Filling in holes in my collection...

Great thing about creating Florida Chapter of the GJ is the ability to find things for others in the area wether it be at garage sales, estate sales or CL.

I came across a vise. It was a Columbian 403 1/2 with swivel jaw. Well since I know another member has a Columbian collection I knew this would be something to add to his collection so I got it. Well, he just happen to have a Prentiss 19 1/2. I've been looking for another Prentiss or Reed so we made a deal. He got the Columbian and I got the Prentiss.

I just love swivel jaw vises.

The 19 1/2 is happy now being with another family member.

With all the moving of tools around here it was time to starting cleaning and sorting stuff. I started noticing I had couple of this brand or that I had. Nothing you realize until after few years of collection stuff. Well I had a member pick this up at a estate sale for me.

Utica 12" 6" adjustable wrench and a hammer. No name on head but awesome handle. It just feels good. Now have to see if any more of the Utica family it out there. I got from 6" to 12" now.

FC meet... like said before being able to meet other members and it's been great great times. We where all gonna be close to one another so we decided this would be a good time to exchange stuff we got for each other and drool over scantly clad women at the local Hooters.

Craig and Shorty have been great guys and we have become good enablers (cough cough) mean friends. LOL. I wanted to do something special for the guys. Lately talks have been around hammers and Garlands. Theses are some Garlands.

What's nice is spilt head design means you can make any material a insert from wood, rubber, brass, lead or whatever you want. So talk has been about lead hammers and non marring hammers. Here's a good video on YouTube.

https://www.youtube.com/shared?ci=J7d8jPfsw7U

Well once he said copper a bell went off. So went over and checked my stash and had effort to make some. Here's what I ended up making.

The top T section is lead filled then the handle is solider on. I used this to melt my lead.

552c93379a2f3819efb7f0b920774d2e.jpg

I had enough to make 3 hammers but after seeing what oldfarmer did to 1/2 Cup I knew I had to play a joke on Shorty. So I made a "Shorty" hammer.

176f254ef11158d011db77f648941dae.jpg

I presented them the guys.
b611d922a720fa69f0c332fb9202aa15.jpg

Good times good times but what Shorty didn't know was I had another matching one to Craig's in my truck so both got a matching hammer. LOL[emoji13]

Looking back on the project I really think its a great idea. If damage the head you can just solider on another cap. You can use different size "T" and "caps" to make head any size you want. I see myself making more in future.

Gerard,

Cool vises!! :) Are you planning to restore them?

Thanks man. I plan to restore the 19 1/2 and redo the 19 again. The 19 just didn't come out as planned top color didn't stick to the primer. These pre war Prentiss where done in Japanning. I seen it done but I did mine in a rubbed oil bronze paint.

d7cade6ce107a0d893b0e6b60c313cce.jpg

I think I'm going to E both and get them down to bare metal. I'm not sure where I'll go from there. I might go rubbed oil bronze or naked like my Reed.

Nice to see you had a good time at Hooters. I really wish I could have joined you. The hammers are a novel idea. I might just steal it. Like I need more hammers.

I wish I'd been there. Too cool G. Or should I have said, tool cool G. Love the shorty hammer. Classic.

That's a nice little Prentiss you scored.

We should know by the end of this week when we'll be coming down. It's been hard for her to get time covered because half her coworkers have been sick for the last couple of weeks. You'll be the third one to know after I find out.

Thanks Dan! You know those guys are always pranking me so time to turn the tables. I really going to enjoy the Prentiss. The 191/2 is a newer version than my 19 but I really like the lever version better. Like I was said when you get down here is fine. No worries man.

Good looking vise brothers.

But I'm confused. How come Shorty is the taller guy? How come the tall guy got the short hammer? Did you give these out before of after multiple beers?

Well, his screen name is Shortykorte so we call him Shorty. Its the old satire of calling a tall person Shorty or big guy tiny. If you read recently oldironfarmer sent 1/2 cup a half broom so when I thought of the hammer gift idea it was only fitting I gave Shorty a Short handle hammer. LOL. I did give it to them after dinner and beers.

Well, tomorrow the company is coming to pick up the Wall of Craftsman. I thought it was only fitting to line them up for some last pics in the 5 Stitches Garage.

Hey, where is Dan? I thought he must be in transit to pick up the WOC..... :dunno:

But you say there's a company coming to pick them up. :headscrat

So is Dan getting a spot ready at his place or something? :dunno:

I can't wait. But don't expect too much for a little while. The first thing I am doing is having a SS bench top made that will be the top of the roller cabinets. Haven't thought through much more than that. Unfortunately, we are getting blasted with one storm after another for the next several days. That is going to slow things up a bit.

Hang in there guys, I promise to share pictures as soon as there's something to see.

Dan, I think your going to find long scratches on the side of the boxes, made by fingernails and possibly some tear stains:beer:

Ill say my goodbyes before the company comes. I'll then be supervising the crew packing and loading them making sure they do it right.

Very impressive photo to see all the boxes lined up like that in one spot. It shows the patience you put in by collecting them over time. I'm sure they will continue their usefulness with Dan. Your new plans will be interesting as well and fun to start a new garage storage plan.

Thanks. I'm sure Dan has great plans and look forward to seeing them. My plans (at least in this place) is to selectively downsize and continue to move forward on projects. I got more work to do on MB and new welding cart/ table project. LOL, that project just got Gerarded. Future posts coming about that. All in All I feel pretty good about where I'm at.

posting here since more of us florida guys post in this thread ( sorry Gerard :) )

anyway, i'm selling my atlas drill press model 63.i believe it dates to around 1945 or so. very nice machine, original paint, runs beautifully , has the rare table lift on it.

i'd like $250 for it, but will entertain any reasonable offers. I just don't use it enough to keep it. if anyone wants more pics, just ask.

it's pick up only of course

Well guys. Here they are. Now let's see what will happen. Don't expect as much from me as I'm no Gerard. they landed here around noon yesterday.

The tee shirt is from Craig. I guess I'm an honorary member of the Florida chapter of the GJ.

So your going to do even less painting on them than G?:lol_hitti:beer:

Dan,Yes you are a honorary member, specially since you have the Made in Florida WOC. It's the same shirt that the Hooters girl took picture with. It rode around in my truck ever since August, so it's been to a handful of estate sales. I checked it and I could still get a whif of her:lol_hitti:beer:.

Enjoy
