Re: My "Shop"

I got a question for all you GJ guys out there. At what point have you become educated enough in the GJ world to spot something from 75 to 100 yards away and know with 95% probability of exactly what it is?

Hey Shorty, you should take a ride with me down to CB place this weekend. You can check out the Listas and the calendar. NO DROOLING on either. LOL

Guess I'll wait before hanging my chain hoist, Shorty may try to divert me with Ms March and load my Listas up.

Ok while you all are busy loading all the craftsman boxes, I'll just outside hanging out by those ugly tool cabinets looking at the calendar.

I see nothing, I hear nothing, I know nothing!

It depends on the item in question (and my eyesight isn't getting any better) but since I've been serious about reading GJ for the last 2-3 years I can definitely spot certain vintage items from a distance. Now a football field distance is not too typical but certainly from the edge of the street at an outside yard sale for example. I could tell if tool boxes, vises, and larger tool items were potential good USA made of cheap imports.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking also. I went to this house gate locked so honked horn. From the gate near street I see this.

Ok got IPhone 6 on full zoom.

I could tell it's a Waterloo made otter box with pull handles. It was older and probably in years of my craftsman just different drawers.

Re: My "Shop"

Preparing for the boxes to come tomorrow I got one of the 2 chest brackets done. I cleaned up the corner.

Here's the bracket.

91482e8f690844142e8fc02cfc078afa.jpg

Now this is new design I made up from the last 2 attempts. Using scrap steel from the one welding carts I made along with some other pieces. I must have welded and cut this stuff several times over. First one in the corner cause didn't come out as well as I wanted it to. Some day things go your way and others they don't. It is what it is. Oh and Grum isn't seeing my welds either. They where pretty awful looking. Moving forward I got bracket attached two 2 x 4 furring strips.
01df11f68fdc9f2a1bd656f574ea674b.jpg

I put the chest up there after shimming the bracket
668da9f7055c47ee2f8678b1d4a2ab9f.jpg

And this is what it will look like with bottom roller and chest.
844757793cbdb8ef448b3991bfd1e40e.jpg

I made it so it's only a 1/8 off the bottom roller so I can roll it out and have most excess I can to the top compartment
fef9591e971cedf556b4ba7110d7e6f7.jpg

Now when I get home from CB tomorrow all I have to do is change out the bottom casters on the roller to the smaller ones that I use and put the chest in place.

Thanks Craptain. In about 2 months I got 4 red and gray boxes and finally able to finish this idea I had in head for some time. Actually, one I traded with you start quest for another tall one and idea to bookend end bench with 2 craftsman stacks.

Gerard

You must have had your Binos in the truck to have seen that much detail on that box at the place with the locked gate. People who lock a gate kind of scare me, and that place would be no exception. Maybe that box is what they put their coleman stove on when they "cook" back there?
Your Cman box stacking frames worked out really well!! Great job.

Best Regards
Herb

Thanks Herb, in my defense your eyesight is much better than what the camera picks up. I'm not sure why people locked gates I think it's more of a deterrent more then a security thing.

Gerard the welds are fine - more importantly we haven't seen miss April from that calendar yet :pimpflash:

Well I'm glad I got the blessing that my welds are OK by the welder in training. Surly the few weeks of training you've gotten is a lot more than I've ever had. I'm in route to see Miss April right now. LOL

Hope he's bringing miss April with him, my back is sore from lifting all my new stuff yesterday.:D

Guys, don't tell him, I told him the calender was on his box, just to get him down here, it worked.

Call us, only 15-20 mins. Away.

I tested Taumacs claimed ability to identify a tool from 100 yds.

He said he saw it at the gate.

( In a carnival showmanship voice) I stand before you today to bring you a project that not many thought would ever become a reality. Are you sure it's finished? There is still some space. Not much but I bet you could get another carry box or two in there. :lol_hitti

Re: My "Shop"

Well picked up 3 more boxes this weekend. The first is this stack.
27195cf94e6461ef52532b693bd4987b.jpg

Top chest is from 05/70

Bottom roller is from 10/67

The other box I got is 6 drawer chest.
1eed952bd523e262c7d7c23992dd579d.jpg

This chest turns out to be oldest gray/red I have dating from 2/64.

I also learned that the 2 carry boxes also have dates in the top compartment also.
b0a1cdb8deed0588c42c1a7f69adb5b8.jpg
The left one is 11/69 and the right is 2/73. This means my oldest box is 2/64 and newest is 10/75.

Now I not sure sure the faith of the 1964 6 drawer chest right now. I couldn't pass it up for the price but thinking it will sure come in handy to store stuff from the other boxes once I start restoring and painting them. I do have plans for 1970 6 drawer chest which is IMO pretty awesome.

Re: My "Shop"

I forgot to add the story of the Craftsman stack I got. I was concerned about rust so CB sent pictures.

6f362ac9d05335926f1a86ed46a5f044.jpg

At this point I'm worried and asking how bad so he sent me more.

25d975bae24c61f99c8bcf777a33fd7c.jpg

I'm REALLY worried at this point. He ensures me it's solid and will sandblast off just fine. I buy them knowing chest is good and drawers on bottom are good but it's just the bottom 4 inches. Ok so at CB's this Sunday and offers to blast the cabinet and we start tearing it apart and start wondering WTF. The bottom 4 in of box is rough but above it fine. This is under casters look like.
612c0a3c474b55211a58cdc4b0859f56.jpg

So he sandblasts it and it turns out great.

Before

After

Before.

After

905a00bc4be63cc66778c294f8a04a88.jpg

It's all solid and came out better then myself or he thought. We still sat there and wondered what the hell happen. It wasn't left outside or rest would be rusted also and faded. I knew bottom door was open (cause paint was good on most of the door) but still not enough to rust it that bad. It almost looks like it was siting in water but still these are made when enough that regular water wouldn't do that. He said there was some chemical or something involved to cause that. That calendar was from Matco distributor out of Ogdensburg, NJ. Then the light bulb went off. This box went thru Super Storm Sandy. That's makes sense now with all the rust. It was in a basement or garage sitting in salt water for length of time. That's our theory on it. If it's true then it's cool that it survive all that happen up there and it's down it FL getting fixed up and live another chapter of its life.

LMAO, yep I'm finished. Actually the shelf above bench can fit 4 carry boxes or 4 520 machinist boxes but with DP taking up some of the shelf I can only fit 3. I fine with that cause 3 bottom rollers and 3 carry boxes makes I all look symmetrical.

Hey Gerrard, I love the "wall of Craftsman", but how in the hell did you spot that. Even if it were closer by 50 yards, I don't think I could have made it out. (Unless I'm missing something from that picture):dunno:

Thank you sir. It's been long time coming and finally did something to plan. LOL.

Well the picture is alittle deceiving in the fact that your eyes see better than the camera on a phone. So distance doesn't look as far as the camera makes it out to be. Almost like side mirror on a car. Objects are closer than they appear. LOL
