

I just checked, and my supplier (Bobco Metals in Los Angeles) has 12' lengths for $16.41 each. So my investment was probably around $47.

Jack: that is an awesome idea on the lighting and I might have to steel that idea. thank you

another reason i'm posting is to ask you if you've ever had to straighten out a bent shelf in one of your stronghold or lyon cabinets that are very stout.

reason i'm asking is i've had easily 2000 pounds of gym weights and/or vises on the 4 shelves in my Lyon cabinet that is 4 foot wide, 2 foot deep and 7 foot tall and I noticed that during the year while the cabinet was in storage one or maybe two of the shelves had started to fail. i think they might have had closer to 3000 pounds on them.

anyway once i pull out the bent/damaged shelf since they are more stout than most shelves did you ever have to bend any back in shape while you were cutting your old ones up to fit in your great garage?

any help bending big thick metal would be helpful and i've got more than a few big tools, but not all the skills.

thanks and keep up the great work!!

Hi. I just love the work you have done with your garage. Do you mind revealing the color code for your choice of green?
