Unfortunately, I do not own a garage at this time... but I spend a lot of time in my old man's pole barn. I plan to get his building organized at some point, but there's a long way to go.

To start things off, here's a panorama of its current state (Lift at 95% complete and everything).

(This photo was taken with the lift bay "cleaned out")

We've been working over the past two weekends to:
1) modify the existing pre-manufactured trusses above the "lift bay" to accommodate the lift.
2) Install the Atlas OH-10X Extra Wide Extra Tall lift.

1) Modification of existing Trusses
As a senior Civil Engineering student, this was a fun project. We had a licensed P.E. come up with the design of the modified trusses, but not before I ran some numbers and came up with my own design.

We ended up sistering 2x10's to the (2) existing trusses that we needed clearance for. That included (2) 2x10's on each top chord of each truss and (2) 2x10 collar ties at 13'-7" from the shop floor. Also included was joist hangers at the ledger board and 2x8 blocking at the ridge.

(Note, these pictures do not show the completed product that includes joist hangers and re-routed MC cable)

2) Installation of Lift
I don't have any progress pictures of this, but it went relatively problem-free throughout the install. We still have to finish the terminations for (2) 110v receptacles on the posts of the lift and terminations for the 220v motor along with some hydraulic fluid.

I'm hoping to get to the shop next weekend and do some organizing in the lift bay and consolidate the inordinate amount of loose "stuff" along with installing more space-efficient shelving solutions.

Anyway, I wanted to share this with you guys, let me know what you think!

I don't see any bolts through the collar ties at the rafters, I think that would be a safety item. Nails alone would not be sufficient to hold the loads these ties would likely see. Just an observation, not criticism.

Thanks for the concern.

While you are correct that the maximum reaction occurs at the connection of the collar tie to the top chord, per the IRC, the 12d nails used at the connections are sufficient to resist the calculated loading situation.
