The 5 Stitches Garage 20 x 22 in FL

Maybe my eyes are deceiving me Gerard, but the hammer that you got appears to have a rock mounted betwixt it's halves.... was it previous owned by a cave-man? :lol_hitti

Great score on all you purchases.

Actually it's rawhide. It's the stuff dogs chews on.

My understanding is machinist used them to adjust stuff without damaging it at all.

Re: My "Shop"

THE CRAZY G IS AT IT AGAIN......
After getting the 526 machinist yesterday I came up with a pretty cool idea. The Kennedy I found tossed out and this new one I really don't have any feeling for being they hold no sentimental valve like my others. That being said I thought of this idea.
Heres the subjects next to each other.
bbb9d924f6b45cc68027c756f655c8e8.jpg

My thought was to switch the drawers out to help my OCD with different drawers.
7af431c4dff6ae245fbff6b0a478112f.jpg

The good thing about all my machinist chest is they are all made the same. If you look at this side there are 5 slides.
2686d6f6cc7db032ee116182c91aa63d.jpg

And 3 one other side
2baf22832aea5a13e41848955d20ed63.jpg

Now the other side has 4
7bd610dffe6901c539c2266ae841adfa.jpg

And 2
c3de15f0401c104714591a0663ae84b4.jpg

This means that a bigger drawer takes up space of 2 smaller drawers and in theory I should be able to just remove the box glides from the Kennedy and place it in craftsman. The hole is already there to mark location. In the end I will paint Kennedy to match others on shelf and the Craftsman gets stripped and a new paint job. Can anyone guess the paint job?

Well here's my direction I'm going to make a MINI version of this.
5e17ab9d3a3c0936ad2796bf041aaec4.jpg

Yep a mini 10 drawer. Ok it a 9 drawer but I think it would look awesome.

After a few hours I got the you can see changes here better.

I also was able to take part front panel and bang out big dip in whole panel and bang out dent in bottom so the whole panel can fit cause it didn't when I got it.
443ea624f1bce7315649ab8704184e25.jpg

I also sanded some of the outside. This thing has seen some rough years. All the extra paint jobs this like has gotta actually might help me cause it will act like a body filler lol. This thing was paint it's originally hammertone, then gold, then red and finally painted by Stevie Wonder with a paint brush blue.

I need to get a new base pad for my RO sander but for one day I can't complain.

Re: My "Shop"

My OCD thinks your OCD is right Gerard - I do prefer the symmetry.

And as for your question...

...Hmmmm, let me think. :dunno:

...a splash of red maybe?

LOL, we think a lot alike. I have to have some symmetry and flow in this place. Actually, the colors will be red drawers and silver box exactly like my 10 drawer. It will be just a smaller version

Ha, I don't know if it's OCD or just good eyes but the change will look good and when painted will be like new again. Good idea.

IIRC theses would have been all sliver or gray so I decided that the Kennedy 520 will be painted all silver and the Craftsman will have red drawers and silver box since I'm making it a home on the Wall of Craftsman somewhere near its big brother. Most of my Craftsman are original so I really don't want to modify them but have a few that I don't mind changing like the Kennedy, big blue one, and my 7 drawer are up for grabs.

What you need is more toolboxes to work on. I know who will trade you some for your block grinder. LOL.

I know that list is pretty long and I can guess who is on top of the list. Actually I found a craigslist ad with the box I've been looking for but I have no more room. This small machinist is going to work out great. I have a spot all picked out for it

Re: My "Shop"

Well passed few days been doing some thinking..... ( YES There was tons of smoke pouring out) about future projects in the works, stuff I have, and how is ALL fits together in my head. I decided if I'm going to have to build a new bench for the sink area I might as well build a new bench for my Craftsman wall.

Here's the new sub structure of the bench.
c959aa72beb0839d6eed5e4d53cc0e1a.jpg

It's 2x8 like old but build with wood it right orientation for highest strength vs other. I'm leaving a edge on front for future project in the works. LOL you see in do time.
01d78641ddadfdb0526d19a1a527f371.jpg

I left is area open for now
a61d3e19590428a6681a8a0f0a783c31.jpg

I can put stack of tool boxes or add bench extension I future but that really won't effect the main 8 ft of bench.
I still have to work with the height.

019f53c3c536c33d1395278c9d7efe92.jpg

56108cac8a0e5a875d96ca0e9a70fc2f.jpg

This will be tallest box on this wall and want the ability to move it anywhere on this wall so I'll lower bench until I can roll it out without it rubbing.

Well I'm doing alittle recycling 5 Stitches style.
0f19e0e00ebe8a4b7675cd2a172e8993.jpg

The old bench is going to become part of new sink bench. This will work great cause I can have legs here and have 8 studs to attach any supports too.
Well maybe I'll get more done tomorrow.

Re: The 5 Stitches Garage 20 x 22 in FL

You obviously have waaaaay too much time on your hands Gerard.

I'm sure that it will be excellent.

If that was the case I think I would have finished already.... Wait a minute it is me we are talking about. LOL Actually, that original floating bench was made as a shelf for LIGHT duty and heavy work done on the tables. That was years years ago. That has all changed and now with 2 vises and a drill press theres WAY too much weight for that design. Sure I could just add legs but that would not allow me to roll the boxes out. I was using the vise other day bench was moving a lot. I spend the day trying to figure out how to add support and keep the "floating" design but there wasn't a way. So I decided to build a better work bench and retire that bench to the sink since both are 8ft. It's all in a master plan I have in my head and it will all come together soon I hope LOL

I gonna to raise or lower shelves to have them line up across the back wall Every top shelf on every wall will be 17 in off ceiling. Cabinets that are on shelf will line up with machinist shelf and benches will all be same height. That's gonna be tons of work. DAMN OCD lol

I manage to get the countertop mocked in place.

It's pretty high up there with being 41 1/2 inches off the ground. I got sink hooked back up and realize it's gonna been just right. I'm 5.8 and when using it I rest my elbows right on sink.
I also had to relocate the GFCI outlet higher since the counter covered it
92f14daae45f9aa3faa11df9175c1e7c.jpg

Here's a picture of benches all lined up and better shows how each side of the garage is off.
65c024ec378684741968d0971d584d81.jpg

My previous set up had these areas separate and dividing the garage in 2 and now working to make the back wall all one.

Looking good. That's gonna be a nice long work top area with a sink very handy at the one end. Looks like a big improvement to your layout and very usable.

Thank you. It's surly getting there. Place is torn up right now. I'm in middle of revising 2 benches trying to finalize the overall layout of garage. I knew this would effect garage but didn't think this much. It's slow progress but it's foward progress.

Every one job done, or one solution found, creates ten more "adjustments". Some of the adjustments were not really wanted but required. Helps to take a deep breath, have a beer, sit down, or just quit for the day. problem is we can't quit thinking about it.

Happily, it all works out though!!!

I think 42" is a good height for a workbench. No need to be bending over all the time. Most things I work on up there are small items anyway and its great to get a good close look at them. The big/bulky stuff gets worked on right on the floor usually.

I do have to agree. My HF bench is nice being 42 and and wanted to continue that look across the wall. My craftsman bench is at 36 but I like working on a bench 30 with a vise.

Re: My "Shop"

This weekend I did a lot of work with seems like little to show. First off I did get bench height just right to fit boxes under and refit the drill press even now that the bench is now 2 ins higher. That might not seem like much but if you remember how much trouble I had last time.
f0b1923746d5e8e381d19fe1527129ed.jpg

I have no idea how it happen but shelf above bench was off
0d4629844068eb26bdff8f2ae0899b2b.jpg

I got so frustrated with everything that I took bench apart and shelf. I leveled the bench and middle shelf. Top one on right side needs to be dropped on right side alittle
017c7f3fe792d4c1e0458dcaf8f16949.jpg

I FINALIZE the placement of all tool boxes. The 9 drawe bottom will be a stack with the 6 as inter and 10 drawer will be top. That means I will lose the 26 in of shelf above the stack but for me to rearrange everything all only lose that I be fine with that.
The end space by door is for 1 of the 3 future projects.
Now here want I did on sink wall.
1db9de34d467095fe278737f59c3b6e6.jpg

I decided to use the 7 drawer here plus decided to have a welding cart. I admit I not a fan of a purpose built cart for my welder. I put my homemade cart back in active duty and here's my mock up of my cart.
3af26266222b7cd6512890fddfee44a2.jpg

58792a6bf0ce1f65c19a4470216c8848.jpg

It's just a trail and see how I will make permanent one.
cdc6e744de83637d1bc8446db2bde375.jpg

It fits pretty good, and now I know what changes that need to be made. The cart will be project 2 of 3 and project 3 is going in there too.

It took me sitting there looking and staring for hours to figure it all out. This plan allows me to build all my future project I really need and keep all my current boxes. Now with the plan in place now it just to find the time to do all this.

Once again you've made all the puzzle pieces fit properly. But where is the extra space for that next tool box? You know, the one that will show up in CL next week and tempt you to buy it? Just when I think I'm done it always happens to me!
Good work all!

Thanks guys. Funny you both said that cause I have a buddy that almost got me the 4th matching box I wanted this pass weekend. Unfortunately, it was sold few hours earlier. I know I will find something soon because it never fails that I find something within a month of rearranging the garage.

I wasn't looking for the old 9 drawer but it was a cool old piece I rearrange things alittle and planned things out and he finds the 3 drawer 2 weeks after. It was 6 hour round trip for CL ad and I wasn't gonna drive that far for it. He happen to be going down there this past weekend for work so he swung in.

If the trend continues I believe by 1st of May I should find it. Then the 7 drawer will just have to find a new home. I would like find a GJ member local that is willing to do straight up swap. I'll swap the my 7 drawer for the 3 drawer I want. Time to get on the FGJ and get the word out.

I took a big swing at the sink wall the past few days. I took rest of drywall off the bottom of the wall.
4e4df7e53e82c28393546031eeba68fc.jpg

I put new drywall
cb619a96d4a2d48e714555ee05c5da1d.jpg

The center I still have to finish. The center will have removable piece to access the plumbing for future work I plan.
I stud the outer wall. I used 3in deck screws every 16in from floor to ceiling
f4e3ecc3972490bf904df140f139cd83.jpg

I did it everywhere but here cause of dryer vent.
57f814848ed3f84080d088c20a61a717.jpg

I was able to keep it out of inner house as much as possible and also keep same exit as I had before.

Now the shelf. 1 in under 11 ft and 2ft deep with 22.5 of useable depth.
1c0f26eb254295aab8f70099df5d21cf.jpg

The shelf up. I ran issue some issues.
Walls off cause this which I'll fill in

Not planning this but worked out. The new old shelf.
eb48dfb21f80a7432462ef6603d4a58e.jpg

It almost looked I knew what I was doing lol
It was a balance on height cause of the attic door. So I worked off the HF top shelf height.
2ffc8900d0f2166fa0d451791fc839d4.jpg

I also did electrical moved the GFCI also added a outlet to it plus a outlet to the fridge.

11ca8299624ede6dfc8b8bf992df8cd4.jpg

Also moving the WH from above the fridge to here.
3420f1197e85a922697941a159f6b8ac.jpg

Plus added a stop to fridge so I won't push back to far and crush dryer pipe.

Plus remove the wood the held up the WH
95d8e4867aea7597c3bc7b07a08233cc.jpg

After putting up shelf I double stack boxes and gain this much space.

After putting every back together this it how it stands.

I just have to move the machinist shelf down alittle but all the shelves all line up from left to right.

Looks great! I was tempted but was not going to say anything about the pink cabinets. Thanks to Herb for breaking that ice. Maybe get 2 quarts of red from Herb and then you can paint the fridge to match your theme. :)
