Great idea and worked out to completion of the mounting plates for vises, grinders, etc. You came up with a really good idea there. It makes your bench so much more versatile. And when a project is done, every tool can be stored away to offer a full length cleaned bench.
Very cool!

Thanks man, I was doing work over the weekend and had nothing mounted. I can tell you it made a world of difference. I didn't have to roll a cabinet out, set up a table, or anything. I actually worked on the work bench. Hey that's a novel idea. LOL. It also helped I changed other things to the bench. I havn't posted that stuff yet but I will sometime soon.

Might have to "borrow" the mount idea from you taumac :) for my one and only no name vise. I've not really been wanting to drill holes and permanently mount things to my mobile bench, but this way I can just have one set of holes to fit the template.

Thanks for sharing. Grumblebum.

I like the base idea and have considered something like that in the past, now that I have so many vises and grinders along with my chop saws I think I'll have to make this happen. Thanks for showing how functional it can be. I saw you drilled holes along the front of the bench, but did you also drill a series for the back of the boards or just a couple to mount the one you've already made?

Re: My "Shop"

Yesterday I was finally able to pick up final piece for my Craftsman bench and had good visit with a fellow GJ member.

She is just what I needed to fit in the space I needed.

And now my OCD is in check cause it has a uniform look.

I couldn't be happier now that I got it home and bench is looking how I envisioned it.

Wow Still reading through this thread. I would have to agree with you. OCD. But it amazes me how perfect things look. Like this one ,where all the drawers are in line. You are a perfectionist for sure.

Thank you, I havnt done anything as of yet with others I made I have some plywood left over and thinking of just making new plates for everything from grinders to saws. The big vises I thought needed 4 holes. Anything else I would have C clamped down so thinking those holes on lip should work out.

Although I like your idea of being able to bolt your vises or grinders anywhere on your bench, I can't bring myself to drill all those holes. Maybe I have a lot more room than you and I can spread out my things. But what an awesome idea. You truly have thought about a lot of solutions to a problem of having limited space.

Thank you for the compliments. I'll be honest in saying many people aren't going to go to the lengths I've gone in my garage. I know many close friends that aren't gonna fold up a lawn mower, go into a attic for a ladder, or move a water heater. One thing I've tried to show with my thread is mostly nothing is impossible if you want it bad enough. My neighbors, family and friends think I'm crazy cause I'm always out in garage thinking, planning and working on something.

Re: My "Shop"

Well, I was gonna post something but that project went all hell. Oh well the good, bad and the ugly right. Ok got home today from work and decided to fix a problem I cause the other day. I screwed up up welding cart trying to cut corners and didn't work. Mainly this.
fe55ff184543da20dc1a32f0e1403932.jpg
I thought I would welding a nut in a pipe and that would be the corner. Wrong didn't work so than I used thick washers.
59dcef153478311c79eb5a2235558d23.jpg
And wheels
9ffd07a43eceb80297553775635db854.jpg
Ok great fix right? Well somewhat. All the weight was on the washer and busted the tack welds. Plus had to use those wheels on other project. So ok come home and I'm gonna finish welding washers and go with different caster. Well ran out of flux core, switched to solid but only had .25. This isn't going good. Finish welding cart, grind all the welds and this is bottom.
b4c9b275b8d261a7b4956a1ca527c1bb.jpg
Ok cart welded, check.
Welds dressed and looking good from across the room, check. The wheels I choose before where threaded and was thinking of going with same 2in casters I been using for years. Nope I decided to change casters to 3in Craftsmans thinking it would be better. Ok I tack weld them on and F@CKER doesn't fit under bench now by what a 1/8 of a inch WTF You got to be kidding me. . [emoji482][emoji482][emoji482][emoji482][emoji482][emoji482][emoji482][emoji482][emoji482][emoji482] calling it a night now.

I guess I'll be cutting welds and drilling holes though bed frame all tomorrow night to mount these.

Well could be worse... I havnt cut myself tonight. YET LOL

I've decided one thing taumac, I'm a fan of your thread. I'll be sticking around. Hope you and the other guys can put up with me.

The latest project. Well Rome wasn't built in a day. You'll get it the way it needs to be. I'm sure of that.

I would look at it this way, If that is the worst thing that has happened today it has been a good day.

You will get there..

Thanks, I was just getting frustrated. It could have been worse. I also like posting my failures cause shows others that things always don't come out right and don't go as smooth as I would like it. LOL

Catching up on your thread today. Looks like you have a lot going on with your fabrication of the cart. Looks like it will be a great help in your shop. You are going to be happy with the new Craftsman lower box. It looks to be in great shape!

Welcome back sir. Hope you have good time at the cabin fishing.? The cart is going to be nice. I never had space to have a welder on a cart where I can just pull it out, plug it in, and go to work. That bottom craftsman is in great shape and going work out great. I'm going to reorganize the boxes on that wall at some point.

When I changed to an auto darkening helmet it was such a big improvement I wondered why I waited so long. Start watching for a sale!

x2. What a difference. I bought a $49.95 one from HF. So far so good. It seems to be working well in every way. Guess I should post this on the HF pass/ fail thread. Sorry Gerard.

X3 if you're not using auto darkening you're missing out. I started with the HF AD the saved for a higher grade. Very happy.

Re: The 5 Stitches Garage 20 x 22 in FL

I wanted to try welding so I bought the Harbor Freight $89 110v wire welder and their $49 auto darkening helmet. It worked and I was hooked on welding (really regret waiting until I turned 65 to start). I don't get paid to work anymore and couldn't justify spending thousands on a welder but I upgraded to a $500 Eastwood 175 (220v) MIG welder with shielding gas and the HF helmet still worked fine. When Eastwood put their DC TIG welder on sale for $500 I decided to give TIG welding a try. The first time I used the TIG I had a problem. My left eye is hypersensitive to light (pupil is always dilated just like when you get the drops for an eye exam). The TIG arc was so much brighter I was blinded for a couple of minutes.

I prefer vision to blindness so I looked for a better helmet. I also prefer retirement to work so I wasn't willing to get a job to pay for the helmet. Jackson Safety (division of Kimberly Clark) sells auto darkening helmets designed for TIG welding. The one I bought is the Jackson Safety Wh40 SmarTIGer, model 37188. I paid $119 in March 2014 and there's one on eBay today for $125:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jackson-Saf...With-Balder-/281799229984?hash=item419c8b0220

I no longer have white-out blindness when I weld and have had zero problems with the helmet. I still use the HF helmet for MIG when it's just a quickie project.

I actually should say I did have a HF AD helmet when I first started welding. It worked well until one day it just stopped working. I turned it into my O/A helmet with #5 shade in it. It sure beats the goggles. I wasn't sure what I wanted helmet to buy at the time so friend gave me a Lincoln helmet with a AD 10 shade in it. It's the Jackson helmet with stars and strips theme. It worked then died so got frustrated and went and got a Hobart #10 gold lens. The gold lens has great clarity and not green tint of the AD. I can see well with it but it's a ***** not having the AD feature at times.

I love welding. Having a welder around is like a air compressor. You never realize how much you use it until you don't have one. My little Lincoln 140 had worked out great so far. I prefer the 110v over the 220v for shear portability and I can use it anywhere. I have a 75/25 small mix tank. It's small so I reserve that for good work electing to use flux and many projects. The 110v with .35 flux more than handles anything I'm doing around here. I would like to TIG weld. I got small O/A setup I bought to brazing and other things. I played around with it and really like the control. They say TIG and O/A are similar in its same hand and torch movement. I can't justify buying a TIG but at that price I might just have to take second look. I like Jackson helmets and have 2 already. I'll look into that helmet cause it's nice to have a personal experience good or bad before I just buy.

HOLY ****, that's my first post of my original garage thread called "My Shop" before the name change to the 5 Stitches Garage. I think I was a good 4 to 5 years into my build. I wish I took pictures cause a lot happen from these pics to now. I wished everyone could have seen from start. Thanks for stopping in and thanks for the compliments.

Just fantastic!! Your garage looks really great in every way from the arrangements to the storages to the tool placements and it really shows you have had a plan it has worked so very well. I am totally impressed with your place and it is a delight to see.
I know you have worked so hard to bring it to where you want it to be. I am sure your going to be very pleased with all the hard work you have done. I am also sure that Mr George Killian will give his full approval of it as well. Sit back, enjoy your excellent work, and be very aware that your place is excellent in every way!! BTW: I am refering not only to the above posted photos from the past, but for where you have gotten things now! It looks then AND now totally comfortable and efficient.

My very best wishes to you!!

LOL, I was going to weld but I have a unfortunate accident in garage

My CO 2 tank was on bench and welder was on the ground. My father and I where looking at something on a cart and somehow tank fell off the bench on ground and smashed my gauges. We don't know how it happen but it happen. I'm not happy but cut off the surround and see how bad the are. The reg still works but gauges are shot. I went looking for new ones yesterday and today. The both places I went to had gauges but not right size into my reg so I'll get some online. In mean time I picked up some .35 innershield so I can weld until I get new gauges. In end could have been worse if fell on valve and someone got hurt. I got welder back on cart and tanks are secure.

Thank you Herb. I'm always humbled by the beautiful things you say. I'm so glad that the Garage Journal has allowed me to meet people great people like yourself and others I've have meet along the way. I consider all the people that have that have taken the time to follow me and comment not just people on the internet but all friends. You all have said such nice things about what I've done and continue to in my garage that it's a inspiration to go out and try new ideas and experiment more.

OOPS don't you hate that Gerard.

I REALLY do... I got really pissed at the time. I calmed down and glad it's just gauges verses a whole new regulator. I'm really take good care of my welding stuff. I keep welder covered and handle it with extra care. I do the same with my O/A. I got my turbo torch from my father and first hour I had it I opened the side door of my truck, it fell and damaged a gauge. It still worked but replaced it. That damn turbo torch fallen few times. I actually asked my father " how many times did you tip the tank over" he said none. I dont know how he didn't over the 20 plus years he used it cause it's top heavy and doesn't have a carrier.

Taumac,
first off, thanks for stopping in on my post and providing some advice. I thought i should check out your thread, as it's one that's been mentioned in various other threads. After 3 nights I'm caught up. The work you've done has been amazing. The initial photos from the "my shop" thread showed a garage I would be proud to work in. The transformation through all 66 pages is beyond impressive. The biggest take away from the thread is that I shouldn't be afraid to dive in and rebuild an entire bench just so I can gain an inch of clearance to make a new box fit.
although it seems as though you're at a good place now with the layout, I'm subscribing to follow along. Thanks for allowing us to step inside your garage and life.
