That is usually the way it goes with really large trees like that sadly. Luckily you found it before it fell.

It's been awhile since I last posted. We hosted a wedding shower for my wife's sister at the end of April so I was wrapped up in the preparation of the house. All went well, even with my wife's mom being at our house. (She and my wife don't have a relationship)
I have continued to plug away as time permits and have a few photos to show progress.

I added a few more lights. There will be 2 fixtures above the workbench that are controlled by the main light switch. I have two more near the middle of the garage and two installed on the bottom of the rafters to provide angled lighting which will be on a second switch. All in all I should have 28 T-12 lamps on in the garage when needed. Luckily all were free from a friend who was remodeling his basement. There are two more I could use but don't want to lose access to the storage in the rafters.

This shows a change in the parts bins on the work bench. I added a shelf to get them off the bench surface but still have them available. I may clear out one more and put its contents into one of my harbor freight part bin trays to clear more clutter but am not yet sure. I also fabbed up a screwdriver rack from 3 x 3 x 1/8 angle and now have a drawer in my toolbox clear for other tools. I used a unibit and spent about an hour and a half to get it laid out to my liking. I have allen drivers on the back row left, torx on the right and my JIS impactas in the middle. The front row has my metric nut drivers on the left, regular and Phillips in the middle and SAE nut drivers on the right. There are a few miscellaneous drivers in the drawer but I may put them into the house box, or pass them along to a cousin.

I have also given some thought to the side wall and will adjust it again to try to improve it's utility. More details as it comes.
Two other projects that I'll hopefully get to soon are adding a subpanel in the garage and relocating the compressor to the front right corner, behind the man-door.

Thanks for stopping by,
Bob

That is a nice looking screwdriver rack, I've thought about something similar but you have done a great job with that one. I've sure you love having so much light in there, it really does make it a lot easier to work.

Thanks for the compliments. I searched for options to get the screwdrivers out of the toolbox but there wasn't anything that caught my eye and I don't have room for pegboard above the workbench, at least not enough room to make it worthwhile so I figured I would give this a shot. I have another 32" length of the angle and may make a smaller rack for my prybars as well.

Even with just the two lights there is a huge improvement in the lighting. The garage originally had 5 screw in bulbs and that was enough for general lighting in a "parking" garage, definitely inadequate for my use. I'm sure once I can get the other 4 wired in and repaint the walls there should be no lighting concerns in the future.

It's coming along. I believe biggest single thing you can do besides lights is paint. I do all my walls and shelving are white semi or high gloss. Of course it's alittle harder to keep clean but if use high gloss you can spray some degreaser and wipe it down. Maybe you can add lights in such a manor that you keep access bit can get more lights up? Maybe put a floor down in rafters so have storage plus ability to hang more lights?

Thanks Taumac. Although it's slower than I'd like, progress is there. The plus side of the slow progress is that the garage is still functional and my wife parks her suv in there every night. I agree on the semi- or gloss sheen on the paint. Not sure what the exact color will be. Still need to get a few more things done before I can start trying to make decisions.
Regarding the lights, if what is up now isn't enough, I can adjust things a little and squeeze a couple more in. The storage above doesn't have a full floor, just 4 wall ties with some perpendicular braces. As such, walking or crawling up there isn't something I would do and thus need several access points, or reduce what is up there.
Thanks for stopping in,
Bob

This weekend saw some more progress in the garage. The right wall, which is the house side, has become a dumping ground for us and we finally had a coming to Jesus meeting. This meeting involved my wife telling me that I needed to get things cleaned up so she could once again park in the garage. I avoided reminding her that all of the stuff on that wall was hers, as I enjoy not being dead, and she and I began work. After a few hours the side was clean and we had a full garbage can.

I was also able to get my side cleaned up and rearranged the left wall to improve use and accessibility.

I relocated the two wall cabinets to each end of the wall and got rid of the shelf/platform for the compressor. The middle shelf was reinstalled but I'm still not happy with that as a solution for the sprays and oils. Time to think on it a bit. I finally got the grinder workstation in place. Initially I was going to use another section of the bowling alley but realized it isn't necessary and could find a better use for it elsewhere. Instead, i used a few shelf brackets and dug out some 15/16" thick pallet planking and make it work. For added strength I scabbed a piece of osb beneath each tool as I bolted it down. I may add a shelf beneath for the hand grinders to keep everything localized. Still working things out in my head.

My work week starts tonight and I don't have off until Tuesday, so progress is doubtful until after then.

Enjoy the holiday weekend and stay safe.

Thanks,
Bob

Bob your screwdriver mount looks great, might steal that one. I've got them on pegboard currently but the pegboard holders are pretty ordinary so I think the custom bracket you made is the way to go.

Cheers GB.

Thanks Grumblebum. It's been a while since I've been on the site, we've had a busy but great summer and I had quite a few side jobs that I had agreed to do a while back and finally am finishing them. Once the last one is done I'll be taking a year off from side jobs. Too much to do with my wife and boys and I want to actually finish my own projects. I'll post up some pictures in the next post of a couple things I have done around the house.

Thanks,
Bob

Here's a few things I did this summer:

View media item 63861We wanted to replace the front door as it didn't fit with the feel of the house and found this one at the habitat restore for $5. After enough of a delay I sanded and refinished the interior and repainted the exterior. The hinge locations had to be tweaked and a deadbolt installed, but it fits the house now. Still have to install threshold weatherstripping.

View media item 63862I spent about 2 hours sorting and consolidating my hardware. Freed up two drawers and found several things I knew where there somewhere.

View media item 63863I helped my wife's aunt repaint her basement and took out a workbench/cabinet for her. It was a bunch of 1 x 8's that were in good shape. I planned to build a shelf for the paint cans, caulk, and supplies and was able to reuse the materials. Total cost $0. A win. After getting it put together I realized the shelves for the quart cans weren't in the right spot so I tweaked the design and got it set up this morning before work. In the pic, behind the shelf is 8 panels that I also salvaged from her basement and will use those to finish the garage walls.

View media item 63867Here it is. I do need to set it off the wall a small amount to allow the pegs to fully seat in the pegboard.

View media item 63864The other milestone I hit was getting to start my cycle for the first time in over a year. I spent about 4 hours over a few days getting things cleaned and prepped. Still have to sort a few things before it goes on the road, but I'm pleased with progress.

Thanks for stopping by,
Bob

Thanks 1/2 Cup. Another weekend and another curveball thrown by life. Our youngest, Henry, is nearly 3 years old and Friday night he decided to jump off furniture, which he's done before. The only problem this time is he landed wrong and fractured his tibia. A trip to urgent care and he has a splint but next week will see an orthopedic specialist about a cast. The timing is interesting because 8 weeks from yesterday is when his birthday party will be held. He may have the cast off by then, but we shall see.

My how the time flies! I wrapped up a project that I'm quite proud of. My dad's coffee shop is in a 1930's gas station and one of the panels in the fixed garage door opening has been rotting away. After getting pricing from custom garage door builders and millwork shops, we decided to try making a new panel on our own. All in we had about 10 hours of labor, not including painting.

After several years of good driving I got into a fender bender on the way home from work. Luckily no one was injured but the trusty Saturn is in sad shape.

View media item 64703
I was able to clean things up to make it driveable as I didn't have a second vehicle. There was only a little damage to the front corner of the frame. The rest was cosmetic.

View media item 64704
I talked with my grandfather about buying his car if he decided to get rid of it and as timing would be, he and my grandmother are downsizing things. I was able to make the deal and pick up this 13 year old car, with just over 70,000 on the clock! Definitely a nicer ride than the Saturn.

Even my oldest son is excited!

I carved out a couple hours of free time and got started on phase 2 of the electrical plan for the garage, roughed in the sub-panel. Need to get outlets located and tied in but it does look like progress to me.

View media item 64706
Lastly, I finally purchased my first drill press. It's a craftsman 103.0305. I believe it was made in 1942. The seller got it from his wife's grandfather's estate, so it's on its third owner. Although it's rough, it only needs a new quill return spring and some cleanup. I don't know yet if I'll go with a treadmill motor for slower speeds or just add a third pulley. Either way, the modifications will kick me into gear to finally get the lathe reassembled.

View media item 64707
That's about it for me. I need to get the Saturn up to snuff as my brother-in-law may be buying it, and then it's on to winterizing the mowers and getting the snow equipment dusted off.

Thanks for stopping by,
Bob

Bob, thank you for the update.

Top job on the door opening and proud of it you should be.

Accidents can and do happen from time to time unfortunately, glad to hear that no one was injured.. How timely is that, being able to purchase your grandfathers car...

That is one nice drill press...

Thanks 1/2 Cup. I got into a few accidents in my early years of driving but the past dozen or so have been quiet. The biggest bummer is that I already had a soft agreement to buy my new car, and pass along the Saturn to my BIL and now it will need some work. The new car is a 2003 Oldsmobile Aurora with the 4.0L northstar v8. It is a great riding car and a huge improvement over the Saturn as far as creature comforts go. It definitely makes the 40 mile (65 km) commute a little easier.

Sounds like you stepped it up a notch in car comfort, but got kicked in the teeth for MPG. Oh well all part of it I guess. Congrats on the drill press as well, it should be a fun new toy...I mean tool.
