Re: My "Shop"

Well, New Year, new avatar and trying out my welder with new shielding gas.
07c5b994ce601e663231040afae35cfa.jpg

I ran some .25 on a 75/25 mix to weld up some holes on my 6 drawer craftsman chest.
662a9ead4381a444f3890a3fadf6ee63.jpg

I come to realize that sheet metal work I really need to use a AD helmet. I love my gold 10# lens but don't work well for sheet metal work. First time running this machine in this setup and love it for sheet metal although I burn through about 500 psi testing it on bed frame steel seeing what it could do. I had mixed results. Gonna try some .30 wire to see get better results. Its funny when you been running flux all these years and switch how long it takes to dial machine in. In the end being a small tank think I might use this setup for sheet metal and important stuff and have it set up for flux most of the time.

Happy New Year, Gerard!

Glad to see you got the gas mix. I have the 140c welder. Might have to come by and have you teach me how it should work. Mine is still on the learning curve.

Great work on the drawer organization. I've started, but realize that first, I need to gather all my tools from inside and under the Bus before I create permanent storage space for them.

I would love to do my pliers like yours, but I need to move them to a deep drawer. But it might be worth it as I only have one HF chest right now. Decisions decisions!

Gerard

Great new avatar. Good work with your welder. I am working today on trying to find a place for all the Christmas "stuff". We have a big overhead cabinet in the utility room, but it is no longer big enough for everything. I guess I will have to resort to the attic space.
Hope your New Year works extremely well for you!!

Best Regards

Thanks Wingnut, Happy New Year to you also. I got tried of tools being everywhere do decided to put them ALL in one spot. I also had **** tools mixed in there so took the good extras and gave them to a friend and made myself a drawer for "make a tool" stuff. I love my twin HF 44s and for the money can't go wrong with another. That 26 top and bottom for same price as the 44 is nice option also.

You have a 140C. That's a better machine than I have. I really wanted the "C" but work I do didn't warrant the extra $300 so bucks. I just wanted a good, reliable welder that I could easily get parts for anywhere so went with the 140T. I'm still learning myself but between both of us I'm sure we can get yours dialed in. I would like to get together same time and shoot the ****. Hell, your right down the block (in Florida terms) so have to plan something to make it happen. I really want to get ppl of the FGJ together cause we live so damn close and its a shame we havnt all meet up yet to do something. That's something in 2015 that's gonna change.

You are a trend setter Gerard with the new Avitar, well done.

I have never used flux core, must try it some day.

You are right I does take a bit of dialling a welder when you change things like that..

Re: My "Shop"

After I got the HF boxes done I looked for ways to deal with some other tool boxes on the Craftsman wall. One on these boxes has all my welding stuff. This includes my MIG stuff, O/A torch, my Turbo torch, and propane torches. While this set up works great in a shop setting they don't lend itself to make these portable. Meaning if I need to take them I have to go in the drawer, make up a toolbox of parts needed for equipment.

I bought these cause I needed these pieces to be portable. So I needed to combine pieces to each piece and keep them together. Starting with my MIG I decided to do this.
0af5831f4a457eb5fd898eb94cd11d88.jpg

f09bb25bed224fafcf56420b2053ffe6.jpg

This includes
pliers,
needle nose pliers
tank wrench,
hose wrench
brass, flux nozzles
025, 030, 035 tips
Flux wire
Solid wire
Now all I need to grab is a welder, tank, helmet, and gloves and away I go. I didn't make provisions for any tools like clamps, grinders etc. I just needed all the parts for the MIG include with the MIG ready to go.

Thanks man, since the holidays are over really trying to balance garage and time with the wife. I'm trying to knock out some things before my Feb remodel. I figured some small projects few nights a week. Although, just started doing a layout and electrical on my inlaws garage down the block. Nothing crazy like my place but simple layout of some shelves and lighting.

Forgot to tell you, flux is tricky and MIG is a lot easier. Flux is like wire feed stick welding in some points. Flux is good of dirty metal and working outside. One great thing is penetration you can get with flux. Almost double of of MIG but tricky to making a pretty weld like MIG. I've used it for a while cause that's what I had to weld with. I finally got good welder and a tank. Ill use that flux still cause I only bought a small tank and don't wanna use it up too quickly and keep refilling it at $23.00 a pop.

The 5 Stitches Garage 20 x 22 in FL

Today, well should say tonight got some trail and error done on a new project. When my inlaws moved into their new place I saw something in the garage I fell in love with. I told them I wanted it bad and I get it If my father in law doesn't use it. Well, It only took 10hours into the New Year to get a new project for my garage. LOL

The cabinet is coolest thing I've seen and haven't seen nothing like it. It's 48in tall, 16 1/4in wide, and 4in depth. I already had place picked for it.
cb75de0bc190f8bae0cb0953d97cca93.jpg

I did run into issues cause of its size. First my shelf is too long to raise it.
bb40be7445b9746a49a6ce63058e71ac.jpg

But can't move it over cause it's on the edge.
adf2a30fc7f60a1dc8f665266c6c50c0.jpg

And third is I gonna use of half of the top drawer on my side cabinet.
8c9540cc27ab2c00c355bfcb30c105d7.jpg

I gonna keep it in this area but just gotta figure out a solution to make everything work out.

Cont of last post...

The other cabinet used will be used in future project soon but for a comparison here's both cabinets side by side

e4e2dc441875d364e9bcbb822e202fcc.jpg

The newer cabinet is more than double in size and more usable cause shelves can be adjusted every 5 inches. It's still the planning and tweaking stage but plans are strip the rolled on paint job.
bcfb05e57b815d7919b97f788ddb5918.jpg

Hammer out the small dents and respray it a color yet to be determined. Well you all know it's gonna be red, white or silver. LOL

Very cool cabinet. The kind of thing I'm always on the lookout for as well. Just a couple thought starters on positioning it. One would be the obvious localized cut out of the upper shelf to allow you to raise the cabinet and swing its door open. The other thought is a 1" moulding strip attached to that corner wall from floor to ceiling so it looks like a finished edge. Then the cabinet could be moved outward that 1" to the new corner edge and clear the upper shelf and raise it to a height that lets your side cab drawer open.

Happy new year Gerard. It's a little late wishing this, but we have been on the road.
Garage and the rearranging of things is looking good!

We spent new years and several days in Hernando, at the wife's sister's house, could've jumped on the boulevard ( SR 41 ) and headed south to visit?

Thank you and thanks for the ideas. I think what I'm going to do is similar to your idea with the molding. I think I'm going to attach a 2 x 4 to the corner floor to ceiling and that will move the cabinet out then moving it up. That will also give me something to screw the cabinet to the wall since there isn't much structure there in that corner. I missed the corner stud putting it on the edge. Im not too concerned with using that top drawer of the side cabinet cause I'll just put something I don't use too often in there. I'm more interested in getting the top of the cabinet level with the shelf. I really don't want to cut that top shelf because in five years that cabin might or might not be there but this shelf will definitely be there. Thanks for ideas.

Happy new year to you and thank you for your comments. Where about in Hernando? I know area well. Sure you could've stop by and visit. Next time you're in the area just send me a PM and we'll get together and have a few. It would be interesting for someone to see the garage in person versus on a website. You truly don't get the full effect unless you do see it in person. There is only one GJ member that has seen it in person and I've know him going on 30yrs now.

The 2x4 will definitely work and give you that needed strength to anchor to. Now if it's not too late, don't just nail up a plain 2x4. But rather on the corner of it that will face your entry doorway, put some nicer finished edge on it. Either a simple bevel or router edge. Why? Because you can, because you have tools, because it will make the project longer and give us all more to look at :D. Because it's your garage and you have the power to make it look good and function. Just funning a bit but what ever, show us some finished pics.

Got some fine tuning to do like once he decides if height is right I add back splash and electrical. For now its just waiting for feedback to make the final adjustments.

1st off...great garage as everyone else has said! Lots of great ideas!

I was trying to read through the thread for more on your screen. I saw a little about you using the privacy screen but didnt see anything about how its mounted. Do you have 2 seperate garage door tracks? If you posted it already let me know and Ill go back to reread. If not do you mind elaborating how you made it? Id love to build that for my house.
Thanks again, great to see a normal size garage on here!

Thank you so much for the compliments. I read your profile and honestly its gonna be hard to come by those screens in your area. There's another member in GA that had to have them shipped to him. They are very common here if Fl and really a must. All the screen info should be on first 2 pages of thread. They go in front of the roll door and are in a sliding track. Here are some pics by its dark outside but manage some.

I didn't make them but they where custom made by a aluminum company. I ordered my with privacy screen which makes in difficult to see in but you can see out but you could have them ordered with basic screen. They cost me at time $650 which seems like a lot but once you have them you'll never know how you lived without them. It turns your garage into a under roof screened room. I would go online and look for garage screen doors and see what's available in your area. Good luck.

Sir, my humble hat is off to you!! WOW, a table saw, miter saw, circular saws and lumber!! You, sir are a carpenter of the first order. To top it off, your an outside builder which I highly subscribe to being myself.
The desk and lamp system is excellent!! Kudos and I am quite impressed.

I register one tiny complaint however---YOU are working out side and I am not.
and YOU are wearing shorts and I am freezing up here!! Your quite lucky on that.

GREAT JOB and I am again---impressed!!!

Fantastic work Gerard.[emoji106]

What sort of splash back do you envisage??

Regards
Thanks 1/2 cup. My plan is once the height of work area is finalized. I plan to place studs from the top shelf to the lower work area. Then ill some some 3/4 ply as the back splash. The studding will one hold the heavy plywood and second, be able to screw in shelf brackets like ones I use in my place so that I can hold ANYTHING I want on the back splash. I will also anchor whole bench to the concrete wall behind it. That electrical will probably be mounted in space between bench and fridge. I would normally paint bench white but my FIL has his things in natural wood. My FIL has macular degeneration so I thought a white bright bench would help him see but he also said too bright also causes glare. Its a trail and error thing.

Thank you Herb. LOL, that's my son in the pic but I also had shorts on and was sweating good today working in the sun. I used my son and his friend that was visiting to move that bench. My father was shot after working on other stuff at inlaws and mine is sore now too.

I told you many many times to make a road trip to FL to escape the cold. I got cold Killians waiting?[emoji1]

Great job on the bench for the FIL. I'm sure he will get lots of good use. I was going to suggest a red and gray paint scheme until I read your comment about his preferences. Oh well. Maybe some bright matte finish white up under the top where the light mounts and reflects and then some stain and clear finish on the visible parts if he likes the wood look.

He usually keeps stuff bare wood. I didn't finish the backsplash yet cause making sure desk was at right height. Since he has macular I had tons of thoughts on color and lighting to help. He has his own methods he found to see better. I don't argue with him. He's liking it but few changes I would like to make before its done.

Trust me I would love to build him a version of the 5 Stitches with all of my principals. Its real easy to build for yourself but hard to build for others.

The new garage door looks neat!! Looks like a really well made one. I will eventually be doing the same here, except I am thinking of an 18' one instead of the two 8' ones I now have. I am thinking put the car in the middle and have more wall and shop space on BOTH sides. My front framing will allow me to do that with little cost for changes.
Thanks for posting the new door!! Looks great on your place.

Thank you Herb

Nice door! Are you planning to add insulation?

Thanks Bob, I didn't feel the need to insulate the door or buy a insulated one. Now, if I lived up north and worked out there during the winter need I would see a purpose in the added expense. My old door was 30+ years old and springs where worn and door cracked in middle on 3 of 4 panels causing it to dip in the middle while up. I welded some of it up for added time but was afraid of in falling on the cars or worst a person.
