The 5 Stitches Garage.

On the garage front not much has changed. Since making messes and not getting much done. I have been picking up more stuff lately. Found 2 hand trucks.



I also jumped not the Bauer bandsaw bandwagon.





This was in prep for my new welding table build. I even found some material I was looking for. I also decided to go ahead and make new top for the HF 60 and the FC desk. Here kinda of a mock of of how area will be.





It’s a temporary base on file cabinet just to get off the ground and the top on the HF 60 is actually old top I built for it. I now determining whether or not to build some to match the others or to match this place they were at. If I keep them at 18 inches I can pull my truck in on this side but if I make them 24 inches I will not be able to park my truck so at the moment it’s kind of a tossup on how I will finish this off. It’s been much more usable now in the layout that it is even though it’s not completed.

I did a mock up off new welding cabinet idea from old file cabinet. The idea is to keep welder and helmets in a drawer safe from welding splatter.







The table will be 24x24 using a old craftsman saw top and bolt on wings as extensions. It’s is/ was just matter of time until I just get it built.

While everything seems to be going in right direction I had to “Gerard” myself. I finally decided on welding table and exactly what the AV cart will be. It was great idea to make this all purpose work table with places to mount my stuff to roll around garage. I saw light at the in the tunnel.... well it was the “Gerard” train heading straight at me. This is what happen. During the week I’m making a delivery and I spot this item. I got excited and went in to ask office if someone tossed ‘this out and if mind it I grabbed it. They said ofcourse. So heaved in the truck got back and heaved it again and kept it in my truck for 2 days thinking do I want this or not plus hiding it from the wife. I brought it in garage still thinking do I want to change this plan I though so hard about and today I started work on it. I guess I joined this band wagon too.



Yep it’s the special edition convertible top 5 drawer HF cart. [emoji1787]

When I found it was had no caster, bent to **** like it’s been drop off a truck and dragged down the road, top is missing, struts missing, one locking bar gone, drawer slides sound like sand in them, and did I mention bent up and beat to ****. Yep I bought it home. WTF was I thinking. Wife saw it today and she even said it’s banged up. I always wanted a 5D HF cart one but I never saw (at least in my garage) a purpose for service cart like this. I have my main mechanics (which is the HF 60) right next to me. So as much as I wanted one I never bought one. Even when I made a spot for one I never got one. I felt it better overall to put my file cabinet desk where it would be.

Well back to this mess... I started to take it apart and here’s some pics of it.















After couple of hours of cursing and WTF I was thinking I got her back in “functional” shape.

The bottom tray is so messed up thing doesn’t sit right but to can roll around and all drawers open and latch. I guess I can put this on the 5D HF cart modification page because this thing is getting heavy modified. If I bought a new one and spent the $159 I doubt I could bring myself to modify it but this one hell yeah. I got no money invest plus it can only get better from when I found it. This is going to be a fun fun project. I’m looking forward to it.

I want to say congrats on the 5D cart but not sure I should yet. That thing was really bent up but good on you for getting it working again. Only a couple hours of cursing to fix it? You're a magician then. I guess there is the bonus you mentioned that you have no regrets about modifying it now. Will this now be the welding cart?

Well Bob I cant say I’m magic because it’s still rough. When I was using the vise to straighten the bends the vise and angle was strong enough. I really need to get the heavier angle and use the Reed 105 to get things back straight. That will be for another day.

The 5D cart won’t become the welding cart but it will become a shop cart/ work table. I’m going to use the AV cart for my welding stuff until I can build the new welding cabinet. It’s just tooo involved build that going to take a chuck of time to get done at least the way I envision it. I got sink area, and the fastener cabinet file cabinet, and a list of another thing I need to get done first.

Since last February 2018 the camper has taken a lot of my spare time up. Its 95% done at moment but there’s always something to be done on it. For now I can push that aside and get back out in the garage and start working in it again.

Today I started converting the AV cart back to a welding cart. I started by bolting the saw top down. Knowing how how of pain in the *** this was on the file cabinet I drilled some pilot holes though the bosses where the bolts go.



I was just gonna stop here but I notice I section I wire wheel off and said I can’t leave like that.



After I wire wheels top I hit it with the orbital sander and some oil.





Then I said I might as well do the wings.



The wings will be removable but here’s the idea.



I can use the top alone, one wing, both wings or the as a raised slot table. This has to be one of favorites.





The idea was to make a customizable welding table based on welding project. It’s going to be a work in progress but the ideas are following now.

Working on everything but what I need to do Saturday...

I worked on the HF cart this morning. When I rolled in the garage well I should dragged it in I just threw some caster I had on it.



I used the left ones but I wanted 4 locking swivels so I tried the right ones. The bottom tray so messed up and flexible it didn’t sit or roll go. Looked over in the garage and I found the original tall cabinet dolly. I ended up making to new so I used this for the welding cart mock up and it’s fits the bottom of the HF well good enough for now.




I found that it’s a stress relief to just come out here and just take a big hammer and bang this back it shape. Might take off bottom and see what I can do with it. I still question the work doing on this. I almost want to go buy a new now but just got to remember my plans.

Other project was finally cut down a 8 ft track light track to fit over the HF60 and FC desk.



That started another project. The TV mount was in the way so needed to lower it. Well I never did like the bracket. I did cut this out of the big track of you guys remember.



So I made a small bracket out of the section of the old bracket. Couple of spacers to fit over the shelf bracket and to level it.



Now I can have tv flat against wall or on angle.





I can tweak easier now once I make top for the desk. Reason to get tv back on wall was to move the FC desk to hold the MAC box.






I really bought the MAC just to lay on top of the 44’s somewhere. Now with a vise going on each of the 44’s this box kinda too big to go where I figured. It’s been sitting a dolly on floor so it’s can sit here until I can find use and home. Now to go tackle the jungle with us other side of garage.

Use it everyday at work and haven't had to rebuild it yet( but I did add stiffeners to the top opening and redid the slide fasteners ). Keep beating on it and it will last forever!

Thanks man. It’s pretty banged up but I know I’ll get in right one day. It’s just a matter of time. The welding table is good to be great. I actually used it today as a welding table but be using it as a work table since all my benches seemed to get dirty right after I clean them. It would be so bad once I find my other one on other side of the garage. LOL

After I posted the other night I got thinking about lights on the HF 60. I haven’t had lights over here in a while so went over to my collection of lights and see what I could do. First off I couldn’t find the live end to plug in the track. I have 2 of theses somewhere.



I ended up using this style until I can find the others.



I ended up switching out all the halogen bulbs to led spots.



I started out with 4 lights and ended up with total of 8 lights. 5 shooting down on bench and 3 hitting back splash.



It’s really really bright. Picture with only the bench lights on.



After the light where up I really didn’t like the temporary layout. I just grown to really like it the other way. So I at least moved the MAC box.

After Sunday BBQ down in Tampa taking up all day Sunday and doing housekeeping duties because wife is sick in bed I got alittle time out in garage today but got out there really late in after noon. I took look at back splash and said I gonna fix this.

I want to do something behind the HF60 which is about 5’ I can’t do anything in front of electric plan ( this panel been thorn in my side since living here ) and TV is mounted on wall. I took out the 220 outlet because I don’t have a 220 welder but I want to replace it with a plug that I can run camper which is 30a and possibly back feed the panel during a hurricane. I don’t plan on running whole house but just 2 or 3 circuits to run refrigerators. During Irma I have cords running everywhere and would like to not have that again. So outlet is being moved to left of panel somewhere about here.



With outlet removed I took out the wiring and **** breaker off until I finish getting outlet and wiring done.



I then started to moved the board around and cut 2 more to fit other bay. The reason behind these boards it because when I redid this wall there only studs where you see vertical boards and needed something horizontal. I used my pocket hole jig and screwed in into the sides of the vertical boards.



It’s not much but as my friends overseas would say it’s feels good to get some things sorted out.

LOL, Ive been Gerarding myself alittle. I’ve passed on many items because I was sticking to plan. On the same token this plan has some flexibility to move this around although not a lot.

The camper has been great now that it’s just about done. It should be just maintenance from here. I am planning on a wheel and tire upgrade when these tires wear out. The propane cover is ok. I don’t have it bolted down. I just slip it over the tanks and fits tight. Mine is needs to be replaced just based on sun faded it over the past 13 years.

Why didn't you put a scrap of 2 x 6 or similar and wail on it, to flatten the free base piece? Or maybe you did, and that's the 'improved' shot?

I have cans of rustoleum-type oil-based paint in red and grey for slapping-onto stuff like that, buzz-'em w/a wire brush to remove the rust and loose stuff, and slap a coat of brushed paint onto it, to make it look better, and to prevent further deterioration. It doesn't have to look like it just rolled-off the Snappy truck.

Lighting in the garage is something I gotta have, I'm probably luckier than most, because I got a new garage layout during a whole-house re-model. It's only a 2-car attached, but I requested 4 ft 4-bulb fixtures, I have eight of those and four of the newer, 4-ft 2-bulb LED Costco luminaires. They're on three circuits. I also have the Liftmaster 2-bulb lamps on motion detectors, one at the back of the garage, where is the entry to the home, and another between the garage doors, on the opposite wall. I don't even have-to turn-on a light, if I'm entering the garage to put something into recycling, or to use the garbage can, which sitss just-outside the side exterior 36" impact door.

Your workbench looks well-lit now. Are the light wavelengths all the same? That's the kind of thing which would be a distraction to me, if they were different.

Is the file cabinet for welding a HOM unit? I see a lot of those at garage sales and in used furniture places. What do you file the welder under?

The tablesaw top looks like it should provide a good work surface for your welding. Now that you dressed the top, let the splatter begin!

LMFAO.... if you know my wife like the other so you will know I’m always getting myself in trouble. I don’t bring many things home these days. There was a point in time when she would check the truck before saying hello to me. LOL.

The cart is a work in progress just like a lot things in my garage. Limited time, budget and space keeps projects moving in a weird order. Many times in just gets things to functional point and move on to next project then going back to it at another point. The garage looks like a bomb went off right now so have space or time to screw with cart right now but did need to get it working.

The lighting consist of 6 main twin bulb fixtures in the ceiling with 2 more to be wired. I have one twin bulb over sink, 6 track lights over Wall on 44’s, and 5 over 5/8 over the HF60/desk area. The ceiling fixtures all have daylight bulbs and the tracking lighting all have have spot light led bulbs.

The file cabinet was a HON unit. The issue I had is that I wanted a cabinet 24x24x30 but I couldn’t find one to fit area I needed it to go. I had file cabinet so modified it to fit welder. I just wanted cleaner area for to keep welder and my helmets. Once I got the HF cart I reverted back to my AV cart for a welding table. I had a welding table the I gave away to a friend. It honestly was best table I made.



I’m idea is to get back to this idea and size. I might build it or improvise with the AV cart and the saw top. The saw top is definitely going to stay with the wings it’s just whatever it’s going to sit on top off.

OMG, that is so-funny! I like the tape measures to the spot lights. Now I know a use for the dozen or so HFT free tape measures I have!

I have a Lufkin cloth tape in what looks like a nearly-identical round leatherette case, it's gotta-be > 50 years-old, because it was old when I got it and as-best I can recall, that was about 45 years-ago.

I've been looking for my sliding-T-bevel, I have a wood one and a plastic one, but in my cursory search this past week, I didn't spot it/them.

Showing pi on the calculator was a nice touch. You could have gotten additional points for using a H-P 45, or some-other vintage piece.

The third tape measure is not touching the light and is introducing a tangental error that will be compounded by the fourth tape measure creating a wavelength error that can be seen by careful observation of the liquid in the mason jar shaped vessel.

Dropped in tonight to catch up. Good to see you are getting some use and enjoyment out of the camper. We enjoyed all of the ones we had when kids were little. Not sure if or when we will get back into it. Other interests at this time. It was a good move to pull your long trip with the F150. Your trailer is a lightweight, smaller unit which is probably okay behind your truck, but for hard pulling it will stress both the truck and driver. I have pulled a few rigs through some rough conditions with a tight pucker factor over the years. I once saw a guy in a campground pulling a fifth wheel behind an S-10. It 'might' have pulled it, but I don't know how the hell it handled it.

Love the welding table idea using the saw table. I have been trying to figure out one for myself and had thought about the one you had using the garage door opener rails. Now I will probably start to look for another tablesaw to canibalize.

Hey man, your absolutely right. It could have pulled it but don’t know what would have happen to my truck. It was really bad once got back down in Florida with a cross wind. I don’t have a sway control hitch yet and man it’s no fun pulling a camper and felling the wind pushing against the side for couple hours.

I’ve had a few welding tables. I found best idea is a slat table. I built one from garage door T track before. I’m can’t remember how I got idea for the saw top but it made total sense. It’s flat and side can bet used as a clamping table. It should work great for the work I’m doing.
